Chronicles of Forgotten Extra Chapter 366: How the Hell Is a Kingdom Made Up of Countless Floating Islands Barbaric?
Previously on Chronicles of Forgotten Extra...
The Kingdom of Rosarco.
A relatively small and absolutely barbaric nation, constantly waging war against the beasts of the north for supremacy.
At least, that was how Aemirya had described it but as they finally arrived at the borders of the so-called barbaric kingdom, Alden realized he had been a fool for trusting the words of an overgrown lizard.
She had warned him that dragons rarely cared enough about humans to keep their records up to date but even so, somewhere in the back of his mind, he had imagined a nation of muscular people dressed in ragged furs, carrying crude wooden weapons, speaking in broken sentences while living in rough huts beside a river.
Instead, what greeted him couldn’t have been further from that image.
"Didn’t you say they were barbaric?"
He asked in complete disbelief.
She nodded.
"Yeah." She tilted her head. "Can’t you see it for yourself?"
Alden slowly looked from her, to the chain of many enormous islands floating high in the sky and then back to her.
"How the hell is a nation built on many whole damn floating islands barbaric?"
His disbelief only deepened as he noticed the people walking through the streets, most of them wore elegant scholarly robes and carried stacks of books beneath their arms as he slowly turned toward Aemirya once more.
"And how the hell do those scholars look barbaric to you?"
"Why are you asking me? Go ask the Dragon Elders who wrote those books. It’s not as if I have ever visited this place."
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Though perhaps the obsession of these humans with constant warfare, along with their comparatively inferior knowledge, was enough for dragons to consider them barbaric. Not to mention their ruler is merely an Overlord."
Alden sighed but chose not to argue.
From everything he had learned over the past few days, the world they had entered was very different from the one he remembered.
Unlike the future, where reaching the Primordial Rank had become impossible, people in this era had somehow achieved it.
There existed monsters like the Dragon Queen, Bazooka and the Demon King, beings who had stepped beyond the Overlord Rank and reached Primordial. And the gap between an Overlord and even the weakest Primordial was like the difference between the heavens and the earth.
So, having an Overlord as a ruler did place Rosarco somewhat lower in the world’s hierarchy but calling an entire kingdom barbaric because of that?
Still, one question refused to leave Alden’s mind.
He didn’t know the answer. So he simply added it to the ever-growing list of questions he intended to ask his mother the next time they met because for now, he had more immediate problems to deal with.
"So, how exactly are we supposed to enter the kingdom?"
He looked ahead.
Both he and Aemirya were still flying high above the Kingdom of Rosarco. From this height, the vast chain of floating islands appeared deceptively small.
In reality, each one was enormous.
At the center floated a colossal main island, while several smaller islands orbited around it, connected by long, transparent tubes stretching through the sky.
Every island was surrounded by towering fortress walls and even from this distance, Alden could sense faint mana barriers enveloping each one, undoubtedly meant to repel unwanted intruders.
The only visible entrance seemed to be through the outer islands where transparent tubes descended from there all the way to the ground below, likely serving as the kingdom’s official route of entry.
Looking at the engineering before him, Alden couldn’t help but curse inwardly.
He could only imagine.
"From what I have read, although these humans maintain formidable defenses, they are generally welcoming toward other humans, especially those with a free identity."
She paused before adding,
"Or... we could simply find another kingdom?"
Alden shook his head.
"Nah. This is probably the best kingdom we could have stumbled into." He pointed toward the tallest structure rising from the central island. "See that tower in the center? To me, that looks like some sort of library and a library of that size means information."
He smiled.
"Right now, information is exactly what we need. If there’s anywhere that might have clues about the human continent, it has to be a place like this"
He looked back at Aemirya.
"So... we have to enter this kingdom."
"But how?" Aemirya frowned. "We don’t have any identification and although they are welcoming, that doesn’t mean they will allow just anyone to enter."
A small smile spread across Alden’s face.
"For now... let’s land in that forest and rest a little."
She didn’t fully understand what he had in mind but she didn’t mind. Unlike most dragons, whose draconic bodies were their natural form, Aemirya was different.
Her human form was her natural form.
So, remaining in her dragon form for extended periods steadily consumed mana. Although the drain wasn’t particularly large, even then, she couldn’t maintain it continuously for more than a few days.
So, resting sounded good to her as well.
After carefully avoiding the senses of those patrolling the floating islands, she descended into the forest below.
The moment they landed, Alden jumped lightly onto the ground and expanded his Spirit Domain throughout the forest. Advancing to the Ascendant Rank had sharpened his already exceptional senses even further.
Beside him, Aemirya also returned to her human form.
"So... what’s the plan?"
She asked as Alden’s grin widened.
"If we can’t get in by ourselves then we will just get someone to give us a ride."
"A ride?"
"Yep."
He looked toward the road leading into the kingdom.
"So for now let’s wait for the perfect bait and I have a good feeling that we will find someone soon."
