Chronicles of Forgotten Extra Chapter 364: The Great WhaleCome of Lord BoomBoom.
Previously on Chronicles of Forgotten Extra...
Alden and Aemirya tumbled through raging torrents of spatial energy, both of them using mana to shield themselves from the violent storm.
Or rather...
It was mostly Aemirya doing the hard work.
Using that spell had drained nearly all of Alden’s mana.
Celestial Singularity.
At first glance, the spell seemed deceptively simple but it was something which used spatial mana to forcefully compress unstable Eclipse mana, trapping the constantly conflicting forces of light and shadow into a single point.
Alden had gained the inspiration for it while wondering how he was supposed to create a spell when his Eclipse mana refused to obey him.
The answer was surprisingly simple...
He didn’t need to control it.
He only needed to compress it.
Why bother forcing unstable mana into obedience... When it became even more destructive left completely out of control?
Of course...
Using such a spell would have been suicide had he not first devoured Aemirya’s spatial portal with his Abyssal Soul.
But that was a minor detail, something he could improve later. For now, his mind was occupied by far more pressing matters.
Why had the Dragon Queen reacted so strangely? Where exactly was this portal taking them? And perhaps the biggest problem of them all...
"So... where exactly are we headed?"
Alden asked curiously.
Coiled awkwardly in his arms by the cramped space inside the portal’s spatial storm, Aemirya frowned.
"How am I supposed to know, you perversely reckless bastard? Aren’t you the one who used that insane spell?"
"Now, now, let’s be civilized here. No need to make it personal." He shrugged. "I merely activated the portal spell you cast earlier."
His smile turned sheepish.
"So... where exactly did you set its destination?"
Instead of answering directly, she simply averted her eyes as if hiding something and muttered under her breath.
"What? Say it louder."
Alden frowned.
She finally turned toward him.
"I said... I don’t know."
Alden looked at her. She looked back, forcing an awkward smile as if it alone could somehow ease her guilt.
"So... what would you like to eat once we land?"
She tried to change the subject but Alden wasn’t about to let her get away that easily.
"So let me get this straight." He stared at her in disbelief. "You opened a portal for me... to a destination you didn’t even know?"
His eyebrow twitched.
"Were you trying to save me... or kill me?"
He exaggerated dramatically as Aemirya’s expression immediately stiffened.
"I... wasn’t skilled enough with spatial magic. I could only force the portal open somehow and set the destination as far away from the Dragon Continent as possible, hoping it would connect to either the human or demon continents."
Alden blinked.
"What if I had landed in the middle of the ocean? Or inside the nest of some terrifying monster?"
She quietly looked away again.
"I... didn’t think that far." Her voice dropped to barely above a whisper. "I only wanted to send you as far away from the Dragon Continent as possible because... I thought you would be safer that way."
After a brief pause, she added in an even quieter voice,
"And... you couldn’t possibly be that unlucky to land in the middle of the ocean... right? I trusted your luck."
Alden took a deep breath as a bitter smile spread across his face. He already had a pretty good idea where they were about to end up.
... Because Aemirya trusted his good luck. While Alden trusted that same good luck to screw him up good the moment he started relying on it.
And now...
This damned princess had gone and jinxed him. He was absolutely certain his luck was preparing something spectacular.
It took only a few more minutes for the spatial storm to finally spit them out like two thoroughly unwanted guests.
One moment, they were tumbling through a raging torrent of space and the next, they were falling through the bright blue sky with a massive sun hanging in the sky.
An endless expanse of brilliant blue stretched beneath them in every direction, reflecting the bright sunlight as though the world itself had become a mirror.
Soon enough—
Splash!
The impact struck like a wall before Alden was swallowed whole, plunging deep beneath the surface for several long moments before finally kicking his way back up.
He broke through the surface with a sharp gasp, instinctively drawing in a deep breath. Although he had long surpassed the limits of ordinary humans and could go without breathing for hours if necessary, being underwater had always made his lungs feel strangely restless ever since childhood.
It wasn’t a necessity but was more like an instinct.
Alden spat out a mouthful of saltwater and floated there in silence for a long moment, taking in the full, glorious irony of his situation and then his gaze slowly drifted toward Aemirya, who floated beside him.
"You were saying something about my luck?" He sighed dramatically. "What was it again?"
For a few moments, she remained silent and then, a small smile appeared on her face.
"At least we didn’t land in the den of some monster." She looked around at the endless ocean. "That’s... something good, isn’t it?"
Alden closed his eyes as he resisted the overwhelming urge to smack his own forehead.
No sooner had the thought left his mind, the sea trembled as a high-pitched cry echoed across the endless ocean.
The water around them rippled violently as Alden’s expression slowly stiffened. Far beneath them, hundreds of feet below the endless blue, something enormous was rising.
Shadows spread beneath them as they swallowed the sunlight long before their owners ever reached the surface.
Alden’s eyes narrowed.
Deep below, a pair of enormous sapphire-blue eyes calmly gazed back at him and then, something finally emerged.
A whale.
Or rather...
Something that merely resembled one.
Its colossal body rose from the depths with slow, unhurried majesty, each movement powerful enough to send waves rolling across the sea.
And it wasn’t alone.
More shadows rose from the blue abyss as an entire pod of leviathans drifted around them with almost lazy grace, their sheer size making the surrounding ocean feel impossibly small.
Throughout all of this, Alden slowly turned his head toward Aemirya. She was simply staring at the colossal whales with wide eyes.
"Of all places..." Aemirya’s eyes remained fixed on the colossal creatures surrounding them. "How did we end up in the migratory route of the Voidmaws?"
She could hardly believe what she was seeing.
Alden, on the other hand, didn’t care about the wonder of the sight. All he cared about was the fact that the name sounded incredibly dangerous.
He silently raised a finger and pointed at her.
"You..." His eyes narrowed. "You just had to jinx us again, you damned lizard."
As soon as he said those words, the biggest of the whales turned its gaze toward him and let out an even greater sound.
