Kang Weizhen’s brow furrowed. Before she could utter a word, she witnessed her foolish son waving enthusiastically, "Yueyue, come inside!"
A girl dressed in white drifted into the room shortly after.
With the guest already inside, Kang Weizhen had no choice but to clear her throat and begin the introductions. "Yangyang, this is Sheng Yue, your second uncle’s daughter."
Kang Weizhen had previously given Sheng Yang a brief overview of the Sheng Family members upon her arrival. Fearing that too much information would be difficult to retain, Kang Weizhen only mentioned them once, yet Sheng Yang had already committed every family member to memory.
Sheng Yang’s grandfather was the father of two sons. Her own father was the eldest, while Sheng Yue’s father was the younger brother.
Finding herself in this specific room for the first time, Sheng Yue couldn't help but scan her surroundings curiously.
Being close in age with Sheng Yuxi and given the bond between their families, she was a frequent visitor who often stayed the night.
The residence contained numerous guest rooms, and her Aunt usually granted her the freedom to pick any room she desired. However, this particular door had remained perpetually locked, leaving its interior a mystery to her until now.
Her third cousin, Sheng Yuxi, had informed her that this was the princess room prepared by their aunt before Sheng Yang was even born. Sheng Yang had resided here as an infant. Despite her being missing for so many years, her Aunt had kept the room reserved, maintaining its cleanliness and order. As the years passed, the clothing and stationery were updated periodically, all sourced from elite brands.
She had initially assumed Sheng Yuxi was being hyperbolic. After all, Sheng Yang’s survival was uncertain for a long time. Now, however, the truth was evident. The decor, jewelry, and wardrobe were far superior to anything she owned herself.
Sheng Yue shifted her attention toward Sheng Yang and was instantly stunned.
She had imagined that a girl raised in the countryside would have sallow skin and brittle hair. To her amazement, Sheng Yang was tall, lithe, and possessed skin as delicate as a fairy's. Her resemblance to her Aunt was clear, though she surpassed even her mother—who was renowned for her beauty—in looks.
Lost for words, Sheng Yue stared in shock for a long moment.
Once she regained her composure, her eyes flickered. "Auntie, Third Brother, is this Yangyang? She is incredibly beautiful, like a younger version of you, Auntie."
She stood before Sheng Yang, inspecting her from head to toe with a look of deep interest.
While her stare wasn't overtly hostile, being scrutinized so intensely upon a first meeting would make anyone feel uneasy.
Watching Sheng Yang with a sensitive and concerned eye, Kang Weizhen noted that her daughter’s gaze remained tranquil and clear, showing no signs of irritation.
Attributing Sheng Yue’s behavior to a young girl’s natural fascination with beauty, Kang Weizhen still gently pulled Sheng Yang back a bit. She felt a surge of maternal pride; her Yangyang truly was the most stunning girl she had ever encountered.
Sheng Yue lowered her gaze. Noticing her aunt’s protective gesture, her lips curled slightly in a hidden smirk, yet she maintained a warm tone. "Auntie, Third Brother invited me over to play. I was resting in the guest room and didn't realize Yangyang was returning today; please excuse my intrusion."
Kang Weizhen nodded. It suddenly struck her that perhaps the distance between her and her daughter was simply a result of the generation gap. Maybe Sheng Yang would feel more comfortable interacting with someone her own age. Peers, after all, shared common interests.
Looking at Sheng Yang, Kang Weizhen suggested tentatively, "Yangyang, why don't you girls talk? I’ll go prepare some cookies and scented tea for you."
Sheng Yang merely offered a brief grunt in acknowledgment, her expression devoid of emotion.
She possessed a breathtaking appearance, yet her personality was the polar opposite—as still and cold as winter water.
Kang Weizhen assumed this was a defense mechanism developed from the hardships of her daughter's past life, which only deepened the guilt she felt toward her.
After instructing Sheng Yuxi to look after his sister, Kang Weizhen exited the room.
With only the three teenagers remaining, Sheng Yang chose to ignore the others, sitting at her desk to leaf through a book.
An awkward silence filled the room. Sheng Yuxi, who usually considered himself quite charismatic, felt a sense of defeat before his own sister. She seemed so detached and difficult to approach.
His parents had raised three sons before finally having this daughter. Following her birth, she was cherished as the absolute center of their world.
But... she had vanished when he was only two, a tragedy that left his mother bedridden with illness for nearly a year.
Because he was so young when it happened, he possessed no actual memories of this sister.
Breaking the silence, Sheng Yue clasped her hands behind her back and moved closer, asking with feigned familiarity: "Yangyang, what are you reading?"
