Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife Chapter 1620 - 1621: Satisfaction
Previously on Back To The 80s: President's Doted Wife...
Cheng Su moved through the store like a lively butterfly, her selections extending beyond her own mother and mother-in-law to encompass her father and father-in-law as well. When faced with comments about her inability to afford the items, she simply dismissed the prices, deriving a peculiar delight from the forced smiles of the salespeople.
This novel experience of ‘bullying’ others, made possible by her newfound wealth, instilled in her a profound sense of confidence.
The elders, however, felt they had accumulated enough. Mother Cheng, observing the situation, saw her initial anger fade, replaced by a pang of concern for her daughter’s spending. She gently tugged at Cheng Su’s sleeve, whispering, "That’s sufficient, dear. Did you bring enough money today? Showing off too much might lead to embarrassment. I’ve seen the prices of these garments; they’re quite costly."
"You’ve purchased so much already. Without several thousand, we might struggle to leave. If we lack the funds, we’ll be ridiculed for pretending to be affluent."
Cheng Su, in truth, had not brought sufficient cash. Yet, this was not an issue as she possessed a bank card. While bank cards were not as ubiquitous then as they would be in later times, they had been introduced a few years prior. The card she held, a ‘Quasi-credit Card,’ had been specifically obtained to simplify her travels.
Wasn’t this precisely the opportune moment for its use?
Nevertheless, Cheng Su first inquired with the salespeople, "If cash proves insufficient, may I pay with a card?"
They appeared momentarily taken aback, then nodded eagerly, like chicks pecking at feed: "Yes, you may."
Witnessing their expressions shift from regret to eager anticipation, and noting the salespeople who now dared to approach, Cheng Su finally felt a sense of satisfaction and decided to cease her shopping.
"Select the appropriate sizes and prepare the final bill," Cheng Su instructed with a slight wave of her hand.
Just as she prepared to depart, a voice suddenly called out, "Is that you, Little Su?"
Cheng Su turned, her eyes meeting Cheng Yaozong as he entered, accompanied by several men in suits who resembled managers.
Upon seeing Cheng Yaozong, the salespeople were visibly startled and quickly bowed.
"Second Brother, what brings you here? Didn’t the old man mention you were attending to matters in the Capital?" Cheng Su inquired, genuinely surprised by his presence.
The utterance of 'Second Brother' caused the salespersons, who had previously held a disdainful air, to turn pale and stare in bewilderment at Cheng Su and her accompanying family.
How could this be? They had never been informed of the boss having such impoverished relatives. Then again, they weren’t poor, not with the quantity of clothing they had selected?
"I returned last night, arriving in the early morning hours. I came to tour the store today. I heard from Yaozu that you were here; weren’t you planning to visit the park?" Cheng Yaozong asked, his gaze also sweeping over Father Cheng and the other elders.
Cheng Su introduced her family to him, while Mother Cheng and the others observed the imposing man before them with evident curiosity.
"Guangcheng is considerably warmer than Qing City, so I brought them to acquire some new clothing and happened upon you here," Cheng Su explained with a smile.
"Indeed, the South is warmer than the North," Cheng Yaozong concurred, nodding. "Have you found anything to your liking?"
As his gaze drifted, he noticed the garments the salespeople were retaining and stated, "Allow me to settle the bill." With a subtle inclination of his head, his assistant stepped forward to engage with the salespeople.
"Second Brother, please don’t. This is for my parents and in-laws; I cannot permit the bill to go through you." Cheng Su intervened, glancing once more, somewhat jestingly, at the still-bowing salesperson. She added, "Although my wealth may not rival yours, little sister can still afford to purchase clothing for her family."
Having navigated the intricate world of business for many years, Cheng Yaozong was a man of considerable experience. Merely by observing Cheng Su’s expression and her pointedly sarcastic remark, he understood that a narrative lay beneath the surface. A brief assessment of the elders' attire and the salespeople's anxious demeanor allowed him to grasp a portion of the situation, causing his gaze to deepen with understanding.
