Figures of authority like Cheng Yaozong naturally possess a far more commanding presence than Cheng Su. A mere sidelong glance from him sent the salespeople into a state of utter dread, wishing they could disappear, their fear so profound they dared not even inhale.
"If that is your wish, then so be it. It also demonstrates your filial piety." Seeing her unwavering resolve, Cheng Yaozong ceased his protests. His attention then turned to the child cradled in Father Qi's arms. "Is this little one Xiao Qi?"
"Yes, address him as Second Uncle," Mother Cheng responded swiftly, taking the child into her embrace and stepping forward.
Cheng Yaozong received Xiao Qi from her, and a noticeable softening occurred in his expression the moment his eyes met the child's dark, lustrous gaze. Lifting the boy, he chuckled, "He's quite a hefty little fellow." Addressing Cheng Su next, he added, "Choose a gift for Xiao Qi here in the shop. It will be on my tab, a first-meeting present from his uncle to his nephew."
"Thank you so much," Cheng Su replied with a light chuckle.
Cheng Yaozong acknowledged with a hum, "When you have the time, come visit my home or my office. I have a couple of matters I'd like your opinion on."
Cheng Su paused briefly before agreeing cheerfully, "Certainly!"
Returning the child to her, Cheng Yaozong stated, "You all continue your browsing. I still have some business to attend to." He then instructed his assistant, "Whatever Miss Cheng selects, put it on my account."
As they departed, the salespeople swarmed around respectfully, their smiles widening. "Miss Cheng, what do you have in mind?"
Cheng Su let out a sigh, remarking inwardly on how these individuals lived by judging appearances.
"Prepare the order; I'll handle the payment with my card," Cheng Su stated coolly.
"Understood!"
Once outside the mall, Mother Cheng inquired of Cheng Su, "Was that indeed the Cheng family's second son? He carries himself with such dignity!"
"Yes, it was," Cheng Su confirmed.
"Why didn't you say anything about those salespeople behaving improperly? If they were family, it might be one thing, but if it were strangers, who knows what kind of trouble they might have stirred up!" Mother Cheng scoffed.
Cheng Su offered a smile. "Mom, you witnessed it yourself. Who were the people surrounding Second Brother Cheng? They weren't managers, but rather salespeople – essentially, his employees. Had I openly declared their staff to be unqualified and discriminatory, what would the repercussions have been?"
"The repercussion would likely be the employee's dismissal. We would feel vindicated, regain our pride, but don't forget, this department store is under the Cheng family's name. If I had made a scene out of pique, while satisfying myself, it would also cause Second Brother Cheng to lose face. What satisfaction is there in that? We are family."
Mother Cheng appeared taken aback, and even Mother Qi, though finding it peculiar, observed Cheng Su with interest.
"To embarrass Second Brother Cheng, especially in front of so many managers and employees, how could he possibly maintain his dignity? If his employee was rude to his relatives, wouldn't that reflect poorly on him?" Cheng Su chuckled softly. "Besides, even if I remained silent, do you truly believe he is unaware? And even if he isn't, if I were to mention it later, that employee wouldn't escape repercussions!"
When causing embarrassment, one must consider the intended recipient. Cheng Yaozong is her second brother; to humiliate him would be akin to humiliating herself. What purpose would such an act serve?
Publicly reprimanding a salesperson is merely a display of poor emotional intelligence; it elevates no one and instead makes one appear petty and calculating.
As for the scorn and ridicule she had faced earlier, Cheng Su felt she had already delivered a satisfying retort to those salespeople once she removed that unsuitable label, not to mention the presence of Cheng Yaozong.
The most effective way to humiliate someone is to completely dismantle the preconceived notion they have of you.
