External methods of cooling offered little relief to Xiao Qi; his temperature saw a minor dip before quickly climbing again. Upon returning from work, Qi Taiguo, without a word, swiftly gathered his son and headed for the hospital.
Cheng Su trailed behind, her eyes red-rimmed. Qi Taiguo spoke, "A fever is common for children. Why are you weeping? Quickly wipe your tears, lest others mock you!"
"Seeing him unwell pains me deeply," Cheng Su replied, her voice catching as she sniffled.
She recalled past instances where families struggled to finance treatments for severe childhood ailments. While she had sympathized with those parents then, the feeling hadn't been as profound. Now, as a mother herself, she understood their anguish completely.
Xiao Qi was merely feverish and lethargic, yet her distress was already immense. If, by some terrible chance, he were to fall seriously ill, she feared it would break her.
Cheng Su remembered the poignant wish, hoping the child's discomfort could be transferred entirely to her own body.
Such is a mother's heart.
Arriving at the hospital, the couple learned Xiao Qi's temperature had soared to thirty-nine degrees Celsius. He was given an injection and prescribed medicine.
During the injection, Xiao Qi's wails echoed heartbreakingly, prompting Cheng Su to weep in unison with her son.
Qi Taiguo found himself caught between amusement and concern, attempting to soothe both his son and his wife.
With Xiao Qi's illness, Cheng Su took a few days off work to nurse him at home. During this period, Qiulan, residing upstairs, celebrated her wedding, an event Cheng Su could not attend, though she did send a generous red envelope.
Xiao Qi's sickness even caused concern for the family back home, with Mother Qi insisting she travel over to personally attend to her grandson.
"How could he suddenly develop a fever? It's all due to their lack of proper management. His mother still attends school and runs a business; where does she find the time to look after the child? This won't do, I must come and take care of my grandson. I am not reassured," Mother Qi grumbled.
Previously, she had viewed Cheng Su with disdain, deeming her incapable and relying on manipulation to keep her son Taiguo close. Now, however, she perceived Cheng Su as being *too* capable, juggling far too many responsibilities and consequently failing to adequately care for her grandson, which led to his current illness.
Father Qi interjected, "Cease this fuss. You can barely walk yourself; how can you care for a child? You call holding the child 'caring for him'? It's unclear who is truly assisting whom!"
"Don't all children get fevers? Xiao Qi is already three months old and this is his first fever—it's because the weather turned cold, which is entirely normal. You still dare claim she isn't caring for him properly? While we can discuss this amongst ourselves, do not voice such things outside, as it would offend the in-laws! They have been entirely devoted to assisting your daughter-in-law during her confinement and now with the child."
Father Qi was unfazed by his grandson's sickness; a child's fever is a common occurrence. Yet, Mother Qi treated it as a significant crisis.
"It's the cold weather leading to illness; what about the future?" Mother Qi voiced her discontent, "The cold returns every year; will he have a fever annually?"
"Hey! Stop cursing the child. The grandson is still young; if he isn't constantly running a fever, a mild fever is actually beneficial for his body—it helps expel viruses!" Father Qi declared. "I'm telling you, don't get overly involved. Your own leg hasn't even healed yet!"
Mother Qi's leg had been removed from its cast, but due to her age, it had not fully recuperated after only a few months. She was hesitant to put strain on it and still relied on a crutch, walking with a noticeable limp.
Despite her irritation, glancing at her own leg only fueled her anger further.
"Will my leg never fully recover, meaning I'm unable to care for children my entire life?" she lamented gloomily, feeling deeply wronged.
Father Qi rolled his eyes and shook his head, accustomed to his wife's frequent sarcastic remarks.
