Sister-in-law Song's sneaky behavior caused a dispute, leading to anger and a feeling of distrust among neighbors like Chunhua and Guiying. Cheng Su advised caution but not to hold grudges, though the shared living spaces made peaceful coexistence difficult. Meanwhile, Qi Taiguo commented on Sister-in-law Song's actions potentially hindering her husband's career, just as a commotion erupted from next door.

The following morning, upon returning from her exercise routine, Cheng Su was startled to notice a bruise near Sister-in-law Song’s eye.

Seeing Cheng Su, Sister-in-law Song quickly averted her gaze, offering a strained smile. "Sister-in-law Qi, off for your run again?"

"Yes!" Cheng Su couldn't help but point to the mark. "What happened there?"

Sister-in-law Song appeared more flustered, evading the question. "It’s nothing, I just got up in the night and happened to fall."

Cheng Su responded with an "Oh," but her eyes remained fixed, pondering if Song Cheng might have struck his wife. Regardless of any perceived grievances, resorting to violence against one’s spouse was certainly not the act of a decent person!

With a mind buzzing with unanswered questions, Cheng Su headed back home.

"Quickly, feel Xiao Qi’s forehead. Is he a little warm?" Mother Cheng urged her.

A fever? Cheng Su was taken aback and hurried over, her hand reaching out to touch her son. It wasn't just a little warm; he was definitely running a fever.

She hastily searched through the home’s first-aid kit, retrieving a thermometer. As she began to undress her son, she inquired, "When did this start? He didn't feel feverish when I left just now!"

To shed the pregnancy weight, she now committed to a daily half-hour run. She had already fed her son before departing, and at that time, he had shown no signs of illness!

"I only noticed it when I tried to give him some water just now," Mother Cheng said, sounding a bit worried. "Do you think we should take him to the hospital?"

"Let’s take his temperature first," Cheng Su suggested, placing the thermometer under her son’s armpit. As she held him, she observed his usually bright eyes were now dull, a sight that deeply pained her.

They say a child is a piece of a mother’s heart; this saying truly holds weight. Witnessing him so listless felt like needles piercing her own heart.

"Mom, could you pass me that water?" Cheng Su gestured toward the bottle.

Mother Cheng quickly handed it over. Cheng Su took the bottle, checked the water temperature, and offered the nipple to Qi Xiaoqi. However, he turned his head away, refusing to drink.

"My dearest, you must drink. Drinking more water will help you feel better," Cheng Su coaxed tenderly, her heart aching as she brought the nipple back to his mouth.

This time, he obediently took a few small sips.

"Perhaps he caught a chill?" Mother Cheng offered a possibility.

"It’s already October, and the weather is growing colder. With the seasonal shift, children’s immune systems can be quite vulnerable, so a fever isn't entirely unusual," Cheng Su reasoned, gazing at her son’s delicate face. This was, after all, his very first fever.

As they spoke, it was time to check the thermometer. Cheng Su glanced at the reading – 38 degrees – and her heart gave a significant lurch.

She understood that fevers in children were common, and she had mentally prepared for such an eventuality. Yet, seeing the actual number on the thermometer brought a fresh wave of heartache; she knew all too well how unpleasant a fever felt.

Mother Cheng saw the reading as well and exclaimed, "38 degrees! We should head to the hospital before it gets any higher!"

At that very moment, Qi Xiaoqi began to cry.

His cries triggered an uncontrollable reaction in Cheng Su, whose nose was already feeling sensitive. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she found herself crying alongside her son.

Watching the mother and son weep together, Mother Cheng paused for a brief moment before patting Cheng Su’s shoulder. "Silly girl, why are you crying? Let’s get to the hospital quickly!"

Cheng Su nodded, wiping her tears. "Mom, please go and get Guiying. See if she has any remedies to help lower the fever, let’s try to prevent it from rising further!"

Mother Cheng immediately went to fetch Guiying, who arrived shortly thereafter. After feeling Xiao Qi’s forehead, Guiying commented, "38 degrees isn't excessively high. Let’s attempt some physical cooling methods first. If it continues to climb, then we can consider the hospital."

Cheng Su, dabbing her eyes, brought her son back to the room. Together with Guiying, they used alcohol swabs to gently wipe his body, offered him warm water to drink, and navigated through the ensuing fussiness.
