Xiao Qi fell ill with a high fever, causing Cheng Su great distress. While Cheng Su stayed home to care for him, her mother-in-law, Mother Qi, arrived, criticizing Cheng Su's perceived neglect and insisting on taking over grandson-care despite her own lingering leg injury.

A bout of illness afflicted both the infant and the adults. Qi Xiaoqi's originally plump, fair cheeks had thinned noticeably, a worrying development for a mere three-month-old baby unable to consume much. This caused immense distress to those around him.

Cheng Su herself was deeply concerned, frequently waking in the night to check the baby for fever, consequently losing sleep and weight. She found herself on an unintentional diet.

Fortunately, Qi Xiaoqi's condition gradually improved on its own, finally allowing Cheng Su and the others to breathe a collective sigh of relief.

Qi Taiguo was also fraught with anxiety. Several days and nights of poor sleep left him irritable, which in turn negatively impacted the training regimen of his soldiers.

As October's weather began to cool, the young soldiers on the military district's training grounds were still engaged in shirtless, weighted runs.

"Report." A communications soldier approached, saluted Qi Taiguo, and announced, "Deputy Battalion Commander Qi, the regimental commander requires your presence in Meeting Room 1."

Qi Taiguo nodded, handed the registration book he was holding to the company commander below, and proceeded to the meeting room. He wondered what the matter could be.

Inside the meeting room, several individuals were already seated. Qi Taiguo took a seat and inquired of Gao Linbing, seated next to him, "What's the situation?"

"Not sure yet!" Gao Linbing glanced at him, shrugged, and offered a slight smile.

The new Regimental Commander Shen, a man whose uniform fit impeccably and who carried a file under his arm, entered the room. He had replaced Regimental Commander Mai, who had been promoted to commissar.

Qi Taiguo and the others rose to their feet.

"Sit," Regimental Commander Shen gestured, indicating they should be seated. He opened the folder and stated, "I've convened everyone because we have received a directive from above necessitating immediate action."

Qi Taiguo sat up a little straighter. Why would a mission of such apparent importance only involve deputy battalion commanders and company commanders?

"One of our intelligence officers has secured vital information in Japan, possessing a list of spies embedded within our country. They are currently entering through East Province from Country H, and our military is tasked with dispatching personnel to receive them. This is an official document." Regimental Commander Shen passed the folder downwards.

Qi Taiguo received it first, briefly scanning its contents, including the photograph of the intelligence officer, before passing it to Gao Linbing beside him.

Gao Linbing observed the individual in the photo, pursed his lips slightly, and then passed the folder to the next person in line.

"This intelligence officer is of immense importance to our military, carrying as he does the list of Japanese spies operating within our nation. Therefore, ensuring his safe return is paramount," Regimental Commander Shen continued. "Given its significance, the enemy nation is also actively pursuing this officer and has deployed mercenaries to hunt him. Consequently, he may be disguised upon entry, and there's a possibility of mercenaries tracking his arrival..."

Mercenaries, those who serve for payment regardless of the employer, seemed to confirm the intelligence officer truly held the list; otherwise, the opposing side wouldn't be so agitated.

Indeed, if this list were to fall into the hands of our military, the enemy spies lurking domestically would surely face a swift purge!

Regimental Commander Shen elaborated on the mission's inherent dangers, emphasizing that with the deployment of mercenaries by the adversary, the team assigned for the reception must be meticulously chosen.

"Deputy Battalion Commander Qi, you and Deputy Battalion Commander Gao are hereby assigned the responsibility of selecting the personnel for this mission. Ensure they are our finest soldiers, and prepare for deployment by morning," Regimental Commander Shen instructed Qi Taiguo.

"Yes!"

"Meeting adjourned!" Regimental Commander Shen stood and departed.

All attendees of the meeting dispersed, but Gao Linbing remained seated, looking somewhat lost in thought. Qi Taiguo nudged him, "What are you pondering? Let's go select the personnel!"

Gao Linbing sighed, reluctantly rising to his feet, and remarked, "Born to toil."

Qi Taiguo chuckled with a hint of resignation, slinging an arm around Gao Linbing's shoulder as they walked out together.
