As Chiang Qing returned to the dining table from the restroom, a warm flush graced the corners of her eyes and brows, lending her an even more captivating allure than before.
Gao Hongbo's grip on his wine glass tightened almost imperceptibly, his eyes narrowing with a sharp glint.
All eyes at the table shifted towards Old Master Wang, who followed behind the others, an understanding and envious expression dawning on their faces.
Old Master Wang himself appeared thoroughly content and self-satisfied, as if he had reclaimed a portion of his lost youth.
"Chairman," Chiang Qing murmured softly to Gao Hongbo, "I've had a bit too much to drink and wish to retire to my room to rest."
Upon receiving his nod, Chiang Qing rose, offered her farewells to the assembled company, and made her exit.
No sooner had she left the dining room than she overheard teasing voices behind her inquiring about the taste from Old Master Wang.
Chiang Qing’s fists clenched tightly at her sides.
Back in the solitude of her room, she endured a furious shower, yet no tears fell; her tears were far too precious to be shed so easily.
Still somewhat tipsy, she soon succumbed to sleep upon lying down on the bed.
Upon waking, she felt a hand patting her rear. Opening her eyes without any resistance, she merely bit her lower lip and let out a soft groan.
"Awake? Who is better, me or him, hmm?" The person behind her, sensing her subtle response, whispered suggestively in her ear.
Chiang Qing offered no reply.
Her scalp throbbed as he applied more pressure, a clear punishment for her silent defiance.
*You'll get used to it,* she thought, her gaze fixed on a corner of the dressing table, her expression devoid of life as she endured the humiliation he inflicted.
A guttural roar echoed through the room, quickly followed by an unnerving silence, punctuated only by a sneer that invaded her senses.
"Angry?" Gao Hongbo’s voice was languid as he caressed Chiang Qing’s shoulder.
Chiang Qing’s reply was laced with emotional detachment: "Chairman, as long as you are happy, that is all that matters. You wouldn't concern yourself with my feelings anyway."
Gao Hongbo let out a laugh. "You truly are angry!"
A cold curl twisted Chiang Qing’s lips.
"Old Master Wang will be a significant business associate of mine moving forward. His interest in you has been present for quite some time, and now that you two are becoming acquainted, you will simply need to adjust gradually," Gao Hongbo explained.
Chiang Qing could no longer contain herself. She sat up abruptly and questioned, "Chairman, you constantly profess your affection and regard for me, so how can you bear to share me with others? Does that not cause you discomfort? Isn't it..." She trailed off, unable to utter the vulgarity.
Gao Hongbo met her gaze with a faint smile, a smile that ignited a desperate urge within Chiang Qing to scratch his face to pieces.
Without a word, she perceived the mockery and disdain embedded within his expression.
Gao Hongbo took a drag from his cigar, retrieved a file from the bedside table, and tossed it towards her.
Chiang Qing, momentarily startled, opened the file. Inside, she found a series of photographs, each capturing faces beaming with joyous smiles, which brought an immediate stinging to her eyes.
"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded through clenched teeth, gesturing towards the pictures of Qi Taiguo and Cheng Su's lives depicted within. Why was he showing her this?
Did he believe she was not already miserable enough? Was he trying to provoke her further?
"Do you not wish to know their current circumstances? Qi Taiguo is Ning Gang's man, and with Ning Gang's ascent, Qi Taiguo's future appears promising."
"So what?"
Gao Hongbo's gaze swept over her dismissively. "If you desire them to face hardship, simply be obedient and refrain from causing trouble."
Chiang Qing lowered her eyelids, deliberately letting out a chuckle. "The Chairman is merely trying to placate me again. The Ning Family holds a position of great power now, poised for your downfall—as your career wanes—what influence do you truly possess to cause them any distress?"
Gao Hongbo's expression darkened. He pinched her cheek and stated, "Do not forget, even a shipwreck retains some of its structure."
Chiang Qing offered a seductive smile, leaning closer. "Is that so? Then allow the Chairman to tear them apart, family by family. Should you succeed, I shall submit to your will entirely, serving whomever you command."
She harbored no belief in the old man's words; if anyone was to inflict suffering upon them, she would have to be the one to do it herself.
