"Some people can produce water. We share the water equally. For food, we head out to hunt animals," another man responded to Du Beiye's question.
Upon hearing this, Mo Junjie approached and whispered, "Beiye, is there an issue with the supplies?"
Du Beiye shook her head softly and murmured, "The supplies are fine. I believe this rumor comes from the organization to control these folks."
With that, she moved to the opposite side of the space and gathered up all the supplies. Once finished, she ripped open a chocolate wrapper and bit into it.
The instant they witnessed her consuming the supplies, the crowd retreated several steps. Fleeting glee and relief surged through their thoughts, imagining this killer of their loved ones perishing in the same manner.
Shortly after devouring her chocolate, her satellite phone buzzed. Noticing the call from her sister, she answered it.
"Sister, what's the situation over there?"
"Beiye, we've located where they imprisoned the people. No cannibals lurk in this spot."
"Did you notice those bugs using humans as breeding grounds?"
"How did you figure that out?" Jiao Lizhi inquired.
"We encountered a bunch of folks infected by Matkuna eggs. They're ordinary people, and not a single egg has hatched."
After a brief pause, Jiao Lizhi replied, "I'll update Brother Yan on your find. Have you located Wen Hanyu?"
"Not yet. Thick snow blankets the whole zone, forcing us to check one by one. Still, Krayan predicts a 78% chance Wen Hanyu headed here."
"Alright, let me know once you spot him. I must hang up now. Stay safe."
"You as well."
Ending the call, Du Beiye faced her team and questioned, "Do we press on with the search or linger here awhile?"
Yuan Ruiyue glanced at his watch and suggested, "Let's grab breakfast first, then resume."
"Fine."
Following the recent incident, the team avoided chatting with the survivors. They shifted to the far side and formed a circle while seated.
Du Beiye pulled a self-heating hotpot from her space and handed them out. Jian Huan clutched the package and said, "Beiye, I don't think I can stomach this."
"How would you know without trying?" Du Beiye countered.
Jian Huan paused briefly, then unpacked it and set up the meal. Ten minutes later, her beef curry rice was prepared.
Remembering the waxy flavor of past self-heating meals, she braced herself and took a bite. She anticipated a taste like wax or rubber, yet it turned out perfectly normal.
She looked at Du Beiye and wondered, "How is this possible?"
"How is what possible?"
"This food… it tastes just right."
Yuan Ruiyue furrowed his brow and remarked, "Doesn't all instant food taste like this?"
Before Jian Huan could respond further, Du Beiye cut in, "Maybe your taste buds are back. Why fuss over why when you can savor delicious meals?"
Grasping her implication, Jian Huan swallowed her words and quietly ate her food.
None suspected that their ability to enjoy regular meals as mutants stemmed entirely from the Sthanam crystals.
Cleansed by Gaia, the Sthanam crystals from Jiao Lizhi were free of radiation. Their pure energy mended the bodily harm from mutation.
In time, their human functions would restore fully. They might even reclaim fertility. Currently, only Du Beiye and Jiang Ziyi knew this secret.
As the team dined, survivors watched enviously. The aroma made their mouths water uncontrollably.
A young boy tugged his brother's sleeve and murmured, "Brother, I'm starving."
"Stay strong, we can't touch that food. Uncle will bring meat when he returns," the older boy, two years his senior, comforted.
The younger boy sulked quietly, then whispered, "But they ate it and didn't get ill."
Unable to counter, the older boy fished out their final jerky strip from his pocket and offered it. "Take this for now."
The little boy accepted the jerky, hesitated, then gnawed on it. Tough and chewy, it ached his jaws each time. Yet, no better choices remained.
From the distant hall side, Du Beiye retrieved a cooked mutant chicken egg from her space. She realized these believers in the tainted supplies rumor would never consume them.
In the past, their fates wouldn't have concerned her. But after bonding with her team on this world, she discovered compassion wasn't a flaw.
Approaching the boys, she crouched down and offered, "If you're hungry, have this." Placing the egg on the little boy's arm, she assured, "No need to fear—you won't sicken or perish from it."
As she rejoined her group, the boy's eyes sparkled with joy holding the warm egg. Unfamiliar in this area, it must be safe, right?
Thinking so, he lifted it and cracked it against the floor. Shell peeled away, revealing the soft white interior. He scooped a mouthful and stuffed it in eagerly.
