Li Sikai and his team pressed on with their steps. Ten minutes passed before they arrived at a fork. Three passages stretched out before them.
At the sight, Li Sikai murmured softly, "Fu Guai, you and Pei Yixie head into the left tunnel. Feng Yun and Cheng Rui, you two enter the middle one. Jian Ziqin, stick with me on the right tunnel."
Prior to splitting up, he added, "No matter if you find intel or not, meet back at the entrance after two hours. Stay cautious."
"Got it," the team members affirmed with nods.
As they ventured through the twisting, maze-like passages, a bunch of folks climbed aboard several trucks close to the dormitories.
"Hurry up and board the trucks," an impatient guard barked.
The survivors kept their heads down, not daring to resist, and clambered on. Some gripped the frames while standing, others crammed together tightly.
Not a soul noticed how their plight mirrored livestock being hauled by a rancher.
Moments later, the engines roared to life amid clouds of black exhaust, and the trucks rolled away from the spot.
Once the vehicles departed, those confined in the dorms gazed after them. Recalling Cheng Rui's words, their expressions drained of color.
"Could what that guy mentioned really be true?" one survivor wondered aloud.
"No clue. But I refuse to get shipped out. Nobody who leaves ever returns," another replied, shaking her head.
After a heavy pause, a man fingered the dagger concealed in his garb and declared, "I'm getting out of here." He scanned his companions. "Anyone joining me?"
They shared uneasy looks for moments before a young woman spoke up. "I'll go with you."
Her words drew all eyes their way. After much wavering, the others chose to follow. Better to risk it all than linger in endless dread.
Even as they plotted their breakout, Feng Yun and Cheng Rui emerged at the tunnel's end.
Stepping out, they faced a forest of weapons pointed straight at them. A hefty squad of rifle-wielding guards glared ahead.
Cheng Rui arched a brow and quipped in the Thirteen Colonies' tongue, "What a heartfelt reception—it's got me blushing."
Feng Yun stifled a laugh at the quip amid the peril. He eyed the guards and called out, "Hey, where's your leader?"
The guards' headman squinted at their casual vibe and demanded, "Who might you be? Know you're trespassing in a no-go zone?"
Rather than reply, Cheng Rui strode forward to plant himself before the man. He stroked his chin, sizing him up thoroughly.
"One of the herders, huh?"
The abrupt query jolted the leader. Cheng Rui read the truth in his silence and turned to Feng Yun. "Ah Yun, this guy's clueless. Time to move on."
As he spoke, the guard chief lunged to seize his shoulder. Yet before contact, a gleam slashed across his vision.
Instantly, a heavy thump echoed as something hit the dirt. Glancing down, he froze at the bloody sight of what seemed his own arm.
"W-what the hell…" he stuttered, horrified.
The guards gaped in shock at their boss. They couldn't fathom the youth's feat—just a blur, and his limb was gone.
Seconds ticked by before agony crashed into the leader's brain. He gripped the stump, howling in torment.
"Argghh!"
Veins bulged across his brow and throat as his face blanched. Sweat soaked his back. He crumpled, desperately stemming the gush, but blood poured like a burst pipe.
Feng Yun's brow creased at the scene. He drew his dagger and flung it at the man.
Stab!
It sank into the forehead, granting swift mercy.
Cheng Rui whistled at the display. Feng Yun met his gaze. "Captain forbids torturing foes. Free them or finish quick."
Cheng Rui tsked and sighed. "You're no fun."
Ignoring the jab, Feng Yun reclaimed his blade, droplets trailing from its edge to the earth. He faced the guards. "Where's the herders?"
His icy stare sent shivers through them. Refusal meant certain death.
One blurted hastily, "Herders aren't here. They dwell by the mountain area."
"Which mountain?"
"The one by city center."
"Then what's this site for?" Feng Yun pressed.
The guard faltered long before admitting, "Brass hate raw stock. We bleed 'em here, turn meat into goods."
His words barely landed when Feng Yun vanished. He rematerialized behind the group. Soon, they collapsed, throats fountaining crimson.
With the ground awash in scarlet, Feng Yun stated, "Let's head out."
Cheng Rui grumbled at the command but huffed a 'tch' and trailed along.
They trekked another half hour to the vastest chamber. Dome-ceilinged, it spanned over 1,000 square meters.
To their shock, it linked to the tunnels. By arrival, the other teammates had gathered there already.
