Li Sikai stealthily slipped into the generator zone.
After inspecting the cables briefly, he severed the power source. In the blink of an eye, the whole district plunged into darkness, with all surveillance cameras going offline.
Once finished, he crawled into the air vent and headed straight for the control center.
The abrupt blackout sent the guards scrambling outside to investigate, leaving just two behind in the room. From his spot in the vent, Li Sikai snapped his fingers, sending a pair of tiny lightning strikes hurtling at them.
Right as the bolts struck, the guards got electrocuted and slumped unconscious. As their bodies dropped, Li Sikai jumped down, touching ground softly.
Drawing his dagger, he slit their throats in a single fluid stroke. Those who had forsaken their humanity deserved no mercy to keep preying on innocents.
Next, he reviewed the security footage. Then, pulling out his notebook, he sketched a basic layout and marked the spots holding the imprisoned survivors.
Task complete, he exited the control room and made his way to the first dormitory. The structure resembled those in Lin’an’s industrial districts—a towering 30-story edifice.
Just before stepping inside, a flicker caught his eye from a window. Squinting closely, he spotted a brief burst of indigo lightning.
In their squad, only Cheng Rui besides himself wielded lightning powers. He dashed forward, leaping to the sixth floor. Gripping the sill, his arm muscles bulged; with a mighty heave, he vaulted up to the tenth.
Arriving at the window, he unleashed his lightning to dissolve the iron bars and slipped inside.
Ten survivors cowered in the corner of the room, while Cheng Rui lounged in the central chair.
Sensing his foul temper, Li Sikai clapped his shoulder and inquired, "What’s wrong?"
Cheng Rui turned toward him and responded, "Brother Sikai, I think there’s no need for us to rescue them."
Li Sikai stayed silent, listening intently. After a brief hesitation, Cheng Rui went on, "They claim they want to remain here and call us the villains. Can you believe it?"
Glaring at the cluster, he declared, "You’re being fattened up as feed for mutant beasts, yet you believe your lives are cushy?"
With those words, he waved his hand; the metal bars liquefied and reshaped into multiple daggers. Another gesture sent them clattering down near the survivors with sharp echoes.
Rising to his feet, he announced, "If you choose to linger here as mutant beast chow, that’s your call." Facing Li Sikai, he added, "Brother Sikai, let’s head out."
Li Sikai eyed the group briefly before departing alongside Cheng Rui.
These folks had endured such prolonged indoctrination that a sheep-like mindset had taken hold. Unable to liberate the sheep, they resolved to eliminate the shepherds.
Coordinating via walkie-talkies, the team gathered in the parking area. Upon arrival, Pei Yixie was already there awaiting them.
Spotting their approach, she strode up and reported, "Brother Sikai, I discovered an underground cellar."
Li Sikai acknowledged with a nod; using Cheng Rui’s power, they pried open the steel entrance. No flashlights this round—they descended the ladder into the gloom.
A short adjustment to the pitch-black helped their eyes adapt. Unlike the subway station below, a suffocating weight pressed upon the team instantly upon entering the cellar.
Li Sikai unsheathed his dagger and took point. His comrades drew their own arms, scanning alertly as they trailed behind.
After a lengthy trek, a subtle noise echoed from the tunnel’s far end. Li Sikai signaled, prompting Jian Ziqin to dispatch his shadow clone for reconnaissance.
Moments later, the clone returned, and Jian Ziqin murmured, "Brother Sikai, exactly 28 mutants occupy that chamber. No ordinary people visible."
Li Sikai gave a nod and commanded, "Let’s move."
The team assented and pressed on. Mere meters from the door, Fu Guai lifted his palm, summoning slender ice needles that hovered before him.
Observing, Li Sikai snapped his fingers; miniature lightning arcs sparked from his tips, fusing seamlessly with the ice projectiles.
Cheng Rui’s gaze lit with astonishment. Rumors of the Phantom Team’s tactics had spread, with many mutants attempting to replicate them—yet success remained rare.
Simple in appearance, syncing dual abilities demanded real skill. Even blending his own metal and lightning proved challenging for him; he managed them sequentially at best.
Yet they fused theirs flawlessly. Whatever set them apart from other mutants eluded him, but he vowed to master the technique.
Unaware of Cheng Rui’s thoughts, Fu Guai focused intently and whipped his wrist, launching the ice needles at blistering speed toward the mutants.
Stab! Stab! Stab!
The instant the needles impaled their necks, Li Sikai balled his fists; lightning erupted from within, slaying the mutants in under a second.
The group advanced and confirmed the mutants’ demise. Internally charred, wisps of smoke curled from their mouths, noses, and pores.
"Hide them," Li Sikai ordered.
The team complied, hauling the scorched corpses into the shadows and stacking them. Pei Yixie then grabbed a grimy rag from the floor to drape over the pile.
As they departed, she whispered, "In your next life, learn to act human."
