Upon hearing Yin Yusheng’s question, Zhang Yuan shook his head and answered, "I don’t know. The Captain hasn’t told me anything about that mission yet."
"Isn’t the number of people sufficient?" Yuan Ruiyue inquired.
"Following the previous Matkuna assault, many high-level mutants got wounded or perished. To prevent complications on the mission, Commander Xie included extra details in its description."
"Once mercenaries learned the mission involved wiping out the Matkuna soldiers’ camp, most withdrew. Currently, only about 3,000 have signed up," Zhang Yuan sighed in response.
Momentary silence hung in the air before Qin Luzi declared, "I fear we cannot put off this mission much longer. The enemy’s circumstances and power are still unknown to us."
"We stand exposed in the open while they lurk in shadows. Should the Matkuna soldiers strike again under these conditions, I doubt we can endure much time."
"Vice Captain, if direct confrontation fails, we could infiltrate their camp and dismantle them from inside. Our present power ought to make that feasible," Cheng Rui suggested.
Zhang Yuan shook his head, stating, "Impossible. We know of over 800,000 Matkuna soldiers in that camp already. Our team alone would face certain death."
"Now that the Matkuna Race’s presence is public knowledge, why not enlist mercenaries from other bases?" Cheng Yue proposed abruptly.
"Everyone knows the Light of Dawn Organization colludes with the Matkuna Race. Its elders hail from multiple nations, wielding high status back home along with vast networks and immense influence."
"A nationwide call for recruits might alert them, prompting a camp relocation. Then we’d have to hunt them down from scratch," Li Sikai responded.
At these words, the group fell quiet, each deep in contemplation. Soon, Du Beiye spoke up, "Then let me scout the situation solo first?"
Her words drew immediate opposition from most members. "No!"
Du Beiye gazed at her comrades and clarified, "I possess more experience battling those bugs than anyone here. I’ve trained specifically against them and understand their patterns well. Infiltrating their camp poses no challenge for me."
"No, too risky," Li Qixuan refused, shaking his head.
"If you’re all concerned, I’ll take my sister along. Together, we’ll be perfectly safe," Du Beiye insisted.
The team members traded looks upon hearing this.
After prolonged quiet, Zhang Yuan concluded, "For the moment, rest up for a few days, everyone. I’ll consult the Captain on this. Until then, no unauthorized departures."
He fixed his gaze on Du Beiye and Cheng Rui while emphasizing, "Clear?"
"Understood," came the unified reply from the members.
Unable to resolve the issue, they shelved it temporarily and shifted to other subjects.
Far away across the ocean, the nation of the Thirteen Colonies on a turtle-like island plunged into crisis.
Several major bases scattered over the vast island now battled assaults from zombie cockroaches and zombie rats. Hidden among the cockroaches lurked countless Matkuna soldiers.
In one of the largest bases, a towering, muscular man silently observed the endless black tide of zombie cockroaches beyond the walls. Worry and tension swirled in his blue eyes.
"Commander, losses exceed 100,000 already. At this rate, we won’t last," reported a woman in military attire.
James Roosevelt balled his fists at his subordinate’s report and demanded, "Any word from Huaxia?"
Catrina Bell shook her head. "Signal still unreachable."
"Keep attempting contact. They may be our sole hope now."
"Understood."
Catrina Bell descended the watchtower and headed back to the comms center, brow furrowed deeply as she stood by the expert team.
Just as despair crept in, a fragmented phrase cut through the static.
Though in a foreign tongue, Catrina Bell identified it as Huaxia’s language. She tapped a technician’s shoulder. "That’s Huaxia speech."
The staffer nodded, adjusted controls, and hunted a stronger signal. Fifteen minutes on, the audio sharpened, revealing a full sentence.
One technician, a Huaxia native studying in the Thirteen Colonies, teared up at his homeland’s words, eyes brimming red.
"Charon, what’s the message?" Catrina Bell pressed.
Charon steadied himself with a breath. "Chief, it’s from Huaxia’s Lin’an City Base. They’re calling all overseas survivors to join, promising a shared home with ample food, water, clothing, and shelter."
Catrina Bell’s eyes flashed briefly at the news.
Besides the zombie cockroaches and rats besieging them, supplies ran critically low. Reaching this base could bring vital aid.
"Attempt contact with their base—see if they’ll assist us."
"Okay."
