In contrast to the Lin’an City Base, no guards were seen patrolling the walls here. Apart from a few machine guns encased in frost, the wall stood barren and empty.
Observing this, Jin Xuyan flexed his knees and vaulted over the wall with ease. At just 8 meters in height, it presented no difficulty for him whatsoever. As he touched down on the summit of the wall, a complete panorama of the base unfolded before his eyes.
Relative to the Sanchou Base from his past life, this outpost didn’t even reach 10% of its former potential.
The base lacked any semblance of organization, evident from the vast expanse of slums dwarfing the residential zones. Snow accumulated thickly along the streets, blocking easy passage.
He bounded from one rooftop to the next, surveying the base’s conditions. Despite it being midday, the place felt devoid of life. No movements stirred, and no inhabitants appeared anywhere. It seemed as though the entire base had been deserted and forsaken.
Thirty minutes passed before he reached the heart of the base, where the leaders made their homes. After brief contemplation, he extended his hand, sending a thread of black flame toward the snow-covered ground.
Pssh! Wush!
The instant the black flame contacted the snow, it dissolved into steam without delay. In the following moment, that tiny flicker of black flame erupted, forming a towering wall of fire.
Following his recent breakthrough, Jin Xuyan’s mastery over his ability had surged dramatically. Now, he possessed the finesse to shape the firewall at will. It morphed in line with the path of the road.
As the firewall dissolved the snow, it carefully steered clear of scorching nearby structures or roadside objects. Due to his flames, the ambient temperature in the vicinity skyrocketed.
Startled by the abrupt warmth, those concealed within buildings at last peered out through windows and doors to assess the commotion.
Upon spotting the immense firewall, terror gripped them as they believed the base faced an assault. Panic spread like wildfire, yet no one mustered the courage to venture outside their homes.
Jin Xuyan became aware of their presence, yet he lacked the moment to dwell on their fears. With the snow cleared away, the secrets buried underneath came to light.
To his astonishment, countless zombies had been concealing themselves beneath the snowdrifts. He couldn’t fathom how they had infiltrated the base undetected. However, had he not uncovered this on this day, he could foresee the catastrophe that would unfold once winter thawed.
In addition to the ordinary survivors, certain individuals observed his deeds from a nearby high-rise. Upon glimpsing the zombies, they displayed no surprise, behaving as if they were fully aware of the lurking threat.
"Second Brother, should we step out to welcome that individual?" one of them inquired.
The man in his late twenties shook his head, replying with a grin, "No need. He’ll approach us once he finishes his business."
"Second Brother, do you recognize him?" the young woman probed.
"Well, our encounter dates back quite a while. Though he’s no longer that young boy, he remains much the same." Pausing briefly, he continued, "With him here, our Fifth Brother must be somewhere in this city too. We might reunite with him shortly."
Hearing this revelation, the group traded looks before the young woman remarked, "Fifth Brother? You’re referring to Mo Junjie?"
Arching his brows, Mo Junzi grinned and countered, "Linghui, is there another Fifth Brother in your mind?"
Mo Linghui huffed and declared, "His father was cast out by our Grandpa, and their names were erased from the family genealogy. On those grounds alone, he doesn’t deserve to be my brother."
"Don’t you recall how deeply our Grandpa regretted that choice? The news of Fourth Uncle and Fourth Aunt becoming zombies caused him to collapse and suffer illness for days on end," Mo Junzi stated, furrowing his brow.
"Moving forward, I won’t tolerate any of you mentioning those old events. Regardless of circumstances, Junjie and Lingshen are our brother and sister," he asserted firmly.
Facing his piercing stare, the group bowed their heads and chorused, "Second Brother, we’ll remember your words."
"Excellent. I’ll notify Eldest Brother. The rest of you, return to your duties," Mo Junzi instructed, pulling out his satellite phone.
Once the room emptied, he punched in a number, and the line connected promptly.
"Junzi, it’s unusual for you to reach out. Has something occurred?"
"Brother, I’ve located him."
After a brief hush, Mo Junlong inquired, "What’s his condition?"
"I haven’t faced him directly yet, but I’ve spotted his Captain. His squad is currently in Sanchou City, and they’re bound to visit our base."
"When you encounter him, persuade him to linger. I’ll head there without delay."
"Got it."
Ending the call, Mo Junzi gazed out the window and murmured, "Fifth Brother, over a decade has flown by. I’m curious if your stubborn nature has softened in all this time."
Meanwhile, back at the Lin’an City Base, Mo Junjie let out an unexpected sneeze. Noticing it, Du Beiye turned toward him and questioned, "Caught a chill?"
Rubbing his nose, Mo Junjie denied it with a shake of his head. "Probably not a cold. Being mutants, we don’t fall ill easily, even if we tried."
Seeing he was alright, Du Beiye resumed her work. The pair had secluded themselves in the lab, laboring relentlessly. Apart from four hours of sleep, Krayan operated ceaselessly, analyzing blood samples around the clock.
To accelerate progress, they’d secured 100 printers from the base. Currently, Krayan linked to them, churning out test reports without pause.
After half an hour, the printers depleted their ink, prompting Du Beiye to comment, "Ink’s run dry once more. Why not just forward the file to Xun Che?"
