The protagonist and their party attend a mercenary briefing where they learn of an approaching Leviathan, a colossal space creature capable of destroying the station. The station's security chief reveals they lack the resources to fight it and offers a meager reward, causing most mercenaries to leave. The protagonist's group, however, decides to take on the mission to protect the station.

In the end... From the original room of Mercs, there were maybe only about a tenth of them remaining. And out of the tenth, half seemed to just be hanging around to see if there was a plan to deal with the Leviathan before they actually decide if they were going to participate in this or not.

The Chief of Security looked understandably dismayed at the number of people that remained in the room but to his credit, he did not whine or complain and simply came down from the podium to address us eye to eye.

He stood in front of us, giving each group of Mercs a look before letting out a sigh.

"I... Thank you all for staying... A part of me hoped that everyone would leave but... I won’t lie, we do not really have a plan for this."

Two of the Mercs at the far end looked at each other before shaking their heads and leaving.

The Security guy did not even look in their direction, letting the two Mercs leave without comment.

He ran his hand through his beard and let out another sigh before continuing, "I will commit all the ships on this station for this strike... But I fear that we most likely do not have anything enough to deal with a creature that big..."

Another Merc spoke up, "How many ships do you have?"

He shook his head, "Not much... Only a dozen or so... And they are B Class patrol ships..."

Another half of the group let out a sigh before they too turned and left.

Some of them were even shooting pitying glances in our direction, as though wondering why we were even staying at this point.

Once again, the security chief made no comments and kept his head down while they left.

There were only three other Mercenary teams aside from mine that were still here, and I could already tell the other three were not enthusiastic about the job at all.

That fact was shown quite clearly when one of them asked, "Are you going to pay us before or after the job is done?"

Honestly, their intent was so obvious that I was surprised the security chief guy didn’t just tell them to get lost the moment he asked that question.

Instead, he only paused for a second before answering, "After."

Those three teams immediately turned and left, since they now know they couldn’t just get some easy Credits where they claim they will help and collect the Credits but end up just running away instead of doing what they were paid for.

And then there was only us.

The chief guy looked up at us with a tired face, simply waiting for us to find a reason to leave like the rest.

Well... There were other things I was interested in knowing so I decided to ask that instead.

"Will the station be evacuated?" I asked.

He grimaced, "We will give the evacuation order if the plan fails... But I fear most people would not be able to leave this place anyway because there’s simply just too many people compared to the number of ships we can use to evacuate."

I frowned, "Aren’t there a lot of Mercenaries right now who have their ships orbiting the station? We could use theirs, can’t we?"

The security guy just stared at me like I just told him to make the station run away or something.

Amber was the one who answered my silent confusion, "Tera... Unless you’re going to offer a reward... Most Mercs aren’t going to let you do that... And you’ll also get the problem of these refugees refusing to leave the ship and maybe even fighting the Merc to try and take over the ship... It’s generally not worth it..."

Damn... That’s kind of sad I guess...

"Shouldn’t you call the station to evacuate sooner though? Isn’t this like a really big problem?" I pointed out.

He gritted his teeth, "That’s what I wanted to do... But the station’s overseer is adamant that no evacuation orders can be given before attempting to turn away the Leviathan..."

Wow... What a bitch...

"At least they’re also here, right?"

The guy’s fists clenched, "No... He has already left the station yesterday... He’s en route to the next system even as we speak."

What the fuck?! Seriously?!

"If he’s not here then you can just take charge right? Why do you still have to listen to someone who still isn’t here?!" I pointed out, feeling completely stumped.

He let out a deep sigh, "The commands to issue a station wide evacuation order is with the overseer... Someone like me is not able to do that. I could call my men to spread the news to prepare to leave but... I wouldn’t even be able to spread the news far enough to reach the entire station in just a few days... Especially when I already intend to commit all of my men to try and slow the creature down."

Hmm... Fuck it. We’re balling.

"We’ll deal with the Leviathan. You just need to make sure that the station is ready to leave should we fail," I told him.

He blinked at me, clearly not registering what I just said.

"You will... What?" He asked.

"We’ll go take down the Leviathan or turn it away. My Mercenary team can handle it."

"You... You can handle it... By yourselves? Are you... Are you really trying to joke around right now?"

I shook my head, "This is not a joke. We have experienced fighting Leviathans before. Our Exo-Knights are equipped for such a mission."

I wasn’t even telling a complete lie because we did happen to fight a Leviathan before and it was using an Exo-Knight with a Leviathan weapon to fight it.

Granted, none of us were in the pilot seat when that happened but I didn’t say we were piloting it either so... We’re not lying!

As for our Exo-Knights being equipped for this mission... I actually believe that we might stand a chance against the Leviathan with our Exo-Knights’ armaments.

And if all else fails... We have three Psionics on our side which I’m pretty sure is enough to deal with it, especially with Amber.

Since we’re the only Merc team that would be going there... We don’t need to worry about people realising that we’re Psionics and just let them think that we did everything thanks to our Exo-Knights.

The Chief of Security looked dubious at my claims but he figured that my suggestion would still work to the station’s benefit anyway so he might as well take up my offer.

If I manage to stall, redirect or even kill the Leviathan somehow, the station will be saved. If I failed... Then he had all the men he needed to organise a station evacuation and save as many people as he could.

Still... I could tell he definitely did not think I could do it as he narrowed his eyes at me.

"What is your name, girl?"

"Tera. Captain of the Teran Mercenary Company."

"Tera? Wait... You’re the same Mercs who managed to clear out two bug nests by yourselves on planet Xetarva?"

Well... Not alone since one was with a small army of dogs and the other was with my girls... But I guess yeah...

I nodded at him, "That’s right."

"If you can do that... Hmm... I see... Forgive my manners. I am Justin, Chief of Security of this station and if anyone can save this station at this point... It would be you. Can we depend on you for this?"

"We will do our best," I assured him.

"I will contact the nearby garrison and have them dispatch an assault fleet as soon as they can to aid you. If you can stall the Leviathan..."

I shook my head, interrupting him, "There’s no need. We will be able to handle it on our own. In fact, having others nearby would be a hindrance to us instead. Let us handle it on our own."

He gave me a determined look before nodding, "Miss Tera... If you are able to do what you said... I will do everything in my power to make sure you are rewarded for this. Even if it means losing my current position. Everyone on this station will owe you their lives."

Ok, calm down... I don’t need such a heavy thing on my head now...

Because honestly... The real reason why I wanted to join this fight... Aside from protecting Valiea and Ragbar’s home of course, was to have something that I could try fighting with my full strength.

I mean... Psionics were supposed to be humanity’s trump card against everything in the galaxy which included Leviathans... So I want to try fighting one as well just to see what it would feel like.

I’ve already seen Amber fighting using her flames and stuff so I really want to experience it myself as well~

Anyway... Off we go!
