What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company? Chapter 940: Preparing to Purge Xetarva

So basically... I learned that I was a freak even by Psionic standards...
Good to know I guess...
Not sure how I should feel about that though... But both Amber and Mara seemed to be quite excited by that prospect so I guess that’s a plus.
Oh, and just for the record... I ended up melting the brains of the last two pirates too, but I at least could hear their thoughts before they liquified and each one lasted longer than the last one so that’s a sign I was getting better at it.
We finished looting the pirate ship and tossed it out into space before we continued our way to our destination again.
I was expecting another pirate attack seeing we were quite literally on the outskirts of the Outer Colonies and I was not disappointed.
Another fleet of pirates had tried to intercept us though this was only comprised of several B Class ships who thought we were a defenceless research ship so we just went ahead to shoot them down without bothering to take them prisoner.
There’s no point in wasting our time and effort capturing small sized ships just for the single pirate that’s piloting them.
We did not really see any other ships in this sector since this section of the Outer Colonies wasn’t really colonised aside from a few mining stations here and there. And the ships would usually only fly around that station save for the odd cargo hauler and escort.
We ended up flying the same route as a cargo hauler heading to a mining station nearby and the captain of that ship hailed me to make some small talk as we flew.
Apparently this was something that was pretty common around these parts especially since these people were independent haulers and didn’t really have a crew they could interact with.
Kind of lonely if you asked me.
The guy I was speaking to was a rather young guy who was the eighth child of some family in the Outer Colonies and he scrounged up whatever savings he could to buy the B Class Freighter he was flying to do cargo runs and be independent of his family.
He’s been doing it for two years and was saving up to get a bigger ship and a crew so that he could move on to more profitable jobs.
I told him that we were Mercs heading to Xetarva and he shuddered saying he could not stomach fights which was why he chose to be a Freighter captain instead of a Merc.
He then wished us good luck before he altered his course towards the mining station while we headed to the next Warp Gate.
Another jump later brought us straight into an ongoing clash between a C Class Freighter and its two escorts against a band of six pirate fighters.
Amber really wasn’t kidding about these low lifes being absolutely everywhere around here...
I immediately called for battle stations and called the Freighter to let them know we were coming to help.
I chose to fly out on the Verlandi this time with Amber backing me up in her ship and we easily took down four of the pirates while the escorts took care of the other two.
The two escorts were pretty banged up but they assured me they would be fine as they were already reaching their destination within the system.
The Freighter Captain transferred over a thousand Credits as thanks for saving them which obviously wasn’t a lot of money but I’m sure it was a rather significant amount to the people living out here so I didn’t complain.
We went through the next few jumps without incident before we ended up being stopped at the next jump where a fleet of military ships swarmed us the moment we exited the jump.
I was immediately hailed by one of them and I answered the call to let a screen pop up in front of me.
"Vessel identified as The Iridescence. Captain Tera of the Teran Mercenary Company?"
I nod at him, "That’s correct. I am here to deliver cargo to planet Xetarva."
I tapped on my console to show him the delivery order which the military officer scrutinised.
I already knew what to do since Yumiko briefed me that there would be inspections like this here.
He then gave a curt nod and waved his hand at someone to the side before turning back to me.
"Everything seems to be in order. Be careful out there. You’ll need to report to the commander of the sector when you reach the system."
"Understood."
I ended the call and the military ships backed away, allowing me to fly past them to the next warp gate.
"Didn’t think they would set up this big of a check point here..." I muttered.
"That’s to stop people from trying to get to that planet and try and carry those creatures off world and somehow breed them and use them as weapons," Yumiko commented from the side.
For the former military soldier to say that... I have a feeling that something similar must have happened before somewhere else.
Incidentally, another ship had also warped in behind us and they were also treated to the same treatment as we did as the military ships closed in on them to question their purpose here.
I didn’t wait for them and simply jumped to the next system which had another military Corvette watching the warp gate.
Just like earlier, I was hailed and questioned about my purpose here so I just showed him the delivery order and I was let through.
As I neared the planet that was supposed to be my destination, I realised there was an entire military battle group stationed above it.
My sensors were reading a Carrier, two Battleships, eight Heavy Cruisers, six Light Cruisers, twelve Destroyers and a large group of accompanying logistic ships.
It was the biggest fleet I’ve seen so far gathered in a single place and my ship felt really small flying up to them.
A few Corvettes flew out and escorted me towards the battle group where I got a hail from the Carrier itself.
A middle aged man wearing a dark navy blue uniform with several decorations on his chest and a peak cap resting on his head appeared on the screen.
He took a moment to look at something else on his personal terminal before he turned to raise an eyebrow at me.
"Captain... Tera?"
I nodded at him, "That’s me. Here for the delivery of the dogs."
He nodded, "Admiral Thoryke. Commander of the Carrier UTSN Ascendant. I take it that the Biotamer is with you as well?"
"She is in her quarters."
"Good. We will be attempting a planetary landing soon. I will need you to join the second wave of assault ships that will be landing in the landing zone and coordinate with the strike team to clear out a safe zone in the staging area."
I blinked at him, "Wait... We’re joining the assault?"
He looked up at me and frowned, "Yes? Why wouldn’t you be? How else will you be delivering the cargo?"
I blinked again, "I... I thought maybe I would just offload them somewhere and that’s about it?"
"And let those killing machines on board another ship that isn’t prepared to contain those monsters? There’s better ways to send my men to die, Merc."
"I dunno... I was under the impression that I was going to just deliver them and leave... Not stay here to fight."
"You won’t be fighting. You will still be dropping them off at the designated location. Just that the location is on the planet itself in an active combat zone."
I couldn’t help but cluck my tongue at this.
They’re definitely using the vague terms on the contract to use me for more than what they paid for.
"So what? Do I just drop them in the combat zone and leave?"
"The safety of the Biotamer is paramount. That is your work here. You will only need to deliver more if we require reinforcements."
"You want us to just stay here?"
"Yes. Whether we need more of those things will depend on how well they perform here."
"... Fine, but if I believe things are too dangerous for me and my crew, we’re pulling out."
"Of course. I will have someone contact you once we are ready to proceed."
The call ended and Yumiko immediately turned back to face me with a glint in her eyes.
"Mistress... We can actually squeeze more out of this contract if you want to."
I raised an eyebrow at her, "What do you mean?"
"We were brought to the Admiral himself, the commander of this battle group. That means they are hinging this purge of the planet on the dogs that we are carrying. They must have been waiting here the entire time and can only proceed once the dogs have arrived, Mistress."
"They really believe the dogs can turn this fight around? There’s only like... A hundred of them you know? And I’m looking at an entire planet down there."
"If you let loose that number of dogs on a settlement, it’s almost guaranteed that the settlement will be wiped out unless they have countermeasures against dogs, Mistress. This is akin to deploying a tactical bombardment, just without the explosions..."
Err... I’m going to be honest, I can’t imagine that considering I had just been playing fetch and giving them belly rubs not even an hour ago...
But err... Ok I guess?
