Yu Yunwei dreams of a life with her senior brother, only to be woken by Xue Kui. Later, Yu Yunwei, Sili, and Wangxin discuss a plan to use a void-pendant to escape with Xiao Mo, but Qin Siyao arrives and reveals she knows their plan, offering her assistance. Meanwhile, Jiang Qingyi receives a troubling gift from the Nine-Tailed Kingdom: a Heart-Devouring Gu.

Looking at this gu insect, smaller than a red bean, listening to the words of this woman from the Tushan clan, Jiang Qingyi's brow furrowed tightly, her expression growing ever more displeased.

The sword-qi surrounding Jiang Qingyi grew ever fiercer as well.

It seemed that, with a single thought from Jiang Qingyi, Tushan Kankan might be reduced to countless fragments of blood and flesh in an instant.

"What exactly does your ruler mean by this?" Jiang Qingyi's words struck directly into Tushan Kankan's very soul. "What, does she think this one needs a heart-devouring gu just to keep a man?"

Tushan Kankan gently wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, her tone remaining just as calm, “This junior would certainly never think such a thing. It's simply that some methods, when used, prove far more direct, saving considerable effort."

"And this Heart-Devouring Gu is an extraordinarily rare female gu, appearing perhaps once in ten thousand years. Being of yin nature, once planted, even an Ascension realm cultivator would fail to detect it."

"Doesn't Sect Master Jiang find this method far more direct?"

The moment Tushan Kankan's final words fell, Jiang Qingyi instantly appeared before her.

"In truth, this one is rather curious. Curious how much your emperor truly knows of this one's affairs. And why she cares so deeply about this one's business, even to the point of gifting a Heart-Devouring Gu."

Jiang Qingyi's voice echoed at Tushan Kankan's ear, her slender, jade-like finger pressing against Tushan Kankan's soft chest.

As though, with the slightest additional pressure, sword-qi would shoot forth from her fingertip, piercing straight through Tushan Kankan's chest.

"If this one recalls correctly, this one merely reached a certain agreement with your emperor, to refine that Three Lives Three Worlds Pill. As for anything else, this one said nothing at all."

"And yet your emperor somehow knows that other Ascension realm cultivators exist within this very palace, specifically emphasizing that 'even an Ascension realm cultivator would fail to detect it.'"

"What exactly does Tushan Jingci want to do?"

"What our emperor wants, how could this humble servant possibly know? But our emperor surely has her own deeper reasons."

Tushan Kankan gazed directly at this most beautiful sword cultivator in all the world standing before her, her expression betraying not the slightest nervousness.

"As for whether the Sect Master uses this gu insect or not, that decision rests entirely with Sect Master Jiang alone. No one could possibly force the Sect Master's hand."

"But our emperor wished to ask the Sect Master one final question—"

"Even should he regain his memories, what then? Even if Sect Master Jiang is no longer merely his master, would he truly come to regard the Sect Master as an ordinary woman? Does Sect Master Jiang truly wish to remain, forever in his heart, nothing more than a disciple?"

"..."

"..."

Once Tushan Kankan finished speaking, silence settled once more over the courtyard yet the streaks of sword-qi lingering in the air had already torn through Tushan Kankan's robe.

Beneath the torn fabric, crimson blood welled from thin gashes across her skin yet Tushan Kankan remained perfectly still, gazing calmly at Jiang Qingyi.

After a long while, Jiang Qingyi lowered her finger. The sword-qi throughout the courtyard gradually dissipated.

"If Sect Master Jiang has no further matters, this one shall take her leave."

Tushan Kankan stepped back, bowing gracefully.

The moment the woman's voice fell silent, her figure gradually vanished from the courtyard.

Turning, Jiang Qingyi looked at the gu insect within the box, recalling Tushan Kankan's final words, her small hand clenching tightly.

…

The Zhou Kingdom's capital, the Yan residence.

A woman appeared once more before the gate of the Yan residence.

"Setting foot on the immortal path means severing worldly ties, does it?"

"If a person forgets the very road they walked to arrive here, how could they possibly know how to walk the immortal path ahead? What meaning would such a path even hold?"

Standing before the residence gate, the woman's mind recalled once more the words her master had spoken to her before.

"Fairy Yan?"

Just as Yan Shuang stood lost in thought, a carriage pulled up, and Yan Zhen stepped down, looking at the woman before his residence with considerable surprise.

"Greetings, Chancellor Yan." Yan Shuang turned, bowing.

"Hasn't Fairy Yan returned to the Four Seas?" Yan Zhen asked, surprised.

"There was nothing much to do at the Four Seas either, so I thought I'd travel through the mortal world a while, see if I might gain some insight. As I walked, I found myself here at the Zhou Kingdom." Yan Shuang explained.

"I see." Yan Zhen nodded, extending an invitation, “If Fairy Yan has no other matters to attend to, might I trouble you to come inside and share a cup of tea?"

Yan Shuang lowered her lovely head, her expression carrying a note of hesitation, but at last nodded, “Since that's the case, then I shall trouble you."

"No trouble at all. Please, Immortal, this way."

Yan Zhen smiled, leading Yan Shuang into the residence.

Within the guest hall, Yan Zhen had a maid bring out the finest tea the household had.

Only, unlike last time, when Yan Zhen had hoped to probe Yan Shuang for information about the Four Seas, this time, their conversation was mostly aimed at learning more about Yan Shuang herself.

Only, whenever a question proved difficult to answer, Yan Shuang would simply fall silent.

Yan Zhen learned little more than before.

"Why do I not see Madam Yan today?" After several rounds of tea, Yan Shuang asked, puzzled.

"Ah, my wife has caught a slight chill, and is resting in her room." Yan Zhen explained.

"Is Madam's condition all right?" Yan Shuang could not help but sit up straighter, a note of worry showing in her eyes.

"My thanks for your concern, miss, but it's nothing more than an ordinary chill. The physician has already examined her. A few days' rest should see her through." Yan Zhen said with a smile.

"That's good, then." Yan Shuang nodded and just as Yan Zhen was about to continue chatting with Yan Shuang further, the household steward walked into the hall, whispering something into Yan Zhen's ear.

"Fairy Yan, my sincere apologies, but there's a matter I must attend to. I must excuse myself for now." Yan Zhen said apologetically.

"No trouble at all. The Chancellor's official duties come first." Yan Shuang rose to her feet.

"Fairy Yan is welcome to look around the residence at your leisure. And should you not mind it, you're welcome to stay the night as well." Yan Zhen bowed. "This old subject shall take his leave now."

"My thanks to the Chancellor. Take care." Yan Shuang returned the bow, thanking him.

Once Yan Zhen had left, Yan Shuang, too, left the hall but Yan Shuang did not leave the Yan residence directly, instead wandering through this courtyard where she had once lived as a child.

As she walked, Yan Shuang's gaze drifted toward a certain direction, toward Madam Yan's own courtyard.

After a moment's hesitation, Yan Shuang walked toward Madam Yan's courtyard.

An hour later...

Yan Zhen returned to the residence, learning that Yan Shuang had already left.

He walked to the rear courtyard, wanting to check on his own wife but the moment he stepped into the courtyard, he found his wife seated there, embroidering, her complexion rosy and healthy, not looking the least bit ill.

"Wife, didn't you catch a slight chill? Are you feeling better?" Yan Zhen asked, puzzled.

"Oh? I assumed you already knew, husband."

Madam Yan blinked.

"Fairy Yan Shuang came by just now, drew a talisman, dissolved it in water, and once I drank it, my chill vanished instantly. While Fairy Yan was drawing the talisman, I noticed she wrote down my birth date and time. Didn't you tell her that, husband?"

"My birth date and time?"

Yan Zhen froze.

"I never told Fairy Yan anything of the sort."
