But mobilization hadn’t been limited to those who’d witnessed the moments leading up to the disappearance.
Because somewhere far removed from all the commotion, two military personnel who were honestly sick and tired of maintaining their respective covers and going through the same old routine were just about to receive news that would change their priorities considerably.
"Ugh!"
A muffled grunt escaped the man who’d just received another vicious kick to his abdomen, his body folding forward as far as the restraints binding him to the chair would allow.
"What’s wrong? Not so tough now, are you?!"
The burly pirate standing in front of him sneered before grabbing a fistful of his hair and forcing his head up.
"Thought you could just waltz in here and do whatever you wanted, huh?! Don’t you know everyone has to get tested before they’re sent off? And yet you dare strut around like you’re above all that?!"
Another blow connected with his jaw, sending the man’s head snapping to the side.
"Ha! Look at him!"
"Serves this bastard right! Not so pretty now, are you?!"
The laughter that followed was interrupted by a frightened gasp from the woman restrained a short distance away.
"P-Please... don’t!"
"Oh? What’s wrong, sweetheart? Scared?"
One of the pirates chuckled as he crouched in front of her, reaching out to grab her chin.
The woman immediately recoiled, pressing herself as far back against the chair as her restraints would allow. Her disheveled hair fell across her face as she shook her head frantically.
"No! Please, don’t touch me!"
"Come on, sweetheart. We’re just trying to be friendly. A little something to keep you company on the journey. Miss out on this, and you might just end up dying all frigid."
"N-No! Stay away!"
Her voice rose another pitch when his fingers came closer, and she twisted her face away so desperately that the chair scraped against the floor.
"Please! I don’t want to! Just leave me alone!"
"Tch! Still playing hard to get?"
The pirate’s expression darkened.
"Should’ve known better than to reject us when we were being nice!"
As far as they were concerned, this was simply another lesson being taught to a pair of newcomers who’d forgotten their place. They were already about to be deployed, yet these two still didn’t look nearly gaunt enough for their liking. And having people like that around certainly wasn’t good for establishing their own little kingdom.
The pirates towering over them snickered, thoroughly enjoying their pathetic little power trip, with one of them even making a show of raising his fist in a threatening gesture, purely for his own amusement.
Only...
"...!"
At almost the exact same moment, both captives suddenly flinched.
Their tormentors mistook the reaction for sheer terror, laughing even louder as they drew back their blood-stained boots.
Unbeknownst to those ugly scoundrels, an encrypted emergency comms unit—microscopically embedded right along the inner walls of Curtis and Eden’s ear canals—had just buzzed to life.
And what had startled them both was the fact that such a method had been used to contact them when going through D-29 would’ve been easier and more secure.
"...!"
But then no wonder.
Because the condensed alert detailed the unforeseen disappearance of the Imperial cadets, with members of DG specifically targeted by Outer Rim pirates, immediately followed by the issuance of subsequent Imperial orders!
However, these humans, who were clearly far worse than monsters, wanted a little more of a reaction, hoping for tears or, at the very least, screams. One of the pirates pulled back his fist before throwing another punch at the woman’s face.
"...?!"
But his blow struck nothing but air.
The woman had simply tilted her head at the last possible moment, allowing the blow to sail harmlessly past her cheek.
Having put so much of his weight behind the punch, the confused assailant nearly stumbled forward, barely managing to catch himself before falling flat on his face.
"..."
"..."
For a brief moment, the room went strangely quiet.
Then the same woman who’d been tearfully begging to be freed slowly raised her head with a huff.
But this time...
Gone was the frantic woman who’d been struggling desperately against her restraints just moments earlier.
Instead, a pair of cold eyes settled on the man standing in front of her, carrying such unmistakable displeasure that his expression stiffened before he even understood why.
"Rude."
"...?"
"Can’t you see I’m busy?"
"...!"
The pirate stared at her.
What?
What the hell was that supposed to mean?!
And why was she looking at him like that?!
"You little..."
His face flushed with embarrassment as he heard one of his companions snickering behind him.
"You think you’re funny?!"
He lunged forward again, determined to make her regret humiliating him.
Only this time, Mara—no, —didn’t even bother pretending to struggle.
The restraints binding her wrists suddenly came apart.
"?!"
Before the pirate could comprehend what had happened, she caught his incoming arm, turned sharply beneath it, and used his own momentum to drag him off balance.
Her leg swept across his ankles taking the man down hard on his back with a sickening crack.
Simultaneously, Curtis executed a similar fluid movement—snapping his bindings, rising to his full height, and instantly dropping the other two towering pirates before they could even draw their sidearms!
The entire fight was over in less than three seconds.
Silence washed over the room, broken only by the agonized groans of the three pirates writhing on the cold stone. Curtis and Eden stood tall over them, their gazes lacking an ounce of docility as they stared down at the stunned men who were still reeling from the violent role reversal.
Curtis rolled his shoulders, his eyes glowing with a lethal, suffocating aura he’d been forced to suppress as he mercilessly zeroed in on the fingers that dared touch Eden’s face.
"AAAAAAHHHHHHH!"
A delayed scream erupted as the pirate realized that the very man they’d been beating up just moments ago had somehow whipped out a spiritual tendril and severed his fingers!
"If those tongues don’t prove useful," Curtis grunted, pressing his boot harder against the self-proclaimed leader’s chest until the bones beneath it groaned, "they’re coming off next."
The pirates, who’d honestly been little more than bottom-rung members until the personnel shortage gave them a chance to rise through the ranks, had never expected to deal with something like this!
But knowing how their crew operated, someone must have heard those unusual screams by now!
Yet just as they turned to crawl toward the door, they realized that the entire room had somehow been enveloped by a spiritual barrier.
"...!"
