Princess Kira has rescued captives from an underground prison, including children, and learned that the pirates are operating an illegal manufacturing site. The pirates' leader, responsible for a security alarm, is incapacitated, and a pilot ignores a warning about the facility, heading to join a hunt for cadets instead. Meanwhile, Kira's group, concerned about the facility's potential destruction and the captives' safety, discusses evacuation plans. They also discover the pirates used a controlled spatial rift, similar to the Crown Prince's ability, to reach the planet and that reinforcements arrived the same way. The Empire faces a dilemma: block the rift, trapping their own battleships, or leave the planet vulnerable.

Now that the eldest son of House Nox had finally calmed down, he was starting to realize just how irrational he must’ve sounded earlier.

Killian could only rub a hand over his face as he sat there, silently reflecting on his actions.

To be fair, it wasn’t like he’d thrown some sort of tantrum. Even then, he’d like to believe he’d remained relatively composed while making his case. Besides, he hadn’t completely lost control the instant that prompt appeared announcing the exercise had been suspended because of those meddling terrorists.

In fact, considering everything, he and little Izzie had done remarkably well not to immediately bolt toward the dungeon space, enter through a certain redhead’s door, and head straight for Caldris Minor-7 themselves!

Instead, Killian had calmly...

Or perhaps

Finished every remaining task on his desk with the speed and obsessive tenacity of someone suddenly blessed with ten brains and twenty hands, all so he could get out of that godforsaken department and join everyone else for what was undeniably a full-blown emergency.

Naturally, his staff had been left staring at him in sheer disbelief.

Killian Nox was the exact person everyone had always assumed would remain firmly garrisoned in the capital to protect the center of the Empire, even if doing so meant being unable to rush out and reunite with his own father, the Minister, during a war!

And yet that very same man had suddenly announced that he would be gone for a while before bluntly ordering everyone to continue working as usual while waiting for further instructions.

By any chance...

Had Lord Killian been possessed?!

Admittedly, their boss acting a little strange these past few days.

Sometimes, he’d arrive with an unusual spring in his step. Other times, there would be this inexplicable, radiant glow around him that made it seem as though he’d somehow gotten plenty of rest, despite everyone in their line of work knowing just how utterly impossible such a thing should’ve been.

But today?

Today, their boss looked like it would be a catastrophically bad idea for anyone even remotely tainted with stupidity to come anywhere near him!

Thus, the staff wisely stayed far away from his line of sight, hiding behind their desks and workstations until Lord Killian himself came looking for them.

Not that anyone could’ve stopped him from leaving anyway.

Especially after he’d practically unloaded a massive stack of tablets containing already completed critical work straight into the arms of his dumbfounded subordinates!

And considering the wonderful compensation package they were currently enjoying, none of them were stupid enough to risk earning his ire by complaining.

All they could do was silently pray for whatever...

Or

Had managed to put their boss in such a terrifying mood.

As for everyone gathered for the emergency meeting inside the dungeon space, it was safe to say that several of them paused their preparations and whatever work they were doing to stare at the man who was essentially them, rather than asking, that he intended to join the reinforcements heading for Caldris Minor-7.

His father, the Empire’s Minister, looked at him as though he’d suddenly grown a second head.

"You’re going? Killian, you do realize your work is primarily centered in the Capital, right?"

"I know, Minister."

The Minister’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Oh, he knew his son well enough to recognize exactly what that meant.

This punk had come prepared to reason his way out of everything!

"Then?"

"I’ve already completed all of my assigned tasks and successfully handed them over, taking the scope of my regular duties into consideration," Killian replied with an unreadable expression, holding on to his composure with sheer determination so he could state his case properly.

"That still doesn’t give you much justification to—"

"I understand that, but..."

Killian calmly adjusted his coat.

"...!"

A tiny, trembling Queen immediately flew out and headed straight for the Minister’s face!

Little Izzie practically plastered herself there, clinging to her grandfather as though personally begging him to let them go.

"..."

It was a total low blow.

But neither Killian nor his daughter was above using whatever means necessary to secure the right to get as close to Caldris Minor-7 as possible!

The Minister closed his eyes, momentarily defeated.

Resisting his son, who was clearly desperate enough to use his own two legs to come all the way here in the middle of a workday, was one thing.

Resisting his granddaughter, who’d been the absolute apple of their eyes from the moment she’d graced them with her presence, was another matter entirely!

Of course Izzie was worried about her father.

If anything, she was probably having an even harder time than everyone else because she could feel the heightened emotions coming from both Killian and Jax.

The normally levelheaded Minister considered that as he tried to comfort Isabelle, who looked ready to burst into tears.

At the same time, seeing that Izzie had successfully created an opening, Killian immediately pressed his advantage.

"As Chief of Staff, there admittedly isn’t much reason for me to be there. However, with Deputy Officer Curtis and Tech Specialist Eden currently unavailable, there are far fewer people we can trust to head out without attracting too much attention."

He paused, briefly glancing around the room.

"Take you or the Marshal, for example. Even if Marshal Julian personally went to Caldris Minor-7, he’d inevitably be surrounded by his subordinates. As for you, Minister, it’s even less likely that you’d be able to leave your post than someone with a lower rank like me."

"And I understand that the Duke and Duchess intend to go with the soldiers of House Kyros," Killian continued smoothly. "But if that’s the case, are they supposed to split up? Who goes to investigate the Caldris Central Outpost, and who heads for Luca and the rest of DG while Uno traces the pirate crew behind this?"

Right.

Judging by the sudden twitching of several ears around him, they really have that exact problem.

Especially since the Elders had apparently taken one look at the footage of the five staff members inside the outpost and immediately declared that they needed to see the situation for themselves!

Unfortunately, that created an entirely different headache.

Who exactly were they supposed to send with the Elders who could keep everyone, including their pets, from discovering just how... their methods of analysis could be? If they sent someone without sufficient authority or backing, the Elders themselves might end up being interrogated!
