Yan Yuhan retrieves a piece of paper and a pen from nearby, scribbling, [It’s merely a flesh wound.]
“Oh…” An Zijin responded with a low hum, her hands moving with increasing gentleness. She harbored a subtle hope that a more delicate touch would somehow lessen the pain. These minor adjustments in her movements did not escape Yan Yuhan’s notice, especially as his injury necessitated her closeness for the application of medicine. A faint, youthful fragrance wafted between them. After a moment of silence, Yan Yuhan wrote again, [Aren’t you afraid I might be a bad person?] His mind recalled Tu Ming’s cautious demeanor. He wondered why this girl was so remarkably calm, her sole concern being his injury. Beyond inquiring about his identity and the pain he felt, she asked nothing else. An Zijin couldn’t help but chuckle upon seeing his question. “Are you bothered by Potato’s question? He meant no harm. It’s just that you’re new to the mountains, and seeing you covered in blood, he became extra vigilant.”
“And you?” Yan Yuhan inquired further.
“Me? I don’t believe you’re a bad person,” An Zijin replied with a soft smile. It was the first time he had experienced such unconditional trust from a stranger. Yan Yuhan’s dark eyes flickered, and an unfamiliar warmth began to bloom in his heart. [Why?] he wrote.
“Well…” An Zijin shifted back slightly as he adjusted his position. She studied him intently and echoed a sentiment from Tudou, “Because you’re handsome!” Yan Yuhan’s gaze lingered for a moment upon hearing this. He then offered a faint smile and penned, [You have excellent taste.] An Zijin had spoken casually, but seeing his written response, she burst into laughter. “Haha! You’re too humble!”
After her laughter subsided, An Zijin grew serious. “The sky was too dark then, and I couldn’t clearly see your numerous injuries. I only saw someone had collapsed. I couldn’t simply leave him to perish, could I? But when you awoke and I saw your eyes, I knew for certain you weren’t a bad person. There was no killing intent in your gaze; instead, it was remarkably peaceful and calm. Your wounds… you must have endured a great deal before collapsing. For someone who has faced so much to maintain such composure, you must be an extraordinary individual!” As a woman, her heart was inherently more attuned to subtleties, her emotions more nuanced. She had observed more than Potato had, all without drawing attention. Furthermore, had she and Potato turned a blind eye to the situation then, that life might have quietly slipped away. Their duty was to save him first, and then seek answers.
Upon hearing her words, Yan Yuhan glanced down at the somewhat amateurishly applied gauze bandage on his leg and slowly curved his thin lips. [You are very astute. I will certainly repay you for saving my life.] An Zijin looked over and pursed her lips. “You won’t even tell me your surname or name, yet you speak of repayment…”
Hearing this, Yan Yuhan turned and wrote his name on the paper. “Yan Yuhan.” An Zijin read it out, syllable by syllable, then sighed. “What a distinguished name!”
“But… the surname ‘Yan’ is quite rare… I feel like I’ve heard it somewhere before?” An Zijin frowned, falling into deep thought. It seemed few people in Rao City bore that surname, didn’t they? Yet, for some inexplicable reason, it felt familiar… Yan Yuhan offered no words of advice. He simply rose again, intending to leave the room. The confined space felt stifling. He desired to venture into the corridor and survey the surrounding scenery. Such opportunities were rare for him in the past.
