The King's Lover Chapter 548: The News

"What do you mean you think you’re pregnant?" Caius asked, sitting upright and staring at her with wide eyes.
They had been lying in bed, ready to drift off to sleep, when she had broken the news to him. His reaction was more explosive than she had expected, but the clear look of joy in his eyes was evident.
"I am a little late," Rose started to explain, and she grabbed his arm so he could lie back down with her.
"A little late?" Caius asked with a soft frown as he lay sideways, his elbow on the bed so he could keep looking at her face. "What do you mean?"
Rose chuckled. "My monthly flow." She lightly touched his face, enjoying the feel of his stubble underneath her fingers.
"And because of that, you think you’re pregnant?"
Rose nodded. "I am pretty sure that’s how it works most of the time."
His eyes widened ever so slightly. His expression bordered on concern and childish excitement.
"Do you feel ill?" he softly asked. His eyes trailed downwards and rested on her stomach.
She knew what he was referring to. They were all aware of Caira’s symptoms, and it was clear he was worried about that.
"Surprisingly, no." Her breasts did feel a little tender, but he didn’t need to know that.
"Would you like to get a physician?" His hand lifted slightly, as if to touch her, but he dropped it back down.
Rose shook her head. "I’d rather not draw any attention. I don’t have any other symptoms yet, so there is a chance I might not be pregnant."
"But you think you are?" Caius asked with a smile, his excitement exceeding his concern.
Rose nodded. She was almost certain she was pregnant—or perhaps she was hoping that she was?
A wide smile stretched his lips as far as it could go, and he kissed her. Her face had a light flush when he broke the kiss.
"That’s great news, Rose," he said, still smiling.
She nodded and rested her head on his chest. She was smiling too. He was so happy; it was hard not to feel the same.
He lay on his back, adjusting her so her back rested on his chest and she could look at the wooden ceiling of the poster bed.
"Rose," he softly called as he held her.
"Uh-hmm," she replied.
He moved his hand, placing it over her stomach. His palm felt warm through the thin nightdress, and she could almost hear his heart beating fast behind her.
"I could secretly have you checked, and if it’s true, I want to put everything in place in preparation for the baby. Let’s call a physician."
Rose sighed against his arms, enjoying being held. To think there was a high chance that a life was growing in her right now. She could scarcely believe it.
"Can we wait a little?" Rose asked as she placed her palm on his.
"I don’t know," he said and pressed his face against the top of her head. "I’d rather not, but if that’s what you want."
Rose nodded.
"Very well, whatever my wife wants."
Rose chuckled. "Thank you, Your Majesty."
"Don’t you mean, your husband?"
"Thank you, my husband." She shook her head, chuckling lightly. He was unbelievable, but it pleased her.
Rose closed her eyes and let herself drift off to sleep in his arms. In their little bubble, all was right with the world.
She slowly stirred awake and opened her eyes to Caius watching her sleep. "Your Majesty!" she yelled, a little startled.
"Good morning, my love," he said and kissed the top of her head. "How was your night?"
"It was fine," she replied and let him pull her into his arms. His chest was warm against her face, and his familiar scent was comforting.
"What about you?" she added. "Did you sleep well?"
"Better than ever."
Rose had a feeling this was a lie. If he was already awake before she even woke, she doubted he had gotten much sleep. However, he was at least still in a good mood from last night.
"Any plans for the day?" She stifled a yawn.
"Why? Do you want me to spend the day with you instead?"
"No," she spoke into his chest. "I was just curious."
"Hmm. Are you certain? I could spend the whole day with you."
"No. You can’t avoid your duties."
"One day won’t make much difference."
"Your Majesty," she called.
"If I didn’t know better, I’d say you couldn’t wait to be rid of me."
"You know that’s not true."
"I know," he replied and started to pull away from her.
She had to stop herself from stretching out her hands to him. She was already regretting chasing him away.
"Will you join us for breakfast?" he asked as he got out of bed. "I can order your breakfast to be served here."
"No," she replied and forced herself to a sitting position. "I am quite fine. I’ll eat in the dining room."
He leaned over the bed, touching her again. "Are you sure?"
"You shouldn’t worry so much. I am fine, Caius."
He grinned and lifted her chin to kiss her before he pulled away. "Very well. If you need me at any point during the day, just say the word."
Rose nodded, ignoring the tingling on her lips. She too would have to get ready for the day. She hoped Violeta wouldn’t be up to any shenanigans this morning.
However, the old Queen was the least of her worries. Despite the front she was putting up, Rose was extremely worried about the baby.
She had been attacked not long after she became Queen even without an official announcement. She had a feeling the same thing might happen if she were found to be pregnant.
She would try to hide it as best as she could. As much as she wanted to break the news to Delphine and her father too, she knew it was too soon.
She said a silent prayer as she got out of bed after Caius.
