The Invincible Full-Moon System Chapter 1988: Highest Level of Permit
Previously on The Invincible Full-Moon System...
It had been an eventful night.
Rex sat on the comfortable leather single sofa and leaned his head back to rest a bit—the moment they arrived at the main office. His heart was beating too fast earlier from all the excitement, and now, once the euphoria disappeared, he was mentally exhausted.
Following him, Davina and Lilliana sat on the sofa across.
Both of them had gone through the same thing as Rex tonight, but neither seemed exhausted.
"You have endless stamina when fighting like a bull, and you’re tired from a social event?"
"Let him be. He’s restless when he’s not raking things."
Rex groaned in return, ignoring the sisters’ mean comments. He then waved his hand to gesture for the bartender, but realized that there was nobody there. Lazily, he stood up, went behind the bar, grabbed the most fortified wine nearest to him, and brought it back with three glasses.
"Sir Rex!"
A middle-aged man with a big belly approached from the side.
He had a friendly smile on his face, looking like someone who had no bad intentions at all.
"My name is Borrat—and I am from the Borrat Heavy Industries. I won’t take too much of your time." He took out a name tag from his vest pocket and handed it to Rex. "I deal with divine equipment suited for Awakened Demigods or even Transcendent Demigods across the entire Gamma Cluster. If you have any need for gear, please contact me, and I can provide it for you with a massive discount."
"Massive discount?"
"Err—I meant free! Your first visit would be free."
"In that case, I’ll make sure to keep this. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m in the middle of something."
"Yes, of course. You can’t keep the ladies waiting."
Rex pocketed the name tag and walked back to the others.
He wasn’t surprised that one of High Lord Rashal’s business partners approached him.
Most of them saw how he didn’t bow down to the Cluster Custodian—and the Cluster Custodian didn’t even say anything to him despite his blatant lack of respect. Anyone with a brain would know that he’s not a simple man.
So, some would take their chances to get to know him.
Borrat was the first one.
Behind him, there were others who were a part of the convoy, but Rex quickly headed back to Davina and Lilliana to avoid being approached again. It was fortunate that Borrat’s business empire was tied to gears, though, as he might need it for his empire in the future.
Rex placed the glasses and wine and sat down again with an exhausted sigh.
He leaned forward, grabbed the wine bottle, and popped the lid with a flick of his thumb.
As he was about to pour a glass for himself, he looked at Davina and Lilliana.
"Want a drink?"
"No, thank you."
"I really want to stay focused tonight for some reason."
Rex could only sigh at their response and reached for the bottle, pouring himself a drink. He threw any modesty away and poured almost to a spill before stopping. Under the quiet watch of the sisters, he raised the glass at them and drained it in one long swallow.
He wanted alcohol, something strong enough to burn, but nothing behind the bar met his eyes.
Of course, there’s probably some in the cabinets, but he was too lazy.
Just grabbed the first bottle he saw and called it a day.
"Are you ready to tell us the truth or...?" Davina crossed her arms.
"Right," Rex fixed his position and leaned back on the sofa. "What do you want to know?"
"About why the Cluster Custodian was wary of you so much that he even gave Lilliana some face."
"I’d also liked to know. You must be hiding a big secret."
Rex massaged his brows, knowing that they were going to ask him that, but he decided to tell them the rough idea about the Scion of Vertex. He did not exactly tell them that he was a Scion. Just that he was a part of an incredibly strong faction that even the Cluster Custodian couldn’t offend.
Some people in the Spirit Realm knew about the Scion of Vertex.
But those people were only the priestess from the Sun Ecclesia.
Kei Xun’s people.
Rex didn’t want to risk telling them the truth and evoking some form of taboo that he couldn’t handle.
"For the record, I didn’t know that the Cluster Custodian knew about this faction of mine. I didn’t know that he could sense that I’m a part of this faction." Rex clarified, knowing that the two were acting like this because they felt blindsided. "It’s a spur-of-the-moment thing."
"Spur in the moment," Lilliana sneered, not believing what he said at all.
"Let me understand this." Davina leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with doubt. "You belong to some powerful faction that harbours entities with power rivalling Gods. And you were somehow placed there automatically. Not recruited. Not chosen. Put there. All because someone thought you have the potential to become the strongest?"
"More or less."
"And the Cluster Custodian is also a part of this faction?"
"No, Diamantona was. And Kei Xun."
Davina and Lilliana gasped when Rex brought up the Divine Saintess.
Even in the Spirit Realm, the Divine Saintess and a few others were sought after simply because of their sheer power that was so immense. To have one such entity standing behind a faction was a declaration of strength.
Slowly, the doubt in their eyes began to wane.
If the Divine Saintess was a part of this faction, then things became more believable.
Now Davina and Lilliana understood why the Divine Saintess had always stood so firmly at Rex’s side. As it turns out, they shared the same origin. Belonging to the same mysterious faction that gathered all individuals with the terrifying potential to become the absolute strongest in the universe.
"Then why did you pick a fight with that Diamantona person on the second floor?"
"How did you know?"
"You’re being quite obvious about it whenever you stare at him."
"Well, the faction has different groups within it. He belongs to another one. I was suddenly offered by a senior from my group to kill him, and in exchange, I’d be helped to grow stronger. I am in dire need of strength. So, when the offer came, I said, why not? It’s rare for me to be the one causing the problem, too, so it’s kind of refreshing to do."
Normally, Rex would be the one being attacked by his enemies.
He was forced on the defense.
Even those who aren’t necessarily his enemies attacked him first.
Since he had already sworn to carry the fight into Kaiser’s realm, he might as well channel that energy to also do pre-emptive strikes. Become the blade in the dark. Someone who attacked an unsuspecting group or person.
And Diamantona, through no fault but timing, unluckily became the first target.
Diamantona was helping High Lord Ursa, but he’s not necessarily Rex’s enemy.
He even wanted to avoid fighting.
So, in this case, Rex was the aggressor for once.
"I love it." Lilliana laughed humorously at Rex’s explanation. "A risk-taker will always be the strongest one in the end, so why not is indeed the right question. Just as long as you can really defeat him, then it is indeed a good opportunity."
"I can defeat him." Rex shrugged. "If I can’t, then I’ll find a way to do it."
Davina crossed her legs and shifted her position.
She was pleased with the answer, as that basically covered the blind spot—that had been disturbing her since earlier. But there was still one more thing that she wanted to know. "And I heard the name you shouted earlier... Edward. Who is he?"
Even though she was blind to anything about this Edward, she could tell that it was someone special.
There was profound emotion in Rex’s voice when he called out to Edward.
And she asked this question carefully.
If it’s something sensitive to Rex, then she didn’t want to force him to tell her.
Rex was silent for a moment.
He poured another glass, the same amount as before, and chugged it all down.
Despite his natural resistance to alcohol, the wine was strong enough to bypass even that.
<Notice: the user is slightly intoxicated.>
Rex ignored the notification and looked down at the dark wooden table. His gaze fixated on the details of the table—but Davina and Lilliana could tell that he was seeing more than wood. Memories flooded his mind at the thought of Edward.
"He is my friend." He stated firmly. "Someone who tried to do good but got hurt because of me."
Even as the words trailed and faded, the sadness lingered in the air.
Davina stood up without Lilliana telling her to, and sat beside Rex.
She slipped her hand between his side and elbow, her fingers lacing through his and holding tight—a silent offering of strength. She didn’t know the full story. Not at all. But she could feel the weight of it in his stillness. The mistake with Edward still lingered behind his eyes. "Soon," she said softly. "You’ll have the strength to bring him home. And winning this duel will carry you that much closer. I’m certain of it."
Rex squeezed her hand and nodded.
If he wanted to rescue Edward, then he would need to believe and keep going.
"Is that you’re drinking?" Lilliana asked.
"Hmm?" Rex followed her gaze to the wind bottle.
A smirk tugged at his lips, and he shook his head slowly. "You think I am drinking over him? Edward would never let me live that down if he knew that I need to get drunk because he crossed my mind." He swirled the last drops in the glass. "No. I’m drinking for what we’re about to do. Something best done a little drunk."
Just then, Davina remembered what he insinuated earlier.
And Lilliana could see that her expression changed at the thought, which was surprising.
"What? What are we going to do?"
"If I tell you, then you might think of me as a madman."
Moments later.
Henry walked out of the executive lift with a box in hand.
He scanned the lobby and spotted Rex in the lounge. He approached the table with wide strides and set the box down with quiet finality. "What you asked for." He stepped back. "This is only one of two parts. The other one should arrive any moment. It was held in a secured location, so forgive the delay."
"No problem," Rex waved his hand.
Considering the exhausting night, he didn’t mind resting a bit more before moving again.
In fact, he preferred it that way.
Seeing the nonchalance on Rex’s face, Henry couldn’t help but feel uneasy. "Sir Rex, you do know that this would only open the path, right? Once you’re inside another realm, you would be completely under the mercy of its ruler. This doesn’t magically let you dominate them."
"I know."
"You know? Then why is your nervousness so underwhelming?"
"Because I can handle it. Don’t mind me."
Henry remembered the incident with the Cluster Custodian,
And then he stood corrected, realizing that Rex’s background was mysterious and dominating.
"I apologize for questioning you."
"Don’t be. It’s not like we’re strangers."
Henry’s lips curled a little before he bowed and went out of the main building to wait for the other party.
On the other hand, Lilliana’s eyes settled on the box, and then on Rex.
"Even Henry is worried." She said with an evident frown. "What are we going to do exactly? And what is this box?"
"It’s a part of the highest level of Permit within the Primordial Meadow given to only the active High Lords and Members of the Parliament. One that would allow anyone in possession of it to travel anywhere they wanted."
Lilliana’s throat tightened at the realization.
But she still tried to remain composed, though it was not working.
"You mean..."
"Yes, we’re going to a realm called the Great Pale Court. We’re going to meet a Goddess."
