"You've really done it! You're not getting away today!" Thomas roared.
He breathed heavily, his eyes bloodshot, looking ready to kill at any moment.
One of his soldiers had been killed right in front of him, yet the man responsible acted like it was nothing, as if he were mocking Thomas himself.
How could he possibly let that slide?
The mysterious man might be strong, but Thomas wasn't afraid. With so many soldiers on his side, he was sure they could overwhelm him.
"G-General Thomas, p-please don't hurt him!" Melina pleaded.
Thomas only glanced at her before looking away. To him, Melina was nothing more than a tool to help him climb the ranks in the kingdom.
When he achieved his goal, he would take her to his side and use her to win the backing of the kingdom's nobles.
Meanwhile, Nolan stood calmly in the middle of the encirclement.
"Yawn..." He let out a lazy yawn as he glanced around. "Your Highness, are you sure you want to fight me? This time, I won't hold back. Once I make my move, there might not be a single survivor."
Thomas let out a cold smirk.
"Still as arrogant as ever, huh? All of you!" He raised his right hand high before bringing it down. "Kill him! Show him no mercy!"
At his command, the soldiers pulled their reins and charged straight at Nolan.
But then...
Boom!
A terrifying force erupted from Nolan's body, hurling hundreds of soldiers off their horses.
Thomas and Melina froze, staring at the scene in disbelief.
Nolan stretched his stiff body and said in a playful tone, "Since you've chosen death, I won't hold back."
With a snap of his fingers, the gravity beneath the hundreds of soldiers suddenly increased more than a dozenfold.
"Ughh!"
Everyone felt their bodies being dragged toward the ground. They tried to resist, but they couldn't. Even their horses were pinned down.
"H-How is that possible?!" Thomas pulled his horse back, his face filled with fear.
"Nothing's impossible for me," Nolan said calmly, giving him a cold look. "Don't worry. This isn't the end of your suffering. I'll make you suffer until you lose your mind."
He waved his left hand, and the next second, a magic circle appeared in the sky.
From it, a black fireball shot down and slammed into the soldiers.
"Gyaah!"
"Argh!"
"It's hot! Your Highness, help! It's hot!"
"Argh! I don't want to die!"
The soldiers' agonized screams echoed in every direction as their bodies and horses were slowly consumed by the black flames.
Thomas's face went deathly pale. His heart pounded, and cold sweat ran down his back.
"H-How... is this possible?!" he cried in despair.
The elite soldiers he had brought from the kingdom were being tortured right before his eyes. Yet, there was absolutely nothing he could do but watch.
Despair consumed him. Only now did he realize that the person he had provoked was a monster. He had chosen the wrong opponent.
Thomas's legs shook violently. He tried to turn his horse around and run, but he couldn't. It was as if an invisible force had frozen him in place.
A few minutes later, the soldiers finally stopped moving. The sharp, acrid smell of burnt flesh filled the air.
Melina quickly covered her nose, but it barely helped. The smell of burning human flesh was nothing like burning wood or anything else.
The stench seemed to go straight to her head, making her feel dizzy with just one breath.
Meanwhile, Nolan stood among the charred bodies, completely calm, without the slightest hint of disgust.
"So, what's your decision now? Your soldiers are all dead. Pretty tragic, isn't it?" Nolan asked with a teasing smile.
Thomas didn't answer. Fear had completely taken over. He knew he was finished. Offending someone like Nolan was no different from committing suicide.
But... he didn't want to give up. He wanted to live!
Thomas forced down his fear and nausea before speaking in a trembling voice.
"I-I'm sorry. I... I admit I was wrong."
He clasped his trembling hands together and pleaded with Nolan.
"P-Please spare my life. I promise! I'll give you as much treasure as you want if you let me live. Please don't kill me."
His voice was weak and full of fear, a complete contrast to the arrogance he had shown earlier.
Melina stood there in silence, watching Thomas as fear completely took over him.
Who would've thought?
Someone as arrogant as Thomas could be reduced to this. Her understanding of true power had completely changed.
If only she had power like Nolan's, no one would dare bother or force her ever again.
Nolan let out a faint smirk.
"Don't worry, I don't intend to kill you," he said casually, waving his left hand dismissively. "Now get out of my sight. I don't want to see you again."
Thomas's eyes immediately lit up. He hadn't expected Nolan to spare him. The force holding him in place vanished instantly.
Without a second thought, he turned his horse around and galloped away as fast as he could.
Watching him run away like a scared dog with its tail between its legs, Nolan couldn't help but laugh.
"Um... thank you."
Melina's soft voice came from beside him.
Nolan turned to her and nodded.
"You're welcome. By the way, aren't you afraid of me? I just killed all those soldiers without a second thought. To you, I must look like a monster, right?"
Melina was caught off guard by his question. She quickly shook her head.
"No, you're not a monster!"
Nolan raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her answer.
"Y-You saved me from that horrible situation. Thomas and his soldiers tried to force me to go with them. They even threatened to burn down this village," she said, her voice growing quieter. "So... you're not a monster!"
Her expression was completely sincere, without the slightest hint of fear.
Nolan couldn't help but smile. Before he realized it, he reached out and gently ruffled her hair.
Melina froze. Her body tensed as if an electric current had run through it.
Noticing her reaction, Nolan burst into laughter.
"Thanks for saying that. You don't need to worry."
He looked indifferently in the direction Thomas had fled.
"Neither Thomas nor the Great Kingdom of Horland will be able to trouble you again. After all, their fate will be decided today..."
