The Golem Mage Chapter 1181: The Ice Army Appearance [1].
Previously on The Golem Mage...
“Shit!” the Amazon Archer Queen cursed, although she did not have enough soldiers to compete with the Orc army directly, she had still been confident that her forces could hold the defensive line for a long time.
Several Barbarian warriors near the city gate had already fallen beneath the Orcs’ arrows. However, many others managed to avoid being pierced.
This was because the Amazon Archers stationed atop the city wall fired the hooked bolts attached to their left handguards toward them.
The Barbarian warriors then grabbed onto those hooks, allowing the Amazon Archers to pull them upward.
Although dragging men nearly twice their weight up the city wall was an incredibly strenuous task, however; the Amazon Archers strengthened themselves with Qi while the Barbarians also helped by trying to climb along the surface of the wall, making the process considerably easier for the ladies atop the city walls.
Once the first group of Barbarians reached the top, they joined the Amazon Archers in pulling on the metal cables and helping the remaining warriors ascend.
However, the Orc commander who witnessed this did not appear overly concerned about being unable to finish all of the Barbarian soldiers.
He merely ordered some of the Orc Archers to continue firing toward the gate keeping them occupied while commanding another group to lead one of the gigantic demonic alligators toward an archer tower that appeared less heavily defended, and not concentrated on properly.
This particular alligator carried an enormous siege contraption on its back.
The structure functioned like a mobile staircase, allowing soldiers to climb through its interior until they reached the upper end, which would place them directly atop the city wall, it is called a Siege Tower.
Its entire body was covered with layers of sturdy wood, making it extremely difficult for anyone outside to notice that several Orcs were already hiding within it.
While the Amazon Archer Queen remained occupied with pulling the Barbarian warriors onto the walls—knowing that her Archer unit would not survive for long without their protection, the Orc commander took full advantage of the distraction.
Before anyone could understand what was happening, the demonic beast, which had been ordered to charge at full speed, had already reached the city wall.
Even so, the sword golem whose blade had returned to Saint (in the last Chapter)had tried to hold its ground.
However, the moment the upper cover of the siege structure dropped down a draw bridge which formed a bridge lane between the machine and the city wall, the waiting Orc Berserkers at the top level just launched themselves forward.
Their movements could only be described as launching, because with a single leap, they were already landing in the range of the city wall and engaging the Golem there.
With the support of the archers positioned behind him, the sword golem managed to kill around thirty of them.
However, the Berserkers just kept coming, and then all his deflecting and redirection he kept performing with his sword was no longer enough to keep them in check, as their weapons pierced through his body again and again.
Even that would not normally have been enough to kill him, since the sword itself was the true soul and core of his body.
But after The Orcs had watched him reconstruct his body three times, burning through his mana each time to restore himself so he could continue protecting the archers, they noticed something about the body getting reconstructed and the sword.
However, after being killed for the third time, he no longer had enough mana left to reconstruct his body, and this time, one of the Orcs grabbed the sword and slammed it violently against a nearby section of the wall.
Normally, the blade was made from material close to indestructible, but after repeatedly exhausting its mana, it had already entered a weakened state, and developed cracks.
With that section of the wall now compromised, the Amazon Archer Queen was forced to divide her already limited forces into two groups.
One group continued firing at the Orcs advancing through the central section, where another portion of the orc army was attempting to break through using a second siege machine.
This one resembled a massive caterpillar-shaped weapon and is called Trebuchet.
Huge stones were loaded into its firing chamber and coated with a small amount of oil. Just seconds before the Orc commander gave the order to fire, the stones would be set ablaze.
With the way the second siege machine had been positioned, it continued striking the central section of the city wall, forcing the Amazon Archer Queen and the other units stationed there to give up more ground in order to avoid getting killed by the massive stones.
There was simply no one among them strong enough to stop stones of that size, the Amazon Archer Queen repeatedly fired bolts from her crossbow, shattering many of the boulder-like projectiles into fragments before they could get into the range of the city walls.
However, she couldn’t destroy them faster than they were sending them, the moment one boulder was destroyed, another would already be sent flying toward the wall, almost immediately.
While the Amazon Archers attempted to pick off the Orcs operating the second siege machine one by one, the Amazon Archer Queen continued issuing commands to Saint’s remaining captain-rank sword golems and the Barbarian warriors to keep the berserkers on the city walls in check.
And literally they were doing an excellent job against the endless waves of Orcs pouring onto the city wall so far.
In fact, more than five hundred Orcs had already died there.
The only problem was that no matter how many they killed, more continued appearing to replace the fallen, the final blow to Valeria’s confidence came when the latest boulder struck the already weakened central section of the wall.
Boom!
The upper section collapsed with a thunderous rumble, and the falling debris smashed through the city gate beneath it.
A massive opening was finally created in the center of the city’s defenses, this caused the Orc commander to grin wildly.
He drew the weapon strapped battle axe across his back and raised it into the air.
“Charge!”
The moment he gave the order, he kicked the side of his massive wolf mount, he and the remaining mounted platoon of the Orc army immediately charged toward the breach.
Even before entering the city, several wolf riders pulled spears from the pouches attached to their mounts and hurled them toward the defenders.
The spears pierced and injured another group of Barbarian warriors.
With the force behind the throws combined with the speed of the charging mounts, even the Barbarians who were not killed outright were knocked from the ruined city gate.
Those who fell outside were immediately met by the cold blades of the Orcs rushing through the breach, it had all happened so quickly.
With the wolf riders now joining the assault, it became clear to the Amazon Archer Queen that this was already becoming a losing battle.
At this point, all she could do was fight to the death and kill as many Orcs as possible before she fell, that was until a freezing wind suddenly swept across the battlefield all the way from the central region, followed by the faint but steady thud of an army marching in the far distance.
Valeria, the Amazon Archer Queen, could not tell where this army had come from or how it had appeared so suddenly.
However, she had never been happier to receive reinforcements than she was at that moment.
“Kill them all!” the Orc commander shouted.
The boar riders were the first to charge forward, intending to smash through the first formation of two hundred warriors, all of whom carried a shield in each hand.
The shield in their left hand was round, with a thin blade lining its outer edge.
The one attached to their right hand was shaped like a diamond. However, it was much smaller and had been designed to fit closely around the hand, only extending slightly beyond it.
Rather than a proper shield, it looked more like a pointed metal handguard.
