1294 1294: Hawkins’s Faith
Who could have imagined that the backstabber Bachard would despise him so much just because of Vincent?! Unable to produce his own heir, he had seized his brother-in-law’s son as his successor! Wouldn’t it be ideal if Vincent seized control of the Hess family?
Yet, Bachard sought his death over something so trivial!
Watching his subordinates gasp for breath while fighting desperately to stay alive, terror and dread overwhelmed Eddie’s expression.
He remained utterly baffled by the turn of events!
Even though the Hess family backed the Medical Federation, Eddie hadn’t been the one to abduct Ling Siqi or murder Mrs. Feng! Nor had he slain Saka. So why were they all targeting him now?
The Di family from Country Z, the Tang Sect, and the Little Family…
It made sense why these groups wanted him eliminated.
Hawkins had been the first to provoke both the Di family and Tang Sect, and he had even assassinated Saka! Eddie had also stolen Vincent from his rightful parents. All that logic held up!
But what about El’s subordinates and the troops their grandfather had bequeathed to Jiamo?!
As the patriarch of the Hess family, he knew precisely the strength and loyalties of every family member.
…
All the assets their grandfather had willed to Jiamo had ended up with El. Initially, Eddie had feared him because El wielded immense power that he couldn’t challenge. Moreover, El made few demands on the Hess family, allowing them to coexist peacefully for years.
After Jiamo’s demise, aside from his existing resources, El had become like a lifeless shell.
Eddie never fathomed how such a broken man could strike back at him!
Then came the two powerhouse organizations in the Delta—AO2 and the Sanctuary—both now united in their pursuit to end him.
Why on earth?!
He had indeed attempted to block AO2’s growth and expansion into a larger enterprise, and they’d clashed before, but that was just cutthroat business! Isn’t it standard for rival firms to sabotage one another’s success?!
Besides, once AO2 pioneered the world’s most cutting-edge weaponry and skyrocketed to become the planet’s wealthiest corporation, Eddie had stopped antagonizing them. He’d even attempted to curry favor.
Even with AO2 partnering with the Di family these days, Eddie couldn’t fathom them diving so deeply into this feud that they’d join the hunt for his life!
The Sanctuary baffled him even more!
He had maintained a tight alliance with Z from the Sanctuary. Whenever the Hess family plotted something nefarious, they routinely sought the Sanctuary’s aid.
Given their close ties, why would the Sanctuary’s forces turn against him to take his life?
…
Faced with so many powerful factions gunning for him, even as the Hess family leader, victory seemed impossible. Worse, all his own forces had been silently eradicated without his knowledge, sealing his doom.
“Mr. Eddie, you’re up against insurmountable charges. The governor personally apprehended you, and escaping prison would brand you a fugitive. If I were in your shoes, I’d remain right here without wandering off. Countless nations are entangled in the gene lab scandal, piling thousands of offenses on your head. Fleeing would mean instant destruction—no one, not even the governor, could shield you then.”
Hearing this nobody lecture him so boldly, fury surged through Eddie.
He desperately wished this nightmare would end.
Could someone please explain the truth? Why were all these colossal powers bent on his demise?!
Hawkins felt even more despair than Eddie.
His guilt had been confirmed, and his transfer to prison loomed imminent.
In contrast to facilities in developing nations, prisons in the Centrals resembled luxury resorts.
Every inmate enjoyed a private suite equipped with TV, gaming consoles, and a personal kitchen for self-cooked meals—the pinnacle of incarceration.
Yet, such luxuries could never appease the Director of the Medical Federation!
Considering Di Jinqian’s role in his downfall, venomous hatred poisoned Hawkins’s soul.
…
“Why hasn’t a single family member come to rescue me? And that wretched Di Jinqian with her spouse Zhan Lichuan—have they dropped dead yet?!”
“Hmm? You’re wishing for my demise?”
Hawkins occupied the grandest suite in the facility, yet it failed to satisfy him. He promptly reserved the entire structure, barring entry to all except his loyalists.
His followers, to ensure his comfort, had racked up sufficient felonies to join him in the same prison.
The instant Hawkins recognized that voice, he jolted in shock.
He recognized her right away as none other than Di Jinqian.
“Di Jinqian!” Hawkins bellowed in fury, glaring toward the source of the voice. Moments later, he spotted Zhan Lichuan, Di Jinqian, and Du Yanzheng striding toward him.
All three clutched walking canes.
Weapons were strictly banned inside the prison, so the sight of their canes immediately told Hawkins that these three were planning mischief.
Out of everyone, Hawkins loathed these three the most.
Without their interference, the Medical Federation never would have fallen into such a pitiful condition.
...
Being locked up in prison posed no real threat to Hawkins. He just needed to endure for a while longer until his mother and uncle busted him out.
“Hahaha! You lot put me in this mess without me even catching a glimpse of you, yet now you've delivered yourselves straight to my doorstep,” Hawkins taunted, an icy smirk curling his lips.
Jinqian saw that Hawkins lounged on a sofa draped in a robe, his hair still damp.
A swimming pool stretched out behind him, and his outfit clearly indicated a recent dip. He puffed on a cigarette while savoring sliced fruits, backed by several burly men posing as his bodyguards.
“Why the anger? Just because you've finally crossed paths with me? I figured you'd owe us some gratitude. Without us, how else could you lounge in this plush vacation pad?
“Glance at yourself. Acquaintances might grasp you're imprisoned, but outsiders would swear you're merely on holiday,” Jinqian shot back with equal mockery.
Hearing the taunt, Hawkins' eyes blazed with fury. A vicious, bloodthirsty grin twisted his features. He plucked the cigarette from his lips and flicked it lightly. The butt whirled through the air, sparking brightly before landing on the floor.
At that signal, all his surrounding men charged at Jinqian, Zhan Lichuan, and Du Yanzheng.
Even with merely 20 men in sight, Hawkins felt no alarm. Over 50 additional mercenaries lurked nearby. Having slipped into the prison unofficially, they lacked beds and hid covertly around him.
Hawkins remained completely at ease. He commanded at least 80 men right now, plus countless more within the prison eager to lay down their lives for him—at least 100 in total. They would surely overwhelm Jinqian.
A sly grin spread across Hawkins' face.
...
As his men clashed with them, Hawkins chuckled, “Di Jinqian, I'm dying to know. Where did you muster the nerve to waltz in here believing you'd stroll out alive?”
“Hawkins, you're in Area A of Centrals prison. Did you truly believe you could escape this fortress?”
Hawkins eyed Jinqian like a complete fool.
He couldn't suppress his laughter.
“I always pegged you as a sly vixen, sharp enough to dupe me thoroughly and land me behind bars. No one's ever pulled that off before. You were clever once, but what's with this idiocy now?
“Ah, it dawns on me. Di Jinqian, Zhan Lichuan, Du Yanzheng—did you assume this prison runs like those in Country Z? Hahaha!!! Ignorant of the fact that local law enforcement bows to the Hess family?
“Feast your eyes on my quarters! This spot brimmed with inmates before, but hating the rabble, I had the warden evict them all from the building.
“Care to wager? Would he lift a finger if I slaughtered every one of you?”
While pummeling one of the attackers, Jinqian sneered, “So you're claiming the warden answers to you?”
“Hahaha!!!” Hawkins erupted in booming laughter. “Di Jinqian, you're hopeless at prying secrets. Think I don't see through your scheme? Yet… signal jammers block everything here—no livestream possible. I know your play, but I'll indulge you with the truth you crave.
“Spot on. The warden serves the Hess family. The whole clan does. Who do you suppose he'll heed—you or me?
...
“Right here, today—this becomes your tomb! Drown in your blood, and no savior comes. Whatever transpires stays sealed within these walls, unknown to the outside world.
“Oh! My precious little brothers! I've schemed to end you both before, failing each attempt. I'd abandoned the notion, but since you've wandered into my lair, prepare to perish as well!
“Don’t hold this against me. As long as you two are alive, seizing control of the Hess family would be nearly impossible for me. For that to change, both of you must perish. So, I’m truly sorry, but today you’ll have to die alongside Di Jinqian.”
Before he could finish, Jinqian transformed her walking cane into a deadly weapon.
The men lingering near Hawkins had been biding their time, planning to join the fray only after their comrades fell. They watched the clash like casual onlookers at first. But in a flash, something streaked across their necks and vanished. Blood spurted from their throats, shocking them to the core.
Amid their lengthy exchange, everything shifted in an instant. The trio hadn’t taken down a single foe yet, but suddenly the momentum reversed completely.
No one grasped what occurred, yet all the men encircling Hawkins crumpled to the floor.
Hawkins’s eyes quivered at the horrifying sight.
Just moments before, arrogance and bravery defined him; now caution dominated his expression.
He desperately feigned indifference toward the chaos.
“Impressive. I never imagined you possessed such prowess. What was that move? I didn’t catch a glimpse, and my men are already down.”
Jinqian smirked and replied, “A tool designed to end your life in a heartbeat.”
At those words, Zhan Lichuan and Du Yanzheng charged at the four guards flanking Hawkins.
Hawkins barely managed a fleeting look.
It felt like a mere illusion.
Their movements were simply too swift.
Soft groans nearby drew his attention, revealing puncture wounds in the necks of his adjacent men. They hadn’t even reacted.
In that moment, Hawkins truly comprehended the fearsome nature of these three.
Fear finally flickered in his gaze.
“Guards! Get in here!”
Hawkins dashed into his room.
The room held a window that opened directly to the backyard.
Over 50 more of his subordinates waited outside.
He couldn’t fathom why they hadn’t stormed in at the disturbance. But now it dawned on him: Di Jinqian, Zhan Lichuan, and Du Yanzheng had brazenly entered because they carried devastating weapons.
Weapons…
Unlike anything he’d ever witnessed!
Fleeing desperately, Hawkins flung objects backward in panic, dreading a fatal pierce through his neck.
Jinqian and her two allies pursued like predators toying with prey, letting him scamper ahead while systematically eliminating the stragglers in the hallway.
Bursting into his room and flinging open the window, Hawkins faced a scene that struck like lightning.
Every protector dispatched by his mother lay slain by brutal hands.
The perpetrators hailed from the Hess family!
Why would they slaughter his bodyguards?!
Was Eddie plotting his demise?
Impossible!
Shock and bewilderment stretched Hawkins’s eyes wide.
Turning gradually, he confronted a grinning Jinqian, with Du Yanzheng and Zhan Lichuan beside her. He swallowed nervously.
His eyes then darted to the men who’d killed his guards.
As young master of both Hess and Hills, he knew pleading with them was pointless.
Dropping to his knees, Hawkins begged his brothers, “Second Brother, Third Brother, spare me this once! It’s… It’s entirely my fault. I never should’ve pursued you over some worthless title. Release me now, and I’ll sign a pact renouncing my claim forever.”
That plea ignited Jinqian’s retribution.
The cane clutched in her grasp morphed into a razor edge, slicing toward his right arm without mercy.
Hawkins moved to fire as danger registered, but his arm tumbled free.
Severed on the ground, his arm—and gun—were lost.
Though aware of his dire straits, Hawkins had banked on their fear of him.
This woman’s ethic-less amputation shattered that; rage now consumed him over fear.
“F**k! F**k! Ahhh! Di Jinqian! Do you even know who I am?! How dare you! How dare you harm me?!”
Boom!
Another blast rang out as Zhan Lichuan targeted Hawkins’s knee, the shot blasting through.
Hawkins unleashed a fresh wail of agony, arm torment merging with the new pain, leaving him writhing feebly on the floor, spark extinguished.
Jinqian beamed at the camera and declared, “Big brother, how’s this for revenge on my sister-in-law? Satisfied yet?”
From their headphones, Di Yunxi's voice rang out, saying, “En. I am. There’s nothing left for me here. You should take revenge for Ah Chuan and Yanzheng next.”
“Alright.”
Di Jinqian grinned down at the man sprawled on the floor. Arrogance had completely fled his expression, overtaken by sheer terror.
“Mr. Hawkins, those were merely gifts I prepared for you after you kidnapped my sister-in-law and nephew. Did you enjoy them?”
Like them?
What the f**K?!
He was on the brink of soiling his pants!
“I’m sorry, Miss Di! Please spare me! If you do, I’ll grant any request you have! My… My mother holds the position of elder in the Hess family. I can have her hand over all the money you desire! I… I can even hand over the Medical Federation to you.”
Hawkins at last understood his fate was sealed that day.
Nobody could have imagined these men daring to storm straight into the prison.
While he’d been ready to battle for the Medical Federation and the Hess family before, now with his life hanging by a thread, he had no choice but to abandon everything for a shot at survival.
“If you doubt me, I… I can summon my lawyer right now. I’ll transfer my shares to you! What… What do you say?”
“Nothing,” Du Yanzheng answered icily. “Because of your actions, my brother ended up paralyzed. He nearly lost his life. Do you really believe your pitiful shares could make up for my brother’s suffering?!”
Hawkins realized his words were falling on deaf ears.
“I never intended to kill him! I just feared he’d come back to the Hess family. My plan was only to wound him enough that he couldn’t return! I didn’t kill him!”
“The sole reason you spared his life was your belief that his blood held the key to the gene lab’s secrets. It had nothing to do with showing him mercy,” Jinqian exposed the harsh reality.
“No! I… I never!”
“You may kill me, but don’t you dare touch my brother! Got it?” Du Yanzheng demanded.
“Of course! I swear I’ll never try it again!” Hawkins bobbed his head desperately.
