The villagers, too, erupted in criticism, some even clamoring to expel the Ma Family from their midst and to drown Wang Baozhu in the village pond.
Wang Baozhu remained on the ground for a considerable duration, not out of unwillingness, but because a blow to her knee rendered her unable to rise.
"Are you alright?" Liang Xiaoyu turned her gaze towards Yang Ruxin.
"You’re closer to your time than I am," Yang Ruxin chuckled, her hand gripping Liang Xiaoyu's. "I’m fine, how about you?"
"I’m well too," Liang Xiaoyu replied with a smile.
Just then, the sound of approaching horse hooves filled the air. Soon, several swift horses arrived, led by Xie Zhanfei, an arrest officer from the County Governor’s Office.
The gathered townsfolk quickly cleared a wide space for them.
Xie Zhanfei dismounted, surveyed the scene, and first approached Yang Ruxin, offering a clasped fist salute. "Greetings, Madam Ruyi."
"Thank you for your courtesy, Officer Xie," Yang Ruxin acknowledged with a slight nod.
Without further ado, Xie Zhanfei turned and walked towards the Ma Family’s residence. "What precisely transpired here?"
The village chief hurried to his side, starting to recount the events.
Not long after, two more horse-drawn carriages appeared. Lizheng alighted from the first carriage. Unable to ride a horse, he had followed in a carriage with the coroner, arriving roughly a quarter of an hour later.
The coroner entered the yard, and the surrounding onlookers followed to the doorway to observe.
Yang Ruxin and her companions did not join the crowd.
Before long, a government official emerged, carrying an individual covered by a white sheet, and placed them into the second, rather unadorned carriage.
Subsequently, Ma Laifu was carried out, his lower body completely saturated with blood. It was rumored that Wang Baozhu had inflicted a severe injury upon his person, causing him to lose consciousness. Tian Jinhua was also carried out, reportedly having fainted from shock, while Ma Gouzi’s leg had been severed by Wang Baozhu. This entire family was to be transported to the medical clinic.
The coroner delivered further grim news: the infant, barely over a year old, had also perished and had ceased breathing some time ago. The preliminary finding indicated death by suffocation, with fingerprints discovered on the child’s neck corroborating that Wang Baozhu had indeed strangled him.
A pang of sadness touched Yang Ruxin’s heart; she had encountered the little boy previously. Despite some intellectual deficiencies, he had possessed a robust and endearing demeanor.
Wang Baozhu, now bound by handcuffs and leg shackles, passed by Yang Ruxin. Her eyes widened with fury, seemingly intent on consuming her. "Yang Ruxin, you will meet a terrible end."
"Spare your concern for my eventual demise; you yourself will not live much longer," Yang Ruxin retorted, spreading her hands. "Heaven’s transgressions may be forgiven, but one’s own cannot be undone."
"I shall not spare you, even as a spirit."
"There are countless individuals who harbor animosity towards me. What significance does your hatred hold?" Yang Ruxin scoffed. "I remain prepared for you to attempt my end."
Wang Baozhu attempted to speak further, but government officials pulled her away.
"What a commotion!" Li Xiang, having just heard the news and rushed over, was particularly irked to overhear Wang Baozhu’s threats. She spat in the direction of the retreating figure.
"You missed all the excitement," Yang Ruxin said, gently restraining Li Xiang and steering the conversation elsewhere.
"She's preoccupied with wedding preparations, completely oblivious to the world outside her window," Liang Xiaoyu playfully teased.
"Of course, getting married is a momentous occasion," Li Xiang pouted.
"What foolishness is this?" Aunt Hehua, who had followed behind, raised her hand as if to strike her daughter.
"Ever since my younger brother arrived, I’ve suspected I was adopted," Li Xiang quickly dodged, prompting Aunt Hehua’s renewed attempt to strike her. This time, however, Dong Wenxiu intervened.
Through this lighthearted exchange, the somber mood brought on by the recent tragedy began to dissipate.
