Before long, Wang Baozhu, disheveled with a blood-splattered face, burst from the yard, clutching her son in one hand and a gore-stained kitchen knife in the other.
The onlookers scrambled back, gripped by fear.
From within the yard, Ma Gouzi’s pained shouts echoed, "Wang Baozhu, you are truly ruthless!"
Yet, no one among the crowd dared to intervene. It wasn't out of callousness, but sheer terror. After all, a death had occurred, and Wang Baozhu’s demeanor was utterly frightful. Who knew if they would be the next to be sliced?
"Ma Gouzi, you tricked me into losing my purity back then, and now you’re nothing but a cripple," Wang Baozhu declared, her face contorted with fury. "With the Wang Family's line extinguished, you treat me as less than human. You all deserve death. You brought those men, treating me like a cheap prostitute. Now that someone’s dead, you want me to shoulder the blame? You're more wicked than any bandit… Let me tell you, if anyone dies today, we all go down together. I will not spare the Ma Family…"
Curiously, amidst the tumult and shouting, the child remained utterly silent, perhaps asleep.
Yang Ruxin observed with cool detachment. Karma, she mused. Neither Wang Baozhu’s kin nor Ma Gouzi’s family had ever taught their children proper conduct. How could their lives possibly turn out any better?
"Has anyone alerted the authorities?" a hushed voice inquired.
"Lizheng has already gone," came the swift reply. "A government official should be here shortly."
"And none of you are any better!" Wang Baozhu brandished the kitchen knife menacingly at the crowd once more. "If anyone dares to side with that heartless family, I’ll send them to their deaths!"
The crowd retreated further, taking several steps back.
"Yang Ruxin!" Wang Baozhu suddenly spotted Yang Ruxin standing nearby, her eyes instantly blazing with rage.
Yang Ruxin blinked, bewildered as to why her name was being called.
But Wang Baozhu suddenly lunged towards Yang Ruxin, the knife’s cold sheen aimed directly at her: "Yang Ruxin, I’m in this mess all because of you, die!"
Yang Ruxin’s brow furrowed. She had merely come to witness the spectacle; how had this escalated to involve her? Truly, she was a magnet for trouble.
A collective gasp rippled through the onlookers, while Zhao Xinghua and Liu Cuiyun instinctively moved forward, positioning themselves as human shields for Yang Ruxin and Liang Xiaoyu.
Dong Wenxiu and Feng Zilan reacted a beat slower, but they too took their places on either side, forming a protective cordon.
Even Liang Xiaoyu extended her arms, shielding Yang Ruxin from behind.
A flicker of warmth sparked in Yang Ruxin’s eyes—these instinctive gestures spoke volumes. They considered her their closest kin. These were the very people she ought to protect and cherish.
Not wanting to betray their concern, she remained still.
However, Wang Baozhu had taken only a few steps before she tripped, tumbling face-first into the dirt. The kitchen knife flew from her grasp, landing with a clatter near the crowd’s feet.
"You rabid dog!" Aunt Eight, quick to grasp the situation, suddenly yelled. "You’re useless yourself, yet you lash out at anyone within reach?" she added, noting the two pregnant women present. Her unchecked charge could have led to someone getting hurt.
"You malevolent wretch, what did my daughter ever do to you?" Dong Wenxiu angrily kicked Wang Baozhu. "You’re bringing this misfortune upon yourself and blaming innocent people?"
"Not a single decent person in that entire family," Feng Zilan spat, her voice laced with anger.
