The crowd in the rear erupted in boisterous laughter.
Yang Peili caught the cheerful sounds of laughter from the backyard, letting out yet another sigh.
Yang Rusong arrived just before lunch was served. He showed up alongside Sanni and the rest, clearly heading straight from school.
Yang Ruxin wasn't one to hold back; she invited them to stay for the meal, handed over several packets of herbal decoction, shared tips on ongoing care, outlined key warnings, and then arranged for Miao Jian to cart them home in the carriage.
Afterward, Yang Ruxin began reviewing the homework of the young children. Truth be told, she felt a swell of pride; maybe their talents varied, yet each one put in tremendous effort.
“Big sis, that Yang Ruohuai is so dumb,” Sini complained, her small hands now scabbed and flexible enough to gesture, unable to resist pouting, “He can’t even write a single character.”
Yang Ruxin set aside Xiaofeng’s writing practice, lifted her hand, and drew the children close: “But has he been studying diligently?”
“Very seriously. He practices characters even during our breaks,” Xiaofeng paused to think, then nodded.
“In that case, don’t mock him.” Yang Ruxin tousled Sini’s hair, “He might not match your smarts, but his effort is genuine. Learn from that attitude.”
Sini pouted, “But I don’t like him.”
“You’re free to dislike him, but don’t look down on someone who works hard at their studies.” Yang Ruxin tweaked Sini’s nose.
“He even asked me a question today, and I explained it to him,” Xiaofeng grinned, “And he thanked me too.”
“Well done.” Yang Ruxin stroked Xiaofeng’s head, “Everyone slips up sometimes. If he hasn’t done anything irredeemable and truly mends his ways, we ought to offer him a shot, don’t you think? Plus, he was just a kid before, with nobody guiding him on right and wrong—didn’t you all give him a thrashing once?”
“Fine then,” Sini huffed a sigh, “As long as he stops bullying folks later, I won’t lay a hand on him.”
Yang Ruxin laughed lightly: “Got it? Don’t pick fights, but if trouble comes your way, talk it out first; if they refuse to own up, strike back fiercely.”
“Yes!” the children chorused together.
“Now go and play.” Yang Ruxin gave each child’s head a gentle pat.
“Big sis, earlier on the way home, we spotted Yang Daju hauling her husband back,” Sanni lingered as the others scampered off, “Wang Liuzhi was sprawled out on the ox cart the whole trip.”
“He’s back, sure, but it’s no concern of ours,” Yang Ruxin chuckled, “Just steer clear of that household from now on.”
“Got it. Oh, and do you know what befell Wang Baozhu?” Sanni dropped her voice once more, though excitement danced in her eyes.
“Out with it quick, no more suspense.”
“The Ma Family locked her away,” Sanni pursed her lips, “Word is, they tormented her too.”
“Tormented?” Yang Ruxin arched a brow faintly, “Where’d you pick that up?”
Sanni’s gaze darted slyly: “Er, I sorta went to…”
“Tell me now!” Yang Ruxin seized her arm.
“We listened in at the Ma Family’s rear window,” Sanni rubbed her nose sheepishly.
“Listened in? All of you?” Yang Ruxin rose to her feet.
Sanni ducked her head.
“Big sis, it was my plan entirely,” Zhou Xiao burst through the door and shielded Sanni, “Mengmeng wasn’t involved at all.”
