Yang Ruxin hosted her siblings from school for lunch, reviewed their lessons with pride, and taught them to respect hardworking classmates like the struggling Yang Ruohuai while emphasizing self-defense and second chances. Sanni reported seeing Yang Daju return with her injured husband on an ox cart and shared village gossip. She confessed to eavesdropping at the Ma Family's window with Zhou Xiao, learning that Wang Baozhu had been locked up and tortured.

Du Juan let out a chuckle she couldn’t hold back, "I can only comfort myself like this."

On that day, Du Yunpeng brought the agreement for a private two-hour chat with Yang Ruxin, then emerged wiping away his tears. What they talked about remained a mystery to everyone, and nobody bothered to ask.

Du Chengxiu began evaluating the household servants right away. Before departing, he wanted to secure someone trustworthy to cover for his family’s absence, making sure Yang Ruxin had dependable help.

The choices were finalized quickly. Miao Jian took over as butler, and Granny Huang, whom Dong Wenxiu had brought from Hangzhou, was put in charge of the inner courtyard.

Qian Er was selected to step into Du Yunpeng’s shoes as the chief store manager.

In the days ahead, it turned out that the picks by Du Chengxiu and Du Yunpeng were spot on. These three proved fully capable, though that’s a tale for later.

For the moment, the Du Family kept their arrangements under wraps, so the Yang Family remained unaware.

Yang Peili’s condition kept getting better. He could now stroll around independently without any help. Thanks to the nourishing meals over recent days, he looked more vibrant and even had some extra flesh on his cheeks.

He hated to go, but lingering longer felt awkward. Even without being urged, he proposed heading back himself.

"Why don’t we..." Dong Wenxiu started to suggest, but caught herself mid-sentence, snapping her mouth shut and shooting a look at Yang Ruxin.

"Yes." Yang Ruxin gave a nod, "Though the recovery’s going well, steer clear of any jolts and definitely skip heavy exertion."

Yang Peili nodded, a spark of hope flickering in his chest.

"It’s the twentieth of the twelfth month today. The school’s just half a day before breaking for holidays." Yang Ruxin made no move to detain him, "I’ll get someone to tell Rusong to come fetch you."

The faint hope in Yang Peili’s heart crumbled, yet he felt little surprise since he’d half-expected it. He nodded at once, "Alright."

"Xinxin, your grandpa’s really pitiable." After Yang Peili retreated to his room, Dong Wenxiu couldn’t resist saying, "Why don’t we..."

"Mom." Yang Ruxin sighed deeply, "Keeping him here now means endless headaches down the line. Mom, I lack the stamina for daily dramas like these. It’s done and over—can you stop going soft out of nowhere?"

"Yes, Wenxiu." Feng Zilan nodded too, "It’s not only the old man from the main house. Remember those sisters, Yang Baihe and Yang Baihui. If they kick up a storm daily, how could anyone live peacefully?"

Dong Wenxiu waved her hands hastily, "I was wrong. This soft spot of mine just won’t go away."

"Mom, see, your tender heart pops up now and then, but do you truly think the old house folks will turn over a new leaf?" Erni joined in to convince her.

"Mom’s owned up to her error, so quit the nagging." Dong Wenxiu scratched her head, "I’ll whip up lunch today as my sorry."

"I want zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste)." Yang Ruxin shot her hand up first.

"I want egg fried rice." Gu Yao, ever glued to Erni’s side, raised his hand next.

"I want wontons." Erni lifted her hand in turn.

"I want..."

"You lot of ingrates." Dong Wenxiu laughed, "Fine, I’ll cook it all." She then tugged Feng Zilan, "You’re coming too."

"Why me? I was set to just lounge and chow down..." Feng Zilan grumbled while trailing after her.
