Yang Ruxin struggled with embroidery, pricking her fingers while attempting a Peppa Pig design, and sought help from the others. Erni teased her impatience but presented a basket of pre-embroidered bellybands, crafted by their mother and Aunt Feng with festive patterns like twin lotuses and mandarin ducks, suitable for boys or girls. Overwhelmed, Yang Ruxin recognized the designs from a past dream of her babies wearing them and recalled a previous-life news story about a woman birthing rare triplets.

Back then, Yang Ruxin and her little brothers felt utterly stunned by these odds.

Countless urban couples battling infertility drain their fortunes on IVF and similar treatments, yet often fail to have kids. Meanwhile, folks in tougher spots deliver triplets, or even quads and quints. How exasperating is that?

Yet now, she had joined the elite one in seven hundred thousand. Oh my God, joy or dread—which should it be?

Joy from the belief that more kids bring more fortune; dread over the poor medical care around here.

"Big sister?" Erni at last spotted Yang Ruxin’s strange state and called out right away.

"Huh?" Yang Ruxin jolted back to the present.

"I said I crafted little shoes for the nephew—have a look." Erni extended a pair of red shoes featuring embroidered tiger heads, "Might be too tiny, though Mom and Aunt Feng say newborns’ feet match this size."

"Make a couple more pairs." Yang Ruxin seized the tiny shoes and fiddled with them.

"But babies grow so quick—they outgrow stuff in a month, these could be tight by then." Erni wrinkled her brow, "Make 'em bigger?"

"No, whip up two more just like these." Yang Ruxin tweaked Erni’s cheek, "All thanks to their second aunt."

"Hey, quit that." Erni swatted her hand off, "If they don’t fit later, don't pin it on me."

"Big cousin..." Right then, a shout echoed from outside, "Big cousin, you hear? Grandpa ain't doing good..."

Yang Ruxin knit her brows—Grandpa unwell? Which one? What happened? Yang Peili perhaps? The old guy looked healthy last I saw; how'd he crash so fast?

Erni picked up on it too: "That's Yang Ruohuai, I think."

Yang Ruxin stood up, Chai Qin rushing to support her as they headed out.

After yelling from the front gate, Yang Ruohuai got led into the yard with a stern warning, so he now waited there obediently.

Yang Ruohuai turned seven this year and acted quite mature. He'd been utterly pampered by Feng Caie and Yang Anshi before, but Scholar Feng later took him in for direct tutoring, curbing his wild ways somewhat.

Plus, Yang Anshi's paralysis left her handling nothing more, while Feng Caie got tamed by her eldest Yang Rusong. Yang Rusong ruled his little brother strictly too, turning the boy far more decent.

He yearned to visit Big Aunt's house for the fine food and clothes, plus fun with Xiaofeng and crew—they knew tons with plenty of playmates. Still, he dreaded the folks here after thrashings from Sini and Xiaofeng.

Yang Ruxin had thrashed him good too—that hurt for real—and long after, spotting her made his rear twinge.

Yang Ruxin strode out: "What'd you yell about?"

"I..." Yang Ruohuai shrank back two steps on reflex, "I..."

"Speak plainly." Yang Ruxin hadn't aimed to spook the child, but warmth for the second branch eluded her. Even a kid so cruel to Sini and Erya so young couldn't melt her heart. Her voice thus held an unhurried command.

Flustered, Yang Ruohuai dropped to his knees: "Big cousin, grandpa got beaten... beaten... nearly dead..."
