"BOOOOOM!"
"BOOM!"
"BOOOOM!"
Deafening blasts echoed through the shadowy metropolis, with enormous detonations ripping apart the horizon. Structures got sliced in half, their top sections tumbling down while pieces of rock and metal plummeted onto the roads underneath. Clouds of dust and rubble filled the sky, obscuring the faint illumination in this desolate realm.
Cain's gaze cut like daggers while he skimmed over the edge of a decaying structure, his boots scarcely grazing the broken rock. Midway through his turn, he evaded a crushing attack from Bako by a hair's breadth, then lifted his limb to smash the web of strands unleashed by Hako. His actions flowed smoothly, accurately, without pause.
His gaze tightened suddenly.
"One hundred heartbeats."
While battling the pair of Curse Eaters head-on, Cain kept track silently in his thoughts. Precisely that many pulses passed before Sozing could restore his immense pushing power.
Right on schedule, Sozing's gaze lit up. The mortal Curse Eater bounded ahead, placing himself right in Cain's path. His palm stretched out, and moments later, the pushing power burst forth at maximum strength.
The surge hit the Scarlet King from close range.
Blood spurted from the Scarlet King's mouth as the force flung him into a structure, bursting through barriers and beams prior to slamming onto the pavement beneath. The earth cracked upon landing, crimson liquid splattering over the split rocks.
Cain gritted his teeth—yet he showed no delay.
In the midst of dropping, he spun his form, just missing Bako as the giant Curse Eater dropped from overhead. Cain retaliated right away, slamming a savage left hook right into Bako's torso.
The impact sank into the Curse Eater's torso, marking only the beginning. Immediately after, Zero-State Energy exploded upon impact, hurling Bako away.
However, prior to the sequence completing, the Curse Eater's core structure altered. The force got countered during its growth, scattered before it could rip him to shreds.
Cain's stare intensified, though surprise evaded him.
Adaptation defined Bako's core skill, rendering injury to the Curse Eater extremely difficult.
Not wasting any time, Cain darted to the side, barely escaping strands pouring from the sky. He bounced from one edifice to the next, his silhouette racing across the gloomy urban sprawl akin to a shooting star. His form darted over summits and ruined barriers while hunting for a vulnerability.
The trio of Curse Eaters assembled swiftly.
They extended their senses everywhere, bracing their forms firmly. Sozing stayed centered amid the pair, evidently needing the greatest safeguard. In contrast to Bako and Hako, he possessed no swift recovery skill.
This offered no security to the rest.
Each hit from Cain delivered crushing harm—burning both body and essence. Their power supplies dwindled perilously near empty.
"BOOM."
"BOOM."
"BOOM."
Detonations resounded more rapidly as the Scarlet King turned into a mere shadow for the three. His speed cracked the atmosphere, shock ripples spreading with each stride.
Then he attacked.
Cain dashed at Sozing's rear, his spread palm shining with brilliant purple-gold power, set to deliver a ruinous tearing strike. Bako and Hako responded without delay—but they couldn't halt the Scarlet King in time.
Sozing stayed composed.
A faint grin formed on his lips as he spread his palm and unleashed the pushing power again, thrusting rearward with all his might.
The following moment—
The Scarlet King's form shredded apart.
Astonishment surged in the Curse Eaters' thoughts.
"A clone."
Before regaining their footing, the true Cain materialized right before Hako.
The jester-like Curse Eater responded on reflex, spinning his strands into a shell encasing his frame. Cain's left palm stabbed directly through, embedding deeply into Hako's torso.
A huge barrel of Zero-State Force burst from inside.
The blast demolished Hako's insides, ripping him open from within. A vast hollow opened in his torso, almost wiping out his
form completely.
A broad grin stretched over Cain's features—
—right when Bako's enormous punch crashed against him.
The strike launched Cain far off, smashing through several
structures until he came to a halt. Violet fires blazed over his frame, swiftly mending his injuries as he lifted skyward again.
Cain viewed the group steadily.
Sozing and Bako had swiftly placed themselves guarding Hako, protecting the jester Curse Eater as he fought to recover. Yet it was
evident an issue persisted.
The injury proved far too grave.
Hako's recovery stuttered. His frame jerked feebly, unable to mend his broken shape. The glow in his gaze faded swiftly.
Cain's look grew icy and determined.
"One down," he murmured softly. "Two to go."
Sozing and Bako gripped their hands tightly.
Yet Hako displayed the strongest reaction.
The Curse Eater's gaze burned with resolve as his whole frame
burst into spiritual power. His solid body melted away fully, shifting into a ghostly state that rushed toward
Sozing.
Moments later, Hako manifested in front of him, his strands embedding into Sozing's frame—not for damage, but to link with his arms and
tendons like a controller.
Strength flowed intensely.
Sozing cast a quick look at the ghost with a slight grin, then shifted
his focus to Cain, deadly murderous aura emanating from his stare. He and Bako lunged ahead as one.
Cain's crimson-glowing eyes ignited in reply, his fighting spirit surging fiercely.
He sped ahead.
Cain and Sozing's punches met.
An enormous pressure blast exploded, twisting the atmosphere and making
nearby edifices creak while panes broke and barriers fell. The Scarlet King sensed a huge boost in Sozing's bodily strength—the outcome of Hako's controlling skill enhancing his form.
Sozing spun his body with astonishing velocity and accuracy,
launching a strike at Cain's head.
Cain parried it, yet his gaze expanded.
A brilliant shine resembling the brilliance of countless stars started to build behind
him.
Bako's huge limb had changed.
All the twisted bumps on it illuminated intensely as they funneled every bit of power Bako had collected thus far. The force gathered quickly, shaping into a giant barrel pointed straight at the Scarlet King.
And it prepared to unleash.
