The City’s Strongest Son-in-law Chapter 1222 - 1221: Doubts in His Heart
Previously on The City’s Strongest Son-in-law...
The throbbing in Su Changfeng's head ceased, prompting him to lower the hand he’d been holding there as the maid departed.
A frown creased Su Changfeng's brow. He recognized his current lack of knowledge made any hasty actions unwise. His priority was to acclimatize to this new world before contemplating his next steps.
While the marriage felt undeniably bizarre to Su Changfeng, it offered a strange sort of advantage in his present predicament. Having a legitimate identity, at least on paper, meant others would be less likely to question his sudden appearance.
"I never imagined I’d find myself married again," Su Changfeng mused aloud, his voice low. "Han Xue, please forgive me. This is not something I chose. I've been in a coma this entire time."
Leaving Su Changfeng's chamber, the maid proceeded to another room.
Shen Rushuang had already shed her wedding attire, her countenance considerably displeased. Su Changfeng's unexpected awakening was clearly an unwelcome development for her.
"So, what information did he seek?" Shen Rushuang inquired.
"My lady, he appears to have no recollection of his past. He simply inquired about his surroundings and the reason for his marriage to you," the maid responded with deference.
Shen Rushuang scoffed. "I had truly believed that wedding a useless man who would never awaken would resolve all my troubles. Who could have predicted such a fortunate turn of events for him, waking precisely now? I must ensure he is eliminated. He is such a disgrace, utterly unworthy to be my husband!"
"My lady, you were only just married today. Would eliminating him now not completely derail your plans?" the maid asked, a hint of worry in her voice.
A faint smile touched Shen Rushuang's lips. "It shall not fail entirely. He is already my husband by law. Once he is gone, I can dedicate myself to mourning him. For such a useless man, three years of peace should be sufficient!"
"My lady, do you have a strategy in mind?" the maid pressed.
"The hunting tournament in Tianshui City is fast approaching, is it not? It will be a simple matter to arrange his demise then," Shen Rushuang stated with icy resolve.
Su Changfeng found himself confined to a room, the door secured from the outside. While he knew a wooden door posed no real obstacle, he hesitated to venture out recklessly. What sort of world lay beyond these walls? What challenges would he face upon exiting? These were questions he could not yet answer.
Therefore, despite the uncomfortable sensation of confinement, he resolved to endure it. Every action he took now required utmost caution, for death here would mean never again seeing Shen Hanxue and Ye Nianhai.
As night descended, Su Changfeng lay on the bed, hearing approaching footsteps outside.
It was the same maid from earlier, this time bringing him a meal.
The food was surprisingly palatable, yet the maid's persistent presence by his side made Su Changfeng uneasy.
"Have you been the one attending to me throughout this time?" Su Changfeng inquired.
"Yes, it was my lady's command," the maid replied tonelessly, her demeanor akin to an emotionless automaton.
"Then how did I manage to eat while I was unconscious?" Su Changfeng asked, puzzled. He found it hard to believe one could survive a coma without any sustenance.
"Liquid nourishment," the maid answered, her words clipped and devoid of warmth.
Su Changfeng nodded and continued, "Who is your lady, and does the Shen Family hold significant standing in Tianshui City?"
"Tianshui City is dominated by three major families, the Shen Family being one of them. Naturally, they are a prominent clan," the maid stated. Shen Rushuang had specifically instructed her to answer any questions he posed; otherwise, she would have remained largely silent.
Su Changfeng offered a slight smile, surprised by his unexpected good fortune. Upon arriving in the Outer Domain and before he could even orient himself, he had been 'married' into a powerful family, thus circumventing any potential period of hardship.
"Why did your lady wish to marry me?" Su Changfeng questioned, though he harbored a suspicion, he lacked definitive knowledge.
"The City Lord's son desired to marry my lady, but she harbored no affection for him. Therefore, she chose you as a means of evasion," the maid explained.
"Did no one object to her decision? You must realize I was essentially unresponsive at the time," Su Changfeng probed.
The maid's brow furrowed slightly. "Unresponsive? What does that term mean?"
Su Changfeng's eyelid twitched. The word likely held no currency in this Outer Domain. He needed to exercise greater caution, lest his origins be deduced.
"It signifies nothing, merely a figure of speech indicating someone who might never awaken," Su Changfeng clarified.
The maid seemed to understand. "The marriage received the approval of both my lady and her family," she replied.
Su Changfeng's lips curled slightly. It appeared not only the lady was peculiar, but the entire family might be! Rejecting a marriage proposal from the esteemed City Lord's son in favor of an unresponsive man – was the City Lord's son truly so undesirable?
"Wouldn't marrying into the City Lord's Mansion be a more favorable prospect? Why would your young lady be so opposed to it?" Su Changfeng inquired, a touch of bewilderment in his voice.
Impatience flickered in the maid's eyes as she replied coldly, "Kindly conclude your meal swiftly. Arrangements will be made for someone to assist you with bathing and changing your attire later."
Assistance with bathing?
Su Changfeng instinctively took a whiff of himself, suddenly realizing the truth. He had been in a deep slumber for an extended period, yet no unpleasant odor clung to him; instead, a subtle fragrance emanated from his person.
"Was I attended to and bathed even while I was unconscious?" Su Changfeng probed further.
"Indeed."
A wry smile touched Su Changfeng's lips inwardly. This implied that the Shen Family's servants had already had complete access to him, hadn't they?
Not long after, several maids arrived, carrying hot water. While these maids possessed considerable attractiveness, Su Changfeng found himself unable to accept their assistance in bathing. As a man from the modern era, such unsolicited attention and advantage-taking were utterly unacceptable to him.
This was not to say he was disloyal to Shen Hanxue, but the idea of others watching him, even touching him, was a notion he simply could not reconcile himself with.
"All of you may depart. I am capable of managing on my own. You need not help me from this point forward," Su Changfeng declared. Previously, when he was delirious and weak, there was no alternative but to permit their assistance. However, now that he was lucid, he absolutely refused to allow them to aid him in such a personal matter.
The maids remained motionless, seemingly disregarding Su Changfeng's directive.
A flicker of indignation rose within Su Changfeng as he stated, "All of you, leave! There is no need for your service here!"
"You may go," Shen Rushuang appeared at that precise moment, her arrival finally diffusing the building tension.
Upon his first glance, Su Changfeng was struck by her stunning appearance. Even upon seeing her in ordinary attire for the second time, Shen Rushuang retained an exquisite beauty.
It had to be acknowledged that she was a woman of genuine allure. Yet, paradoxically, the more alluring she appeared, the more Su Changfeng's curiosity intensified regarding her reluctance to marry into the City Lord's Mansion.
