Director Jin and his team fall into an ambush at an "abandoned" research institute, realizing the quiet surroundings and oddly new wooden boxes were a trap. Mutants are released from a descending lift and from the boxes, forcing the GAJ members into a fierce battle. Meanwhile, Ye Shikai's team encounters researchers and discovers cages filled with test subjects, learning that the irreversible HST project has created victims with no antidote.

In fact, if these people can’t return to how they were, then turning into someone like De, relying on drugs to preserve their lives, might actually be the best choice. At least as long as they have the medication, they can stay alive, and live in human form. According to the staff at the National Security Bureau prison, De normally didn’t have any physical abnormalities, and his test results were healthy—of course, that’s under the premise that he kept taking the drug.

"Whatever the case, let’s get them out first. These people are already severely malnourished. Have the accompanying medical team treat them, and we’ll talk about what comes next later." With no other choice, Ye Shikai made his decision. These people probably still had no idea what was going to happen; he should let them feel some "hope" first.

"Yes."

"Everyone, please come with me. We’ll provide medical care." Several Hidden Guards led the crowd back, while the rest stayed where they were.

"Kai, what do we do next?" Chen Yuxin asked back.

"We keep moving forward. George must still be ahead—don’t let him slip away." Ye Shikai said firmly. It wasn’t just this research site; in Yanjing, in Hong Kong, and in the South American HST base, there were still so many people who’d been kidnapped and brought in. All of that was George’s fault. As the mastermind behind it, he had to be punished severely.

"What about these researchers?" Chen Yuxin asked. Those people looked terrified, scared Ye Shikai would give a single order and have them all slaughtered. After all, even if they weren’t the prime culprit, they were still important accomplices. If it weren’t for their mastery of advanced technology, the HST project would still be nothing but a pipe dream.

"Their crimes are unforgivable. We should kill them and be done with it."

"Forget it. Have them all escorted out and detained for now. We still need to get some information out of them." Ye Shikai suggested.

"All right, I’ll do as you say."

Roar, roar.

Suddenly, the faint roar of mutants came through the air. Everyone tensed up at once, and the detained researchers were so terrified they dropped to the floor. It was really quite ironic if you thought about it...

"Everyone, stay sharp." Ye Shikai shouted. But the roar was rather low and muffled, indicating the mutants weren’t nearby. They should be farther away—or more likely, Nightmare or Jin Li had run into them.

"Someone must have encountered mutants." Ye Shikai’s expression grew grim. He’d expected this long ago, but he still had a bad feeling, hoping no one would get killed.

"Kai, then what do we do?"

"We keep going."

"Okay."

..................

Bang.

Roar, roar.

"Shen Wu, careful." Jin Li grabbed Shen Wu’s hand, yanked hard, pulling him behind, then swung his blade backhand and sliced off a mutant’s head. Perhaps even Ye Shikai didn’t know that Jin Li was also a cultivation expert. Although Jin Li held a key position, that didn’t mean he had no martial skill; in reality his strength was unfathomable. But faced with this many mutants, he still seemed somewhat outmatched.

"There really are a lot of these freaks."

"Open fire, take them down."

Bang bang bang.

The National Security Bureau’s cultivation experts held the front line, while the others fired their guns to shoot the mutants in support. The situation quickly stabilized as they gradually wiped out all the mutants charging in.

"Kill!"

Jin Li’s blade rose and fell, cutting down the last mutant. His body was already spattered with mutant blood, a thick dark green that looked disgusting. Worried the blood might affect normal humans, he hurriedly wiped it clean with a cloth.

"How many casualties?"

"Over thirty dead, and more than twenty wounded." Shen Wu reported. Although they didn’t panic in the face of danger, these mutants were no pushover, especially in such a confined space. Facing forty or fifty mutants, Jin Li had already gone all out.

"Send the wounded to the main hall for treatment."

"Yes, Director Jin."

Ten minutes later.

"Director Jin, what do we do next? We haven’t found any tunnel here, or any kind of entrance."

"Look, isn’t that one right there?" Jin Li pointed at the lift. There was an opening at the top. Those mutants had gone into the lift and been sent down, where they’d fought with them. In other words, ride the lift up, and you’d get to the next place.

"Director Jin, wouldn’t this be too dangerous? Those mutants came down by this lift. If we just go up like this, won’t we be walking straight into them?" Jing Xie tried to dissuade him. This lift was fairly big, but at the end of the day it was still just a lift, able to carry at most thirty people up at once, and a full cycle up and down took some time. If they wanted to send everyone up, it might take an hour.

"At this point, even if it’s dangerous, we still have to go take a look." Jin Li opened the lift door. Without another word, Jing Xie stepped straight inside.

"Jing Xie, you..."

"If Tianjing were here now, he’d probably choose to go up too." Jing Xie said calmly.

"We’re going as well." Shen Wu and Phoenix volunteered to go up, and the National Security Bureau members behind them also stepped forward one after another.

"Even if it’s a mountain of blades and a sea of fire up there, we’re going to break through it together."

"Good."

Jin Li selected a little over twenty cultivation experts. The situation above was unknown, and they hadn’t brought any drone equipment, so all they could do was grit their teeth and go.

Everyone boarded the lift, and the others operated the control console to send the lift up.

"Once we’re up there, stay alert. There may be more mutants above. Form a defensive formation, then immediately send the lift back down and bring the rest up." Jin Li instructed.

"Yes."

"Yes."

Rumble rumble rumble...

The lift’s startup sound was loud. Everyone held their breath. When they reached the top level, no one spoke. It was very quiet inside.

Three seconds, two seconds, one second—arrived.

Bang.

"Move!"

Jin Li charged out first—and just as he’d hoped, there were no mutants inside. Instead, there was a long corridor. The others came out right behind him, quickly spreading into a defensive formation. They shone their flashlights down the passage; it was still completely empty and very quiet, nothing like a place with mutants. Jing Xie was the last to step out, and he sent the lift back down again.

Half an hour later.

"Director Jin, everyone’s up. I left a few brothers below to cover our rear." Jing Xie said.

"Good. The rest of you, follow me in." Jin Li ordered. The corridor was narrow, just wide enough for four people to walk abreast. It was hard to imagine that those mutants had just come through this corridor to enter the lift.

"Stop. I think there’s movement ahead."
