Celeste Linden and Ethan Barnes share an intimate moment. Celeste flirts with Ethan, who is surprised by her newfound boldness. Ethan reveals he has been faking his illness to trick her into marrying him, a plan he concocted with an "old man."

Celeste Linden fell silent; she’d finally coaxed the truth out of him.

This had all been his setup, from the very beginning—calculating how to force her into marrying him.

He’d been lying to her from start to finish.

“Celeste, I don’t know how to explain it. I actually didn’t tell the old man to say that, but he said that was the only way to get you to agree. Later I found out he’d told you I had problems in bed, I even went to argue with him about it. Really, I’m not lying to you.”

Celeste looked at him. “Then what about the dream I had? That wasn’t a dream at all, it was real, wasn’t it?”

At that, Ethan Barnes immediately grabbed her soft little hand, his face full of placating eagerness. “Celeste, it was all real. I couldn’t help myself, I couldn’t control it. You’re already my wife, and every night you’re lying right next to me and I can look but not touch—do you know how crazy that drove me? So I took advantage of you being sound asleep and did those things to you.”

Celeste let out a cold snort, fixing him with an icy stare.

Ethan blurted out all the truth in one go; she was tormenting him too much tonight, he had no choice but to surrender.

Only now, as he came back to his senses, did he notice how wrong her expression looked, and a vague sense of dread crept in. “Celeste, just now you said as long as I told the truth, you’d forgive me for everything.”

Celeste said, “I lied to you. Can’t I?”

Ethan was dumbfounded. “…”

Celeste’s lips curled in a cold smile. “You’ve been lying to me all along, keeping me completely in the dark. You’ve had me in the palm of your hand, playing with me. Is that fun for you?”

“What, you’re allowed to lie to me, but I can’t lie to you once? Ethan, if I hadn’t tricked you today, how much longer were you planning to keep this from me?”

“You’re a fucking liar!”

Listening to her accusations, Ethan started to panic. So she’d been lying to him too; all that tenderness and sweetness just now had been an act.

“Celeste, don’t get worked up, listen to me…”

“Enough. I’ve listened to you far too much already. Now I don’t want to hear another word. Get out of here right now, I don’t want to see you!”

Celeste shoved a pillow and quilt into his arms and ruthlessly kicked him out of the bedroom again.

Ethan hadn’t even put his slippers on; barefoot on the floor, clutching his bedding, he stood by the door looking at Celeste. “Celeste, how can you be so heartless? You promised me I could come in and sleep with you two tonight.”

“Get out!”

Ethan was afraid of upsetting her further and hurriedly said, “Okay, okay, I’ll go. Don’t be mad, let’s just talk this through. Be careful, the baby in your…”

He didn’t dare finish the sentence; his voice cut off abruptly.

“Why did you stop? You think I still don’t know? There’s your child in my belly—I’m pregnant again, isn’t that right?”

Ethan’s pupils contracted; she actually knew everything!

“Ethan, you knew perfectly well I was pregnant, yet that day in the hospital you lied and said it was just indigestion. What were you thinking? Were you trying to coax me into having this baby?”

Ethan pressed his lips together and cut her off. “Celeste, are you saying you want to get rid of this baby? This is our child.”

Celeste’s long lashes trembled slightly; in truth, she still hadn’t decided what to do about the baby in her womb. Her mind was a mess.

All of this had happened to her passively; she’d never had the right to choose. She hated the man in front of her so much.

From the day he appeared, he’d taken control of her entire life.

“Ethan, then listen carefully: I don’t want this child!” Celeste’s eyes reddened as she forced the words out, one by one.
