Morgan Ashworth confronts Ethan Barnes, demanding he stay away from Morgan's sister and Danielle, citing their past relationship and Ethan's current marriage. Later, Ethan returns home to find his wife, Carlotta, berating the maids and exploding with anger upon seeing him, questioning his prolonged absence.

"No! Absolutely not! We can vouch for that!"

Carlotta still refused to let it go. "Hmph, like I’d believe that!"

The trusted subordinates wanted to say more, but Ethan Barnes had already taken his long strides upstairs. He clearly had no intention of responding to Carlotta.

Carlotta felt she was being ignored yet again, and she started throwing a tantrum.

The few trusted subordinates stared, dumbfounded, exchanging looks. Why did it feel like their boss had married some... shrew from the countryside?

...

In the study.

Ethan went in and took a cold shower, then a doctor came over to treat his wound.

"General, your wound was dangerously close to the heart. Luckily we got the bullet out in time, otherwise it would’ve been bad."

Ethan pressed his thin lips together and said nothing.

"General, I’ve finished treating it. For the next while, don’t get it wet and watch what you eat a little. With your young, strong physique, it should scab over and heal pretty fast."

"Got it. You can go."

"Yes, sir." The doctor withdrew.

Ethan sat down in the office chair. He’d just showered, and his neat short hair was still misted with droplets, making it look dark and shiny, extra fresh. He pulled a cigarette out of the pack and slowly lit it.

Blue smoke soon curled up, blurring his handsome face.

No one knew how long he smoked for, but eventually he lay down on the sofa and fell asleep.

When he opened his eyes again, it was already early the next morning. His phone was ringing—someone was calling.

He took out his phone and saw it was Daniel Langdon.

Daniel was his good brother. Back in the day, both the Barnes and Lee families were old aristocratic clans. The Lee family had always been in politics, and Daniel had been a prodigy since childhood; three years ago he’d already become the youngest university professor.

Ethan pressed the button to pick up. Daniel’s gentle voice came through. "Hey, Ethan, are you busy today? I’m treating you and Carlotta to a meal."

Ethan raised his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Today?"

"Yeah. I’ve got a girlfriend now, and I want to bring her out for you two to meet."

Daniel had a girlfriend and wanted to introduce her to them—that alone showed how seriously he was taking this relationship.

Ethan nodded. "Okay."

After hanging up, Ethan got up and walked out. To show his respect, Daniel also called Carlotta, so Carlotta was already busy getting dressed up.

The gloom lifted from Carlotta; her mood brightened completely. She was trying on new clothes and even happily spun twice in front of Ethan. "Honey, do I look good in this dress?"

"You look good."

Carlotta ran over and threw her arms around Ethan, her voice soft as she apologized. "Honey, I saw the doctor come last night, so I really misunderstood you. I’m sorry. You’re out there working hard and getting hurt, and I’m still throwing tantrums and giving you attitude. I’ll change from now on."

Ethan reached out and pushed Carlotta away. He said mildly, "It’s fine. As long as you’re happy."

"I’m very happy right now. Daniel’s finally seeing someone. Back when he hung out with us, his standards were sky-high. I wonder who managed to capture him?"

"I have to dress up extra pretty so I don’t lose to Daniel’s girlfriend. Honey, I’ll help you hold up the fort."

Ethan’s expression barely changed.

...

An hour later, the two of them arrived at a very stylish Western restaurant. Daniel waved. "Ethan, Carlotta, over here."

Ethan turned his head and saw Daniel—and beside Daniel was... Celeste Linden.
