Gina dismissed Ulyn, turning to Jason with a curious gaze.
’Babe, are things really going to be alright? You don’t seem bothered at all by the arguments.’
Jason simply hummed in response, assuring her that everything was unfolding as planned. He had anticipated other candidates vying for the seat and, after considering the number of contenders and the voting council members, calculated that he would need a minimum of four votes to secure the highest tally. Fortunately, Jason already had four council members he could rely on: Lamina, whose loyalty was unwavering; Hesabeth, who had already pledged her support; Farlow, indebted to Jason’s family for past favors; and T’arigan, Farlow’s ally.
However, relying solely on these four presented a dilemma. While it would guarantee him the lead in votes, Lamina’s overt support could negatively influence the council’s perception of him, leading them to believe she couldn't form her own opinions. To maintain Lamina’s independent image, Jason opted for three votes instead of four. This outcome was precisely as he had orchestrated, and now he merely awaited the opportune moment to reveal his final trump card.
For over ten minutes, the council had been engaged in heated debate, with opinions swaying between candidates. Farlow, usually a reserved council member, had become surprisingly vocal, advocating passionately for Jason, which stunned many of his colleagues. Both Farlow and Hesabeth had been locked in a debate against Rak’hael and Baron Skarr for some time before C’thlyanu finally intervened.
"I believe our deliberations have extended long enough. The esteemed council members have voiced their preferences, and further arguments are unlikely to alter our stances. Therefore, it is time to consult the Primordial Treaty to ensure a fair and impartial selection process. Article 45, Section 3 of the Primordial Treaty, pertaining to council formation, stipulates that should a seat become vacant or be forfeited, another member of the race that previously held the seat may assume it, provided their cultivation rank is no lower than one rank below the former seat holder."
"Regrettably, no members of the Machina race meet this qualification. Thus, we must proceed to the subsequent provisions of the treaty. Section 4 of the same Article outlines three criteria for selecting a new member for a Primordial Domain to ascend as its Overlord. Firstly, the candidate must possess power within the top 5% of their domain’s inhabitants in terms of strength. Secondly, the candidate's world must be at least Rank III, and the candidate must hold a position of significant importance within it. Thirdly, the candidate or their world must possess 'fortune'—wealth—ranking within the top 10% of their domain."
"Should these three criteria be adequately met, and the candidate secure a majority vote from the seating members of the Venerable council, they shall be officially appointed as the Overlord of their Domain."
’Here it comes.’
Jason leaned forward expectantly as the council members adopted serious expressions. This was the moment he had been anticipating. He had consulted the system beforehand, learning of these specific criteria for Overlord ascension, and knew they would be the ultimate deciding factors among the leading candidates. Regarding the first criterion, strength, Jason felt confident.
"Well, concerning strength, I believe the most suitable candidate among us is quite evident. Diane has repeatedly proven her might on the battlefield; her power is beyond question," Baron Skarr declared, casually waving a hand. Hesabeth, upon hearing this, merely scoffed.
"You wish to challenge Diane’s might against the Undying King? While I acknowledge your preferred candidate is indeed potent, there's no disputing that. However, I can guarantee she wouldn't survive an attempt on her life by me. Jason Marc not only withstood an assault from the world itself, but he also endured poisoning from Queen Gillian’s venom and a prior clash with the former Overlord. If there's anyone in this assembly who can legitimately claim to be the strongest in the Sixth Domain, it is he."
Hesabeth’s pronouncements resonated deeply among the council members, causing them to turn their gazes toward Jason with renewed interest following her declaration! Though Hesabeth was the least formidable of their council, her formidable ability to wreak havoc with her Bias was undeniable. The mere fact that Jason had survived an attack from the world itself undeniably placed him above Diane in their estimation!
DOON!
A formidable power suddenly descended upon the Hall, and everyone stiffened as they felt an immense energy radiating from Diane in palpable waves! The council members shifted their attention to Diane, observing her fiery glare directed at Hesabeth, her anger evident. Diane's voice dropped to a low growl, betraying her intense displeasure at that moment.
"Are you suggesting that simply because Jason Marc managed to evade danger for a short while, he is remotely comparable to my strength? How utterly absurd. While I recognize your position on this council, certain insults are beyond my tolerance, even from someone of your standing!"
Diane’s power intensified, and the sheer pressure caused some council members to break into a sweat! There was no question that Diane possessed one of the greatest powers present, and she was clearly poised to demonstrate her prowess to all! Rising from her seat, Diane turned her gaze to Jason, pointing an accusing finger at him while speaking through tightly clenched teeth.
"I officially challenge you to a duel. If the council members are too obtuse to perceive the truth before them, then it falls upon me to reveal it through combat. Let us fight and settle definitively who holds superiority between us. Or perhaps you are too frightened that I will expose your true nature? Should you refuse, it will become unmistakably clear to everyone here that you are nothing but a charlatan!"
Diane’s hand tightened around her sword's hilt with such ferocity that veins visibly bulged on her hands, and she fixed Jason with an intense stare, awaiting his response! In reality, the desire to prove her strength was not the sole motivation behind Diane’s challenge to Jason!
Diane simply yearned to utterly defeat Jason, bringing him to the brink of oblivion!
