Jason and Valeria travel through Hyperspace towards a massive, rotating structure called The Pit. This 'tower' is built from discarded ships, houses, and even entire worlds, all circling a sun that powers it. They plan to find a Hyperdrive ship there to aid their travels, but must steal one to avoid risk.

TWOOT! TWOOT!

The loud sound of the train docking at a station echoed, and Jason saw that they were floating towards a platform on one side of the Pit. The train slowed down as it approached, before it glided forward and hovered close to the platform. The doors then opened, and a gust of very cold wind flowed into the cabin.

"Come on."

Valeria called out as she began heading out with many other passengers, and Jason put his hands in his coat pocket before he followed her out of the train, with Stella following behind him.

...

[The Pit]

[The Mercenary Bar]

On the eastern part of the Pit, there was a small bar known as the Mercenary Bar. This bar was a popular hangout that hosted most of the mercenaries in the Zeroth domain and served as a meeting spot for the dangerous criminals! As one of the most dangerous places in the Pit, it was practically suicide for anyone to go to the Mercenary Bar unless they were either a member of a popular mercenary group or they went there with another mercenary! The moment someone who isn’t a mercenary is seen at the bar, they would immediately be targeted by the other mercenaries, and they would either be robbed clean or killed on the spot!

But although most people thought this Mercenary Bar was just a simple hangout spot, the truth was that it was one of the most common mission hubs for powerful mercenaries! Since Mercenaries were always looking for a job, there needed to be a place where they could go to find out if there was anyone in the Primordial Expanse that needed their expertise, and the Mercenary Bar was that place.

Whether it was an assassination mission, recruitment for a war, search and destroy, or search and rescue, it didn’t matter. The Mercenary Bar was responsible for accepting and pricing all of the missions mercenaries could go on and ensuring that the jobs were given to the right people.

Jason sat at one of the tables at the edge of the bar, and he did his best not to react to the number of people that were looking in his direction. When Jason had come in here with Stella and Valeria, there had been a wave of curiosity that passed over the entire room. It was the same as those old western movies that Jason used to watch with his father, where a cowboy would enter a bar, and everyone would suddenly go silent. Jason could almost feel the hostility from those mercenaries pouring in his direction, and the only reason why none of them dared to attack Jason was because of Valeria.

Valeria had greeted one or two people as she passed the tables, and all the hostility from the other mercenaries seemed to immediately dissolve into nothingness. It was as if the people in here were only able to get comfortable once they knew that there was a known mercenary in the group!

The Mercenary Bar was very quiet and dim, almost like the people inside were afraid to put too much light on their faces. Each table was occupied by a mercenary group, and there were some tables with only one person there to show that they were a lone freelance mercenary. There were a few servers moving around, and Jason noticed that some of the servers would have a piece of paper folded under their tray, and the servers would hand those papers to certain tables as they passed by.

’Those must be the missions and pay.’

Valeria had led them towards a table at the edge of the bar, and Jason was keeping an eye on the mercenaries around them with his subordinates while listening to Valeria speak.

"Everyone here is a mercenary, and at least half of them have a Hyperdrive Ship. We need to find someone with a powerful ship that won’t break down while we’re travelling, but we’ll also need to take care of them so they don’t try to chase after us when we take the ship."

Jason didn’t need to be a genius to know what Valeria meant by ’take care of’ them. These men and women were all dangerous bastards, and if you tried to steal from them, there was no way they would let you escape. The mercenaries would chase you down to the end of the world, so you needed to kill them to make sure there were no surprises in the future. Jason didn’t have any problem killing anyone that he stole from because Jason knew that everyone in this bar made their entire livelihood from death and murder. Why would Jason feel bad about killing a killer?

Jason nodded and said he understood, and Valeria was about to talk again, but they were suddenly interrupted by a female server who walked up to the table. The woman was thin and tall with a single eye on her forehead and two antennae on her head. The server placed a piece of paper in front of Valeria and spoke in a low voice.

"You have been issued a mission, if you would like to accept."

The statement was straight to the point, and Valeria gained a complicated look on her face as she looked down at the paper. Valeria had already gotten used to getting multiple missions since her popularity had been on the rise recently, but Valeria had promised herself that she wouldn’t go on any mission until she found Gregory. Valeria looked up, and she saw Jason waiting for her patiently. Even though Valeria couldn’t see Jason’s face, Valeria knew what Jason must be thinking. Valeria might be Jason’s sister, but at the end of the day, she was no different from the other mercenaries in this bar.

"I’d like to decline."

Valeria pushed the paper back to the server without opening it, and the server placed her hand on the paper without taking it back, and the server spoke.

"I believe you would at least prefer to see the contents of the letter. I do not have the details, but this mission was personally curated with your interest in mind."

Valeria’s eyes narrowed slightly, and she wondered what this was all about. Usually, when a mercenary rejects a mission, the mission is immediately taken to someone else without question. But the fact that they were so adamant meant that there had to be something else going on.

’Wait... could this be about Gregory?’

Valeria immediately looked at the paper again with more interest! Valeria had spoken to the head of the Mercenary Bar a few months ago, and Valeria told the head of the bar to send any mission that could involve Gregory to her. If the bar was so insistent about Valeria taking this mission, then there was a high chance that it had something to do with Gregory! Valeria took the paper and opened it, and her eyes widened when she read what was in there.

The server at the side waited patiently for Valeria to finish, and after she was done, the server stepped back and gestured towards the front of the bar.

"If you would like to accept the mission, please follow me."

The server wasted no time as she began to walk, and Valeria turned to Jason and Stella and told them.

"I’m going to accept this mission."

Jason’s eyes narrowed.

"What? Did you forget what we came here for?"

Valeria shook her head.

"No, I didn’t. But I need to accept this mission. I need you to trust me."
