"Haha, what luck! Even such troublesome beasts can yield a blood core, truly impressive!"
Suddenly, a shrill laugh echoed from nearby.
Everyone was startled and turned towards the sound.
From the shadows of the ruins, more than a dozen burly raiders emerged one after another.
They wore tattered leather pants, rusty iron chains wrapped around them, exaggerated Mohawks on their heads, and their exposed skin was covered with twisted totems.
"Who are you?"
Kael had just asked, and his heart sank.
These people were completely different from the sickly residents within Iron City.
They were raiders wandering in the wasteland, exposed to radiation for years, their bodies deformed, muscles knotted, even growing tumors.
In the wasteland, they are called "Ghouls," living by plundering, and when extremely hungry, they even eat each other.
The leader had tumors covering half his face, holding a blood-stained chain-saw sword.
Kael recognized him, his face changed sharply, gritting his teeth as he yelled:
"Blood Tooth Gal!"
Upon hearing this name, the Hunter Squad immediately huddled back to back, gripping their weapons tightly.
Gal grinned with his deformed mouth and spat a yellow phlegm:
"Ah, you know my name, you’re pretty knowledgeable. You get the rules, right? Toss over the blood core, and if I’m in a good mood, I’ll leave your bodies intact."
Pike and Roken’s faces were full of resentment, but they understood the difference in strength between the two sides.
The other party had fifteen people, while their side had just fought hard and their stamina was depleted.
If a fight really breaks out, they are clearly at a disadvantage and would suffer greatly.
Kael’s face twitched slightly, and he turned to look at Ira for her opinion.
Ira took a deep breath, her chest heaving, suppressing her reluctance.
People die for wealth, birds die for food.
She understood that circumstances were stronger than people, and fighting desperately would only lead to their complete defeat and death.
After hesitating for a moment, she nodded towards Kael.
Kael took the blood core from Roken and shouted loudly:
"We can give you the stuff, but you must let us go, otherwise, even if we die, we’ll take a few with us. Do you really think our Qiming Hunter Squad is a bunch of lambs to be slaughtered?"
Gal grinned in response, readily agreeing:
"Wasteland rules, buy your life with goods, toss it over."
Kael suppressed his discontent, raised his hand, and threw the blood core over.
Gal caught it with a single hand, stuffing it into his chest.
"Go."
Kael raised his hand, turned to call his team members.
"Wait."
Gal suddenly shouted to stop them again.
"Are you going back on your word?"
Kael abruptly stopped, turning back to glare angrily, his shotgun-wielding arm muscles tensed instantly.
Gal grinned, his chain-saw sword scraping along the ground, creating an ear-piercing friction sound.
"I promised to let you go, but didn’t promise on behalf of my brothers. Wouldn’t you say so?"
"That’s right, boss!"
The surrounding raiders laughed loudly, continuing to advance with their weapons.
Kael was burning with anger, raising his shotgun:
"Gal, don’t push your luck! Our squad ranks in Iron City’s top hundred, if it comes to it, you won’t have a good time either!"
Roken immediately cocked his gun, and Pike tightened his grip on his dagger.
Wasteland law dictates that weakness invites harsher bullying.
Faced with this danger, they could only prepare for a desperate fight.
Just as the tension reached a boiling point, a gentle voice rang out:
"Captain Kael, don’t act rashly, perhaps you should hear my suggestion."
Everyone was stunned and turned to look at Norton who spoke.
Norton smiled faintly, tidying the collar of his protective suit, leisurely walking to Gal’s side, standing shoulder to shoulder:
"I will make a decision for Gal. If you are willing to honestly answer the upcoming questions, I guarantee you will be able to safely return to Iron City."
Kael’s eyes widened in rage, shouting sternly:
"Norton, what do you mean by this?!"
Roken frowned deeply, staring at Norton and the raiders showing no intention to stop, suddenly realizing:
"You’re in league with the Ghouls! All those missing Hunter Squads in Iron City were your doing!"
Norton displayed no remorse, instead raising his eyebrows, feeling quite proud.
The bandits under Gal also did not deny, grinning as they watched the prey struggle.
Pike spat on the ground: "Pah! I knew you were a scoundrel!"
Ira forced herself to remain calm, her gaze cold:
"What kind of issue is so significant that Norton went through such trouble to set up an ambush for just a small Hunter Squad?"
Norton restrained his smile, his narrow eyes fixed on Ira:
"Ira, where exactly did you get that Third-stage Blood Core in your hand?"
As soon as he spoke, the faces of Kael and Roken changed drastically, instinctively glancing at Ira with a look of shock.
Around them, the eyes of the raiders sparkled with greed, like a pack of wolves smelling blood.
Gal pointed at them with his Chain-saw Sword, threatening:
"You better think it through before you speak, don’t use that hunting nonsense to trick us."
"The kind of monster that can breed a Third-stage Blood Core makes even my brothers here detour; how could a team of losers like yours possibly get it alive?"
Norton stepped forward, hands behind his back, added:
"Ira, that thing is something you have no right to possess. Surrender the Third-stage Blood Core and the secret, and I guarantee your survival."
With those words, his gaze swept over Ira as if appraising a rare and soon-to-be-captured treasure.
To be honest, Norton had always been interested in Ira, a woman with standout looks and not lacking in strength, often using work engagements to chat her up.
Half a month ago, he accidentally noticed Ira’s prowess advancing by leaps and bounds.
Secretly spying, he discovered she possessed the invaluable Third-stage Blood Core.
He concluded that this squad could not have hunted a High-level Mutant Beast on their own strength.
Either they found some treasure from the old times, or they mastered certain hunting Secret Techniques, perhaps even linked with mysterious forces rumored to roam the wasteland.
He suppressed his greed, didn’t spill the secret, but instead continued to feign kindness, offering various help to draw closer in relationship.
Until today, he led them into this abandoned block for a big catch.
Kael, enraged, laughed coldly and raised his gun aiming at Norton:
"In your dreams!"
Ira straightened her back, her tone icy:
"The Blood Core is not on me. As for its origin, even if I die, I will absolutely not tell you."
Norton shook his head, feigning a regretful look:
"Ira, don’t be foolish. Just revealing the secret won’t cost you a hair, why go against your own life?"
He turned to Pike, coaxing:
"Little Pike, do you really want to see Sister Ira and Uncle Kael turned into minced meat over a secret?"
Pike, full of loathing, swore aloud:
"You despicable liar!"
Roken’s lips moved, but he finally gave up on explaining.
The thing was a gift from a man akin to a God, its origins were mysterious as it stood.
Even if told honestly, these bandits wouldn’t believe them; they would only think they are lying.
"Refuse a toast and drink sorrow."
Gal licked his cracked lips, a vicious gleam in his eyes;
"Let’s capture them and bring them back to the hideout first. I have ways to pry their mouths open."
"Hmph, let’s see how tough they really are! Act now!"
With Gal’s command, a dozen raiders charged forward with a roar.
"To hell with you!"
Kael cursed angrily, pulled the trigger, blasting the foremost thugs with steel balls.
Roken kept firing, retreating as he shielded Ira, shouting:
"Ira, run!"
Pike’s figure twisted, vanishing into the air, a voice tinged with sobs echoed in the ruins:
"Sister Ira, run quickly, let’s hurry back and get reinforcements!"
Ira watched the enemies swarm in like hyenas, deeply anxious.
She knew their side was absolutely no match, and fleeing was not an option either.
But she couldn’t bear to watch Kael and Roken get dismembered alive by these ogres.
Suddenly, a fierce flicker illuminated her eyes.
In her consciousness, that golden blazing sun surfaced once more.
A surge of violent, scorching energy, through some ethereal connection, poured into her mind and body like erupting magma.
This power was exceedingly domineering, filling her telekinesis, even altering her disposition.
It crushed the previous weakness, reforging an aura of lofty majesty.
Seeing Kael and Roken resisting stubbornly, adding to their injuries, Ira’s eyes shimmered with a faint golden glow, she stepped forward fiercely, shouting:
"Stop!"
