Previously on Starting as the President of a Billionaire Group...
"How can this be you?" Political Commissioner Zhao stared at the young man before him, utter surprise etched on his face.
Noticing the commissioner’s reaction, Yang Wei realized the two individuals were acquainted. He still inquired, "Commissioner, do you know each other?"
Commissioner Zhao paid him no mind and instead shot him a stern look, inwardly cursing Yang Wei for getting him into trouble.
Ye Chen remained silent, his expression unreadable.
Being adept at discerning expressions, Political Commissioner Zhao understood Ye Chen was displeased.
He turned to Zhou Susu, saying, "Captain Zhou, Mr. Ye is here, and you didn’t even inform us. This is quite a dereliction of proper etiquette."
Zhou Susu retorted without hesitation, "Commissioner, you didn’t give me an opportunity to speak either. You’ve been talking incessantly. Where would I find the space to say anything? Furthermore, it seems you’re quite eager to catch my mistakes."
Zhou Susu’s words caused Political Commissioner Zhao’s complexion to fluctuate between red and white.
He quickly offered an explanation, "It's all Yang Wei’s fault. He spreads rumors without verifying the facts."
He then glared at Yang Wei, reprimanding him, "As a member of the police force, instead of focusing on cracking cases diligently, you’re here causing a disturbance and gossiping like a child. If I don't discipline you, this behavior will persist."
Yang Wei was taken aback by these words, having never anticipated Political Commissioner Zhao would say such things.
"Commissioner, didn't you seem quite pleased when I brought up the matter earlier? You even said it was good that we caught Zhou Susu’s error. Why are you denying it now?" Yang Wei challenged abruptly.
"Yang Wei, cease your baseless accusations. When did I ever utter such words?" Political Commissioner Zhao asked irritably.
His voice grew increasingly heated.
Political Commissioner Zhao had not expected the typically compliant Yang Wei to display such boldness today, daring to contradict him.
He hesitated to confront Zhou Susu directly regarding her disrespect, particularly with Ye Chen’s presence as her supporter.
Yet, Yang Wei was a different matter; if even a regular officer dared to retort, how could he maintain his standing as commissioner?
The situation would undoubtedly prove quite humiliating for him if it became widely known.
"Commissioner, how could someone as esteemed as yourself change their tune and deny their own words?" Yang Wei pressed on.
"Yang Wei, as a policeman, mind your tongue," Political Commissioner Zhao warned, his face darkening.
At this juncture, Yang Wei finally felt a sense of apprehension and ceased speaking.
Ye Chen had observed the intense exchange between Political Commissioner Zhao and Yang Wei without interjecting.
"Mr. Ye, I apologize for exposing you to this spectacle," Political Commissioner Zhao said with a smile, his demeanor calming slightly.
"Commissioner Zhao, you are too gracious. Of course, it's no trouble," Ye Chen replied with a smile. "If my presence is causing inconvenience for Susu, that would indeed be undesirable."
"Mr. Ye, how could it possibly be? Your presence is most welcome. If it were someone else, there might indeed be complications," Political Commissioner Zhao responded jovially.
Hearing this, Ye Chen simply waved a hand and stated, "I believe it is inappropriate."
He spoke these words as he began walking towards the exit.
Political Commissioner Zhao appeared somewhat taken aback.
He approached Ye Chen and inquired, "Mr. Ye, where are you headed?"
"I am, naturally, departing," Ye Chen replied calmly.
"Mr. Ye, why would you say such a thing?" Political Commissioner Zhao asked, a look of confusion on his face.
He had just assured Ye Chen that his presence was not an issue. So why the sudden decision to leave?
Ye Chen explained with a smile, "I believe it is best for me to depart, to prevent any potential leaks of case-related information."
"Mr. Ye, I was merely jesting earlier. How could you possibly leak information? You have, after all, assisted the precinct in resolving numerous cases and have earned the commendation of the Director," Political Commissioner Zhao insisted.
Regardless of the circumstances, he desperately wished for Ye Chen to remain, given Ye Chen's favorable standing with Director Zhou.
If Ye Chen were to leave now, and Director Zhou were to find out, he would undoubtedly face severe reprimand.
Moreover, Director Zhou was expected to return shortly.
"You may consider it a jest, but I have taken it seriously," Ye Chen stated firmly.
At that precise moment, Director Zhou entered from outside.
"Younger Brother Ye, my apologies. I had to step out briefly to attend to a matter, and I regret making you wait," Director Zhou said with a smile as he addressed Ye Chen.
Witnessing Director Zhou's return, Political Commissioner Zhao thought to himself, "Indeed, the thing you dread the most has come to pass."
Before Ye Chen could respond, Political Commissioner Zhao interjected with a smile, "Director Zhou, why have you returned so early?"
Director Zhou had, in fact, informed Political Commissioner Zhao earlier that he would not be back until the afternoon. However, his return had occurred much sooner than anticipated.
"Everything went quite smoothly, so I returned earlier," Director Zhou stated with a pleasant smile.
He then turned his gaze to Political Commissioner Zhao, inquiring, "Commissioner, you are here as well?"
"Indeed, I hurried over as soon as I heard Mr. Ye was present," Political Commissioner Zhao responded promptly.
"Excellent, excellent! We absolutely must treat Mr. Ye with the utmost respect. He has been instrumental in resolving numerous cases for our precinct. I even specifically requested Captain Zhou to invite him regarding the recent murder investigation," Director Zhou remarked with evident satisfaction.
Upon hearing this, Political Commissioner Zhao's heart plummeted.
So, Director Zhou himself had summoned Ye Chen. It was no wonder Zhou Susu had been acting so self-assured.
If Director Zhou were to discover the events that had just transpired, he would undoubtedly be enraged.
Yang Wei, witnessing this exchange, was utterly astonished.
He had never anticipated Ye Chen to be so highly regarded and esteemed by Director Zhou.
Reflecting on his own foolish behavior, Yang Wei was filled with regret. Driven by jealousy, he had actually spread rumors that Ye Chen was Zhou Susu's boyfriend.
Yang Wei knew he would face severe repercussions if Director Zhou learned of this, and a shiver of fear began to course through him.
"Director Zhou, please continue your discussion. I shall take my leave now," Ye Chen said with a smile.
"Younger Brother Ye, why are you departing just as I've arrived? Do you have some pressing engagement?" Director Zhou inquired, looking directly at Ye Chen.
His intention was to consult with Ye Chen about the case, and he hadn't expected him to be in such a hurry to depart.
"There isn't any urgent matter, per se. It's more that the precinct doesn't seem overly welcoming to me, considering I'm not an officer. There's a risk of case details being compromised," Ye Chen stated nonchalantly.
Director Zhou instantly grasped the underlying implication in Ye Chen's words, understanding it likely pertained to Political Commissioner Zhao.
"Mr. Ye, whatever makes you say such a thing? Even if you aren't an officer, your capabilities far surpass those of any officer in our precinct. You are most welcome here, and we are well acquainted enough with you to prevent any such issues," Political Commissioner Zhao said with haste.
"Oh? Is that so, Commissioner? That certainly wasn't what you conveyed moments ago," Ye Chen replied, his gaze fixed on Political Commissioner Zhao.
At this precise moment, Political Commissioner Zhao was utterly petrified, beads of sweat now glistening on his forehead.
