While Necrogod was on the sidelines, deep in thought about his next move, a gaggle of young girls approached him. Despite their lack of striking beauty, their demeanor radiated an air of superiority, as if they considered themselves far above him.
"Freak," one of them declared icily, her gaze dripping with disdain as she looked down on him. "Ruby is looking for you. She's waiting in the lounge on the second floor."
Necrogod let out an audible sigh of exhaustion.
'Great. Just what I needed, some teenage drama.'
He had far more pressing matters to occupy his mind, particularly finding Damon amidst this swirling vortex of memories; every second counted. The last thing he desired was to be ensnared in some trivial social squabble.
He turned, preparing to walk away.
Before he could take even a single step, a scoff erupted from one of the girls behind him.
"What's with the attitude, freak?" she snapped, her lip curling with disgust. "You better show some respect."
"The whole academy knows about the disgusting things you're involved in. Ruby is the only one who still bothers to treat you like a person, and you dare to turn your back when she summons you?"
Necrogod halted. The girls behind him seemed to preen, believing their words had finally put him in his place. "See?" one of them muttered smugly. "The freak knows when to listen."
He then glanced over his shoulder. The girls flinched subtly, not quite grasping why. Something about that look sent shivers down their spines.
After a moment of observation, Necrogod let out a soft sigh. "...Children," he murmured. This was not his reality; it was merely a sliver of a memory. The individuals here were not genuine adversaries or allies, but rather spectral echoes from someone else's past.
Still, if this Ruby character held significance, then the memory likely centered around her. This, in turn, suggested she might serve as a guide to Damon.
Necrogod rubbed his temples, then waved a dismissive hand. "Fine. Absolutely fine. I'm going."
The girls exchanged looks of surprise. "Hmph. You should have just said so from the start," one of them huffed. "Follow us." They turned and began their procession toward the academy building.
Necrogod trailed behind them at a leisurely pace, his gaze subtly surveying the environment.
Students meandered through the courtyard in small clusters. Some wielded training weapons, while others clutched spellbooks, hurrying to their various classes. The academy itself was a colossal structure, fashioned from dark stone that lent the entire edifice a formidable aura.
The girls guided him through the grand main entrance of the academy and up a broad staircase. "Second floor," one of them stated without looking back.
The corridor on the upper level was noticeably more subdued, with most students already attending their lessons. At the corridor's furthest end, a door stood slightly ajar. "That's the staff lounge," another girl announced coldly. "Ruby is waiting inside." The group promptly turned and departed, clearly eager to conclude their interaction with him.
Necrogod lingered for a moment, gazing at the door, before he pushed it open.
Within the lounge, a lone girl stood by the window. Sunlight poured through the glass behind her, illuminating the long strands of black hair cascading down her back. She was attired in an academy uniform that appeared considerably more opulent than the standard issue.
She turned slowly to face him, her sharp silver eyes meeting his.
And in that instant, Necrogod’s brow furrowed. "Huh..." Even within this fragmented memory, the girl's presence felt anything but ordinary.
For a handful of seconds, silence persisted between them. The girl's silver gaze slowly traversed him from head to toe, a silent appraisal. Unlike the other students, there was no trace of disgust in her eyes. Unexpectedly, she surged forward and embraced him. "You absolute idiot. Couldn't you have been more careful?"
Necrogod stood taken aback. He had never experienced such proximity to anyone before. She pulled away from the hug and quickly examined him. "Are you injured anywhere? Did those jerks do anything to you?"
Only after confirming he had sustained no significant injuries did she heave a slight sigh. "You're alright. Thank you, my dear. You're fine. It's okay. You won't have to put up with this kind of nonsense for much longer. I've found someone. There's a renowned healer two towns over, and their master is visiting them. That healer's master knows how to get rid of your unholy core."
Necrogod's expression immediately soured. He had thought this person might at least be an ally, but it seemed even that prospect was a dead end.
The girl, however, continued speaking. "I know. I understand what you're thinking. Why would such a high-ranking master help people like us?"
Necrogod raised an eyebrow.
The girl's face lit up with a triumphant grin. "He will help us, don't you worry! I've got something he desires, so he absolutely must lend us a hand. Come on! I'll lay out the entire plan while we hurry. Let's go! Stop staring at me like a fool." With a giggle, the girl grasped Necrogod's arm, tugging him along as they departed the chamber. Their route shifted to a less-traveled shortcut, minimizing encounters with other academy students. Continuing their trek, they soon arrived at what seemed to be a forest.
"This is it! This is precisely where I spotted the herb," Ruby, the girl, declared, gesturing towards the east. During their journey, she had detailed the complete strategy. Apparently, a renowned master healer was in urgent need of a rare herb, and she had chanced upon its location within this very forest.
Their immediate objective was to procure this herb and subsequently negotiate with the esteemed healer. While Necrogod recognized the unlikelihood of this plan's success, his curiosity was piqued, driving him to see where this path would lead. This was the solitary clue he possessed thus far. Damon hadn't contacted him, and his attempts to reach out via their mental link proved futile, seemingly a one-way channel. Therefore, this was the only fragile thread he had to follow. He harbored a distinct premonition that this endeavor would ultimately guide him somewhere significant.
Precisely as these thoughts occupied Necrogod's mind, an approaching presence nearby captured his attention. He instinctively attempted to summon his undead legion, or at least tried to. To his utter shock, nothing occurred. No, in reality, he felt absolutely nothing. He seemed to have lost all connection to his undead companions.
Necrogod swiftly attempted to invoke his other abilities, but they too proved utterly useless. He understood the skills, he was consciously aware of them, yet he found himself completely incapable of activating them. A hurried self-examination revealed the absence of his mana core. The only power he could muster was a minuscule amount of nether energy – an incredibly pathetic quantity, at best. His combat prowess had been reduced to virtually zero. He then tried summoning his storage ring and his legendary staff, but they also failed to materialize. "Shit. This is dire," Necrogod muttered.
As if summoned by his despair, a colossal beast let out a guttural growl and materialized directly before them. "Motherfucker, I am not dying again!" Necrogod instinctively adopted a defensive posture, bracing himself to confront the monstrous beast with his bare hands, when the figure beside him moved with astonishing speed.
The usually cheerful and seemingly dim-witted young girl had already surged forward, engaging the enormous beast in combat.
