Yet Solo stayed put right there.
Out of the blue, he commented, “Is the gadget malfunctioning? Let me check it out.”
He scanned the room and then glanced toward the origin of the noise. A black box caught his eye in that spot. Walking up to it, he lifted the lid and inspected the wiring tucked inside.
While examining it, he noted, “This model is old-fashioned. No one installs them this way in new setups anymore, which means she’s definitely been duped. Allow me to upgrade the system.”
As he talked, he dove into the task.
Brenda parted her lips only to close them again while watching him, unsure whether to speak. Just as she was gearing up to say something, Solo added, “Truth is, you shouldn’t feel that guilty. His death is on me. If anyone’s gotta compensate, it’s me—not you. You don’t need to... spend your whole life making amends.”
Brenda clamped her mouth shut.
Truth be told, she never thought she’d done anything wrong. However, when she became engaged to Solo, Marcus’s mother had confronted her, locking eyes with her intensely, and questioned, “Are you proceeding with the engagement even though my son sacrificed himself for you?”
Those words had stopped her from voicing her thoughts ever since.
Overwhelming guilt and misery consumed her, causing her to abandon all reflection on the issue. She immersed herself in work, letting it dull her pain.
Over the past few years, every mission she took was incredibly perilous, leaving her with severe wounds. At times, she pondered whether returning her life to Marcus would finally bring it all to an end.
Yet that could never happen...
Drawing in a deep breath, she felt Nora suddenly seize her arm.
Nora declared, “Come with me.”
Brenda was caught off guard by her statement.
Solo ignored them completely, focusing instead on repairing the black box.
Together, Brenda and Nora exited the villa.
Justin chose not to tag along this time.
Once Brenda settled into the passenger seat, Nora pulled out her phone and called Morris.
Morris answered promptly.
Speaking in a composed and even tone, he inquired, “What’s up, Nora?”
“May I visit the special department?”
Morris’s voice grew a touch more serious as he replied, “You’re welcome anytime.”
Nora ended the call.
Beside her, Brenda tried to ease the tension with, “Flirting with another guy right in front of me, Nora? Not worried Justin might get jealous?”
Nora offered no response.
Brenda’s playful mood vanished under Nora’s serious expression, leaving her too intimidated to jest further.
They reached the special department in short order.
Nora parked, stepped out alongside Brenda, and walked through the front door.
From his office window, Morris observed their arrival.
His secretary entered and queried, “Time to clock out, Captain Ford. Heading home?”
“No, I’ve got work left.”
Morris answered.
The secretary, taken aback, pressed, “A new case on our hands? Need assistance? We could...”
“Nah, it’s okay. You all head out.”
“... Okay.”
Though puzzled why Morris, typically punctual about leaving, was staying late, the secretary felt immense relief at avoiding overtime herself.
The office emptied as everyone departed.
Brenda, who had briefly served at the special department before, entered with Nora. Familiar with the staff and friendly with them, she exchanged greetings before asking, “So, where to, Nora?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Nora halted before a door, Brenda beside her. Staring at it, she replied, “Right here.”
With that, she swung the door wide.
Brenda froze in shock upon seeing what lay inside the room.
