Brenda hesitated upon seeing Solo but led Nora, Justin, and him into the villa, where a middle-aged lady welcomed them as her mother and offered coffee. Solo's heart sank as Brenda naturally called the lady 'Mom' and a man's voice from the master bedroom responded to being woken as Marcus. When the lady screamed upstairs and collapsed, the group rushed to find the bed empty.

Shocked, Nora stared at Brenda, who shook her head toward her before going on to soothe the middle-aged woman. Brenda suggested, “Mom, why not step outside for now? I’ll rouse him. No need to fret, it’s all under control...”

“Under control?! Clearly, something went wrong! I’m no fool! Spill it—what’s really wrong with Marcus?!”

The woman seized Brenda’s hands firmly, her feelings shifting rapidly. She pressed, “Out with it, did you quarrel? Or are you refusing to bear kids for my son? Is that what caused this? Brenda, how could you deny him children? That’s outrageous!”

Her words barely ended when she launched into slaps and kicks at Brenda!

Brenda clutched her close, unfazed by the strikes landing on her. Nora, unable to tolerate the scene further, struck the woman’s neck with a sharp karate chop, rendering her unconscious. At last, the uproar ceased.

The fierce tussle had left Brenda panting heavily, her outfit and hair utterly disarrayed. Sheaving a deep breath, she murmured, “I’ll take another shower.”

Nora nodded.

After administering sedative medicine to the woman, Nora departed the room.

Downstairs, the three lingered, awaiting Brenda.

From that earlier chaos, Solo had grasped the truth. “So that’s why she showered before? Not because she’s wed!”

As he strode back and forth, he demanded, “But what’s truly happening? Why believe Marcus lives? And who was that male voice speaking inside?”

While the three mulled it over, Brenda descended the stairs.

She rubbed a towel over her wet locks and flopped onto the couch, exhaustion nearly overwhelming her.

No one rushed her to explain.

Once Brenda steadied her breathing, she sighed heavily. “It’s an AI setup.”

“What?”

Solo recoiled in astonishment.

Brenda flung a pair of glasses his way and signaled him to don them. The instant Solo obeyed, a form materialized ahead of him, jolting him into retreating a step.

Marcus’s image in his view jerked rigidly and awkwardly.

The projection greeted, “Hi, friend!”

Marcus’s voice echoed.

Brenda massaged her temples. “Marcus’s mother won’t accept his death. Someone fooled her into implanting a chip in her eyes, letting her view and chat with Marcus. Her mental state is dire, so we can’t reveal he’s gone... Yet the chip falters often, with ‘Marcus’ freezing still. She freaks and summons me. I came moments ago to ease her and reset the system.”

Solo questioned, “So she calls you daughter-in-law because...?”

Brenda sighed in reply, “In her mind, Marcus and I are wed. Thus, she insists on daughter-in-law... She yearns desperately for a grandchild.”

Brenda bowed her head.

Solo, however, comprehended fully. He advanced, clasping Brenda’s hands. “Is this why you’ve pushed me away?”

Brenda nodded.

Solo teetered on the brink of tears. “But it doesn’t faze me! I’ll aid her and stay by your side! I’d even regard her as my own mother!”

Brenda flashed a bitter smile. “Then what? What role would you claim to remain near her?”

Her query silenced Solo.

Brenda dropped her gaze. “I’ve never pondered marriage before, so let’s leave it as is. I’m fine with the current setup.”

She jabbed a finger at the door. “Leave now. Never contact me again.”
