The landlady spoke with a wistful sigh.
"May I ask where she lives?"
"Who might you be?"
"I’m a friend of her daughter."
Su Ming told the landlady.
"Oh, her place is on Xiangxin Street—the house with the small garden bursting with flowers belongs to her."
The landlady gestured toward a direction while telling Su Ming.
"Thank you."
Su Ming departed alongside Zhang Yi.
Thirty minutes passed before Su Ming and the pair reached Xiangxin Street. This neighborhood bordered the Lower District, where homes were largely self-constructed.
"A garden? Boss, is that the one over there?"
Ankaga glanced about, his eyes suddenly lighting up as he inquired.
Su Ming looked over and spotted a two-story dwelling far off, its front garden enclosed by an iron fence and filled with all sorts of blooms.
"That must be it. Let’s take a look."
Su Ming guided the two forward.
Reaching the entrance, Su Ming drew a deep breath before pressing the doorbell on the iron gate.
Ding~
A clear chime echoed repeatedly.
Yet after a prolonged wait, nobody emerged to answer the door.
"Boss, seems like no one’s inside."
Zhang Yi stood on tiptoe, peering through, and remarked.
"We’ll wait right here then."
Su Ming declared gravely.
Just then, a voice rang out from the neighboring doorway.
"Who are you searching for?"
Su Ming turned to find an elderly woman, her face etched with wrinkles, clad in a stained apron, calling out.
"Hello, we’re here for Aunt Qin Qing. Is she away?"
Su Ming inquired courteously.
"And who are you folks?"
The woman eyed Su Ming and his group with suspicion.
"We’re friends of her daughter, here especially to see her."
Su Ming replied swiftly.
"Oh, you should head to the hospital instead—you might still reach her."
The woman revealed this right away.
"What happened?"
Su Ming’s face shifted as he pressed.
"What else? Her husband passed years back, and she lived alone with her daughter. Lately, some soldiers showed up to say her daughter was dead! Overcome with grief, she swallowed pills to end it all. Such a pity—she was kind-hearted, always aiding neighbors! A visitor discovered her and rushed her to the hospital! But what folly; enduring treatment there will likely drain her daughter’s pension."
The woman shook her head as she explained.
These words made Su Ming’s heart plummet, prompting him to ask,
"Auntie, which hospital is she in?"
"First Central Hospital—hurry over,"
the woman sighed while saying.
"Thank you."
Su Ming dashed off urgently with Zhang Yi.
....
First Central Hospital.
Su Ming and the others rushed through the front doors.
Ankaga bolted straight to the lobby service desk, questioning the on-duty nurse.
Su Ming and Zhang Yi waited nearby.
Soon after, Ankaga hurried back to Su Ming and reported,
"Boss, got it—she’s in Room 318 of the 1st Inpatient Building!"
"Move!"
Su Ming set off at once for the 1st Inpatient Building.
Shortly, Su Ming and his companions entered the 1st Inpatient Building, traversing the chilly hallway toward Room 318.
Approaching Room 318, they overheard a female nurse venting frustratedly to a male doctor.
"Doctor Chen, she refuses everything—no meds, no water, no reactions. Why bother saving someone who won’t cooperate?"
"Hey, don’t talk like that! She’s suffered greatly—husband gave his life, now daughter too, leaving her alone."
"I get she’s tragic, but if she wants to die, why squander all these resources?"
"Regardless, we save her; she’s family to a martyr."
Doctor Chen replied, brows furrowed deeply.
Su Ming caught their exchange, his face altering, before approaching politely to ask,
"Excuse me, is the patient inside Mrs. Qin Qing?"
Su Ming questioned.
"Yes, and you are?"
Doctor Chen regarded Su Ming inquisitively.
"I’m a friend of her daughter."
Su Ming stated.
"Perfect, please enter and convince her—the patient’s state is dire."
Doctor Chen urged Su Ming promptly.
"Got it!"
Su Ming shouldered his bag and stepped into the room solo, leaving Zhang Yi and Ankaga outside.
Within the hospital room.
A middle-aged woman with flowing black hair, paper-white complexion, and refined features resembling Lin Chuyu’s lay on the bed, her gaze hollow and lifeless.
Su Ming approached the bedside and spoke gently.
"Auntie, I’m Su Ming, a friend of Chuyu’s."
Qin Qing remained still on the bed, seemingly deaf to Su Ming’s voice, her eyes devoid of spark.
"Auntie..."
Su Ming called out softly again and again.
Regrettably, Qin Qing showed no reaction.
Su Ming let out a soft breath and continued tenderly,
"Auntie, Chuyu always dreamed of locating her father one day and reuniting the family; she kept her word—she truly found him."
At Su Ming’s words, a flicker stirred in Qin Qing’s empty eyes, gradually shifting toward him.
Su Ming promptly unzipped his bag and pulled out Lin Tianhai’s worn military uniform.
"Tian... Hai!"
Qin Qing recognized her husband’s uniform instantly and struggled to rise.
Su Ming hurried to assist, adjusting a pillow behind her for support as she sat upright.
Then, he laid the uniform before her.
