Lin Yi cooks a large pot of porridge for the starving villagers, who have never seen rice before. He provides bowls and chopsticks, and establishes an orderly queue, prioritizing children and the elderly. The villagers eagerly consume the porridge, showing immense gratitude towards Lin Yi.

As for those men, even though the porridge in their bellies wasn’t necessarily enough to really fill them up, at the very least that big bowl of porridge going down made them feel incredibly comfortable.

Especially that feeling when the hot porridge slid into their stomachs—simply too strange and wonderful. It was something they had never felt before. You could say in all the years they’d been alive, this was truly the first time they’d eaten anything like this.

This wasn’t a joke, it was literally the first time. You have to understand, they had never used water to cook food.

The tree sap they usually ate might look similar to the porridge—both thick, white stuff—but the taste was worlds apart. The lingering sweetness and fragrance of this thing in their mouths was downright delightful.

So much so that many of them kept swallowing their saliva, savoring that wonderful feeling from just now. Some had eaten too fast, gobbling it down in just a few bites, and now they were smacking their lips, suddenly realizing they didn’t even know what this stuff actually tasted like.

Seeing this, Lin Yi instantly thought of Pigsy gobbling down Ginseng Fruit in the stories of later generations.

These guys really weren’t much different from him.

And once they had eaten and drunk their fill, their next move really puzzled Lin Yi. He watched them carefully gather up all the bowls from his hands, then all of a sudden they started heading over to the side of their shacks, that is, the side near the grinding hut, and with a series of thumps they just flopped down there, looking for all the world like they were about to take a nap.

This scene left Lin Yi quite baffled. He had no idea what they were trying to do. Were they really planning to take a midday nap?

And sure enough, what followed was exactly what he’d guessed: they weren’t going to do anything productive; they just wanted to rest.

These people had a habit in their daily lives: after eating, they avoided any strenuous movement and always looked for a place to lie down. That way they could save their strength better. After all, food was extremely hard to come by for them, so they would minimize physical activity whenever they could. Even the children, who clearly had the energy to run around, were pulled down by the adults and made to lie there and rest.

If they started running around right after eating, they’d be hungry again very soon, which would waste more food. That was absolutely unacceptable to them. Aside from the men who had to go out and search for food—that kind of activity was unavoidable—everyone else simply didn’t move.

Lin Yi quickly figured out this custom and way of life. At the same time, he beckoned to a guy nearby who looked like the leader. The man saw him and immediately trotted over.

Then he very respectfully performed their own kind of salute to Lin Yi.

Even though it was a salute, the way it looked in Lin Yi’s eyes was extremely comical—the whole motion was just plain funny.

But Lin Yi didn’t show even a hint of a smile, because he knew this was the highest form of respect the man could offer:

"Let me ask you something. Do you know where there’s black liquid?"

The "black liquid" Lin Yi wanted to ask about, obviously, was oil.

Why ask it like that?

Isn’t oil supposed to be underground?

How could they possibly have found it?

Not necessarily. Just like coal mines, oil can sometimes appear right at the surface and seep out naturally.

That was why Lin Yi asked this question—right now wasn’t like later times, after humans had already been extracting oil for nearly a century. At this point, you could say all the oil was still in its original, "wild" state.

When the leader heard Lin Yi’s question, he didn’t even stop to think. He started gesturing and jabbering away to Lin Yi all at once.

Of course, Lin Yi could understand what he was saying.

Thanks to his grasp of the local language, Lin Yi quickly realized the guy was telling him that this kind of black liquid could be found in many places, and that right behind the mound of earth behind them there was such a liquid.

Hearing this, Lin Yi’s eyes lit up. Without another word, he told the man to take him over there to have a look.

The man immediately nodded and then set off in that direction.

They, of course, were barefoot—nothing at all on their feet. You could say they just walked around on bare feet all year long. That was the custom here: regardless of age or gender, whether child or elder, they were all like that, and they basically never wore shoes.

Of course, there wasn’t really any such thing as "winter" here. Even when winter came, the weather was still quite warm.

So they didn’t have to worry about freezing their feet.

Of course, while they wouldn’t get frostbite, getting burned was another story. The summer heat here was brutal, and stepping on sun-baked rock absolutely gave you that "wonderfully" intense sensation.

But clearly, this group had gotten used to going barefoot. The soles of their feet were basically no different from shoe soles by now.
