I analyzed the new Skill Rune I had obtained, marveling at the possibilities of this fresh power while wondering exactly how it worked and what had triggered its birth. It was truly the most fascinating "accident" I had ever experienced.
"I think it also depends on your bond with your familiar!" said Alice. "You and Ignatius have been together since childhood, so you share a very powerful bond. Your desire and emotions toward him materialized into this new Skill Rune."
"Is that so?" I wondered, watching Ignatius chase Aquarina through the forest as they played, leaving destruction in their wake. "Well, anyway, I haven’t checked all the items yet..."
I quickly pulled up the list of items that caught my interest.
[Burning Forest Tree Monster Skill Scroll Fragment (B+ Grade)] x7
[Blazing Infernal Tree Necklace (B+ Grade)] x2
[Ancient Spirit Fortune Coin (S Grade) (Consumable)] x5
[Crystalized Blessing of the Wandering God (S+ Grade) (Consumable)] x6
[Dungeon Core Fragment (SS Grade)] x11
[Cursed Fire Spirit Elixir (S+++ Grade)] x6
"Hmm, these Skill Scroll Fragments—how many do I need to create a complete Skill Scroll?" I wondered.
"You’ve got quite a few," said Alice. "You need five. You also have Skill Scroll Fragments from the Frost Forest Monsters that you collected earlier but never used. And you have two kinds of Divine Spirit Beast Skill Scroll Fragments from the Sea and Forest Beasts, dropped by those you hunted inside Yggdra’s Divine Realm."
"Right, I had completely forgotten about that haul," I said, checking my inventory. "Ah, here it is. It happened before I gained Luck, so the drops weren’t the best, but they were definitely better than the previous items. There were lots of Divine Spirit Beast Heart Crystals, Divine Spirit Beast Blood Elixirs from the Sea and Forest, and the Skill Scrolls. There are also Soul and Spirit Orbs that combined automatically into Divine Spirit Soul Orbs. I have around fifty of them now. And what’s this? Treasure chests? Every Divine Spirit Beast was powerful on its own, comparable to Tier 8 or 9 monsters. They were basically bosses, yet none of them dropped a boss treasure chest?"
"Indeed, Dungeon bosses are naturally more powerful and tied to greater rewards," explained Alice. "The Dungeon drops items as well, but the monster’s individual drops are integrated into the reward system, which improves the final result."
"Oh, so that’s how it works," I nodded. "It’s nice that everything is incorporated. It makes things less confusing. Now, how many treasure chests did I get?"
Treasure chests were never common. I could kill a hundred monsters and only obtain a handful. Their rarity was precisely what made them special. Even after defeating around three hundred Divine Spirit Beasts, I only had...
"Only eleven... Eleven Divine Spirit Beast Treasure Chests," I murmured. "They’re SS Rank too. I might open them now and see what’s inside. But first, let’s use these other items."
"Okay, what does this do?" I wondered, grabbing the necklace. "It’s the only accessory I obtained from the chests this time..."
I put on the Blazing Infernal Tree Necklace and immediately felt a surge of Fire Elemental Spiritual Energy wash over me, merging with my own power.
"Ah, it boosts Fire Elemental Power, huh? Pretty strong, though not as good as the earrings made from Ignatius’s core," I said. "Still, it gives at least a 30% boost to Magic Power and Mana. The special ability is what matters most..."
Feeling the power of spirit flames and the forest itself, I activated the necklace’s ability: "Summon Blazing Infernal Tree Guardian."
From a roaring pillar of flames emerged a giant twenty-meter-tall golem made of hard, burning wood. It possessed two massive arms, burning horns, and a head resembling a helmet.
"Oh, so it can summon a giant golem," I nodded. "How strong is it?"
"Likely comparable to a Tier 7 monster," explained Alice.
"I see, not bad. And I have two of these necklaces," I said, grabbing the second one. "Well, I don’t really need their help right now. I already command an army of Familiars, and some of you can summon your own forces. I’ll keep them for now. Maybe I can gift one to someone who needs a strong guardian."
"You could probably sell it for a good sum," said Beelzebub, buzzing by my side. "Or use it as material for evolution or to upgrade your armor. You haven’t done that in a while—your tiara, your rings, anything."
"I guess I left those behind once Scarlet and Sapphire started boosting my stats so much," I replied. "Then there’s my growth since then, and now Naturia serving as my chest armor. Those upgraded pieces are still technically equipped. Maybe I can do something with them later."
"Hey, how about you evolve me?" Beelzebub asked eagerly. "You’ve got the materials, right?!"
"I do have plenty for you," I nodded. "I’m thinking of using True Demon materials. What do you think? I also still have some remains of Arachne... or is that too painful for you?"
"My apprentice..." Beelzebub fell silent. "So you’ve still got pieces of her. Well... it would be a waste to just leave them unused. As part of taking responsibility, perhaps it’s best if I absorb them into my body. That way, a piece of the girl I couldn’t guide properly can continue living within me."
"Wow..." I fell silent. "I had no idea you could be so sentimental, Beelzie."
"Why are you calling me sentimental? It’s only natural I would feel this way about her..." Beelzebub sighed. "Or... perhaps I truly have changed."
"You really have changed, friend," Furoh said, standing behind him. Beelzebub quickly turned to look at him. "Perhaps it is the environment that shapes people, but when that environment changes, people can change as well. You’ve experienced a good life with Anna, one you never had before. You’ve had days of relaxation and deep thought, you’ve trained and grown stronger, you’ve eaten well and traveled far. That cannot fail to heal the soul, even if only a little."
Beelzebub fell silent upon hearing his friend’s sincere words.
