Unbeknownst to them, the moment they departed Beijing, the news had already been relayed.
What those individuals could never have conceived was their subsequent journey to Sichuan via military aircraft.
Consequently, despite having been in Sichuan for three full days, their whereabouts remained undiscovered by those searching for them.
Xinyan sensed their proximity to the entrance, yet the terrain grew increasingly treacherous. For their own security, they dared not proceed with further haste.
The following dawn, Mr. Gu awakened exceptionally early, surprised by the profound rest he had achieved amidst the wilderness.
He was entirely unaware that to ensure his peaceful slumber, Xinyan had discreetly burned a calming incense she had prepared within her dimensional space after he had settled down.
After consuming a meager meal, the pair resumed their search, following the route indicated on the map. "Grandpa," Xinyan conveyed, "based on the markings, the entrance should be in this vicinity."
Mr. Gu’s heart was heavy with a complex tapestry of emotions. For the sake of these earthly vanities, his eldest son had met his end, and his younger son's fate remained a mystery. His daughter, too, had suffered greatly, separated from her husband, which in turn had subjected his granddaughter to hardship since childhood.
He let out a sigh and instructed, "Yanyan, use the machete to clear away these vines clinging to the rock face."
Xinyan, fully grasping her grandfather's intent, retrieved the machete from her backpack and began to vigorously hack at the area marked on the map.
Initially, upon clearing the vines, only the unremarkable cliff face was revealed. A thorough examination yielded no discernible anomalies.
Xinyan’s arms ached from the repetitive jarring, yet the entrance remained elusive.
Mr. Gu observed his granddaughter with concern. "Yanyan, take a moment to rest and have some water."
Just as Xinyan was about to reply, her gaze caught a subtle alteration in the cliff face's hue on one side. Her previously dispirited mood instantly revitalized. "Grandpa," she exclaimed, "the color of this cliff wall is different!"
With renewed vigor, she intensified her swings with the machete. After clearing an additional three meters or so, a natural opening, approximately two meters in width, was uncovered.
Mr. Gu, prioritizing safety, did not allow Xinyan to enter immediately. Instead, he fashioned rudimentary torches from available materials. Shielding Xinyan behind him, he cautiously ventured inside.
After proceeding about a hundred meters into the passage, they encountered a stone door blocking their path.
Both of them searched the area surrounding the door extensively but found no mechanism to operate it. Xinyan suspected they had overlooked something crucial.
They meticulously re-examined the vicinity, still finding no unusual features. At that moment, Mr. Gu pondered aloud, "Yanyan, could these two stone lions positioned before the door be related to opening it?"
Xinyan crouched down, scrutinizing the pair of small stone lions once more. She attempted to twist them in both directions, but they remained stubbornly immobile. Just as her frustration mounted, and perhaps due to having been crouched for too long, she lost her balance and fell backward.
As her hands still gripped the stone lion, she inadvertently applied pressure, and to her astonishment, the stone lion was lifted by her action.
Before she could fully process the event, the stone door began its slow ascent.
Xinyan stared, incredulity etched on her face. "Grandpa, the mechanism to open this stone door is indeed these little stone lions!"
Their expressions, one aged and one youthful, were equally awestruck.
They had previously spent considerable time manipulating the small stone lions, twisting them in every conceivable direction – left, right, forward, and backward – to no avail. They had never anticipated that the key was to lift them.
Disregarding the pins and needles in her legs, Xinyan moved on her knees to the other stone lion and attempted to lift it directly upward, but it refused to budge. She then turned her attention back to the first lion, studying it intently. A thought struck her, and she tried again. As they watched, the stone door began to descend once more.
Xinyan gazed at the stone lion in her hand. "Grandpa, it appears simple, but it is far from it," she remarked.
It was revealed that one could not simply pull the stone lion upwards. The door could only be opened by inserting one's fingers into the lion's mouth and pressing a concealed catch within.
However, with this particular mechanism, if a person's hand was either too large or too small, they would be unable to reach the precise spot. It seemed that accessing this treasure was, in essence, a matter of destiny.
They reopened the stone door and proceeded inward, torches held aloft. While they possessed flashlights, the torches served a specific, vital purpose.
Upon entering, they found two small stone lions seemingly guarding the space within. To ensure their safety, Xinyan promptly lowered the stone door back into place. Holding their torches aloft, the grandfather and granddaughter advanced further. This time, a distinct breeze could be felt circulating through the cave, suggesting the presence of additional passages.
