Ming Wei finished wiping down the dining table and joined the others for a stroll to help with digestion.
Back in the kitchen, Luo Yanqing and Kang Li were cleaning up when they overheard an argument erupting from the Wen Family Courtyard next door, involving Wen Siyuan and Su Man. Soon, Su Man's distressed cries could be heard.
Kang Li cast a glance at Luo Yanqing and commented, "I don't get why they keep quarreling. If things aren't working out, they should just get a divorce. What's the point of all this fighting?"
Ever since their return to the country, Kang Li had heard disturbances from the Wen Family Courtyard more than three times whenever he was in the compound.
To be more precise, in the less than half a month since Wen Siyuan returned home for his vacation, Su Man had picked a fight with him three times.
From Kang Li's perspective, it was utterly unreasonable.
Luo Yanqing stated impassively, "It's not our concern."
Kang Li responded, "We don't live by the sea, you know."
Hearing this, Luo Yanqing paused for a moment before understanding Kang Li's implication, and he couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle, "Yes, we don't live by the sea, so there's no need for us to get involved."
Kang Li countered, "That's where you're mistaken."
Luo Yanqing: "..."
Kang Li continued, "Even if we lived by the sea, I wouldn't have the time to meddle."
"You are absolutely right."
Luo Yanqing nodded with a smile, then exited the kitchen with Kang Li, directing his attention to Min Rui, "Keep an eye on your younger siblings, finish cleaning, and then all of you should head back to your rooms."
Min Rui acknowledged with a nod.
In the living room.
"Xiao Su and Comrade Wen are arguing again," Cai Xiufen remarked to Kang Li as he and Luo Yanqing entered.
"I suspect she's tired of living like this."
Kang Li settled himself next to Cai Xiufen and said, "No matter how solid a relationship is, it can't endure such constant turmoil."
"She doesn't seem like someone who gets easily confused," Cai Xiufen mused, shaking her head. She then added, "Your second brother called this afternoon; he mentioned he's being transferred to work here in North City next month."
Kang Li's eyes brightened, "Is my second brother getting a promotion?"
Cai Xiufen replied, "You'll need to ask your dad about that."
"Dad, what did my second brother say?" Kang Li turned his gaze to Captain Kang, who glanced sideways at his wife, "You already know."
Cai Xiufen shot him a look, "You old man, I was just hoping you'd converse more with our Li Bao."
"There will always be time for talking," Captain Kang responded ungratefully. His daughter was no longer abroad and wouldn’t be flying overseas unless absolutely necessary, so why should he act so magnanimously?
Observing the playful exchange between Captain Kang and his wife, Kang Li chuckled, "Dad, just tell me. Mom knows I'm returning to school tomorrow morning, so she was giving you an opportunity to display your eloquence."
"What eloquence do I need to display?"
Captain Kang took a puff from his pipe before stating, "Your second brother didn't specify if it was a promotion, but he did confirm he's being transferred here to join the special operations team."
"Considering my second brother's qualifications and the accolades he's earned over the years, I'd estimate there's an eighty percent chance he has been promoted." Being transferred here certainly wasn't a demotion.
Luo Yanqing concurred, "Xiao Li is correct; your second brother has most likely been promoted."
While Kang Li's family remained undisturbed by the commotion next door at the Wen residence, other neighbors were brimming with curiosity. They frequently cast glances toward the gate of the Wen Family Courtyard; some even congregated opposite Teacher Loo's house, feigning casual conversation while actually trying to overhear what was happening with the Wen family.
Unfortunately, the gate of the Wen Family was firmly shut. Apart from hearing Su Man's cries, the onlookers could discern nothing else.
"Let's head home!"
Qin Fang tugged at He Wei's arm as they walked towards their house, "It's still quite chilly lately. You insisted on taking a walk after dinner, and now you want to get involved in their business, don't you?"
"Don't unfairly accuse me."
He Wei murmured softly in his own defense.
"Unfairly? Weren't you the one who steered us towards the Wen family's place when you heard the commotion?" Qin Fang gave He Wei an exasperated look, "I've told you from the beginning of this vacation to stay out of other people's affairs. Do you recall your promise?"
"Fine, I never said I wanted to mediate."
He Wei frowned, feeling a pang of sympathy for Wen Siyuan. He continued walking alone, prompting Qin Fang to glare at him, "Aren't you waiting for me?"
"Let go of my arm."
He Wei stopped and glanced back at his wife, saying this casually.
"Forget it, you go ahead. I know the way home myself," Qin Fang declared, feeling wronged, and decided it was pointless to argue further with her insufferable husband.
He Wei recognized his wife's displeasure and pondered that if he were to proceed home alone, he'd undoubtedly face banishment to the study.
With this thought, He Wei relented, returning to his wife's side and extending his arm. "Hold on," he offered.
Qin Fang inwardly chuckled but maintained a serious expression. "Weren't you walking away with such flair?"
"You can accuse me if you wish, but release my arm. I did not leave you to walk back alone," He Wei stated, guiding Qin Fang's hand to his elbow. "Let's discuss this at home rather than standing out here in the cold."
"It's not that cold," Qin Fang replied.
It was March, and the chill was not severe.
Approximately six to seven minutes later, the couple arrived home, freshened up, and settled into bed. Qin Fang then declared, "Do not urge me to speak with Xiao Su from the Wen family any further. It's evident she will not listen to reason."
"Fear not, I have no such idle time. Had I not felt that Old Wen's life was unbearably stifling, I would not have suggested you engage with his wife and offer assistance.
You understand, our work demands unwavering focus, yet Old Wen's personal entanglements have caused him to disengage from his duties on more than one occasion."
He Wei sighed internally as he continued, "Perhaps Director Luo is extending Old Wen an opportunity, given that a private discussion has yet to occur. However, if Old Wen fails to resolve his domestic issues, and a mishap occurs at work, I suspect Director Luo will promptly remove Old Wen from our team."
Upon hearing this, Qin Fang lightly pinched He Wei's waist. "You and Teacher Wen are both older than Director Luo, yet neither of you matches his capability? He received a promotion within our institute two years ago. Just recently, you mentioned that once the current project concludes, 'Academician' will undoubtedly be Professor Luo's title. It makes me somewhat envious of Comrade Kang."
"Can people truly be compared?" He Wei scoffed.
He Wei snorted. "In the first place, Director Luo received his education abroad. And his intellect—how can we possibly compare? Upon his return, he secured authorization for a special project group, and every initiative he launches proves remarkable, contributing significantly to national development. Over the years, he has guided the team to achieve numerous accomplishments. That is not something we ordinary mortals can rival."
"I believe you are simply resting on your laurels, relying on Professor Luo as his career advances!"
"Is that not a positive outcome? You yourself stated that it is part of my career progression. Given our limited abilities, there is nothing inherently wrong with concentrating on research under Director Luo's guidance."
"What about your ambitions?"
