Feng Lu found herself taken aback, beginning to ask, "So your relationship..." But before she could complete the inquiry about their connection, Feng Lu's mind flashed back to the overheard conversation between Han Bin and Han Qian by the second-floor stairs that very morning. If her memory served her correctly, the bratty Han Qian had mentioned the names Luo Minghan and Luo Mingwei, even noting that Luo Minghan bore a striking resemblance to a young Han Bin. A frown creased Feng Lu's brow for a moment.
Ming Wei looked on, a touch perplexed, inquiring, "What are you fretting about?"
"Mom is just worried that that brat Han Qian will start spewing nonsense at school," Feng Lu explained. She feared that if Han Qian began to gossip, Luo Mingwei and Luo Minghan might become the subject of class chatter, and as Han Qian's stepmother, her own reputation would inevitably be tarnished. While she might not have cared much about her reputation otherwise, the issue here involved school matters. She had, after all, promised Han Bin she would treat Han Qian well and be a good mother, making sure to attend any school events requiring parental presence on time.
The thought left Feng Lu feeling quite burdened. She could already envision the hurtful things Han Qian might say about Ming Wei once the new semester commenced. Perhaps comments like: "Luo Mingwei's mom is shameless, shamelessly living with my dad without any legal recognition." Or perhaps, "Luo Mingwei's mom is a wicked stepmother, always bullying me when my dad isn't home." Some even worse, like, "Luo Mingwei and Luo Minghan were born from their mom's affair with my dad during her marriage."
The more Feng Lu contemplated these possibilities, the more a sense of unease settled within her. She turned to Ming Wei and asked, "Ming Wei, what would you do if that brat Han Qian speaks ill of your mom at school?"
Ming Wei tilted her head. "What bad things would she say?"
Feng Lu's lips parted, but no words followed. She couldn't bring herself to utter the accusations aloud, to label herself a 'trampoliner'.
After a period of quiet contemplation, Feng Lu opened the car door. "You can get out now." She resolved to have a private word with Han Bin later that evening, ensuring he would handle his daughter, Han Qian, himself. After all, as Han Bin himself had stated, it takes two to make a relationship. If she had been in the wrong back then, surely Han Bin couldn't claim complete innocence as the other party involved? The possibility of Han Qian daring to discuss the origins of Luo Mingwei and Luo Minghan at school wouldn't just damage Feng Lu's image as a stepmother.
Having arrived at a decision, a wave of relief washed over Feng Lu, allowing her to exhale. She took Ming Wei's hand after they exited the vehicle and walked into the living room, only to find Han Qian seated on the sofa, her gaze fixed on the entrance.
In the yard, driver Master Wang was already heading out, driving towards Han Bin's company to ensure his boss would have a car at his disposal. Han Qian's voice cut through the air, sharp and accusatory: "Luo Mingwei, I never imagined you’d truly be the daughter of that wicked woman."
Having made her choice, Ming Wei was determined not to be held back. She wanted her mother to witness firsthand just how 'unfortunate' it was to be her daughter! Hearing Ming Wei address her as 'mom', Feng Lu let out a warm chuckle, her eyes softening. With a gentle smile, she said, "Your room is upstairs, directly across from Qianqian's. All the bedding in there is brand new. Regarding your clothes and shoes, I'll call your dad right now and have someone sent to the mall to get them for you."
"Thank you, Mom!" Ming Wei's eyes sparkled, her words dripping with affection.
"Don't be so formal with Mom," Feng Lu responded, her heart swelling with joy. She completely disregarded her stepdaughter, Han Qian, and walked over to the landline. Picking up the receiver, she dialed Han Bin's number.
The call connected moments later. Upon hearing Han Bin's voice, Feng Lu's tone became light and cheerful. She conversed with him for about two to three minutes before blowing him a kiss through the phone, sweetly saying, "Then hurry home after work; my daughter and I will be waiting for you to have dinner together." After Han Bin's affirmative reply, Feng Lu gently placed the receiver back down.
"Your dad said..." she began, about to relay the message to Ming Wei when Han Qian interjected, "He's my dad! My dad's surname is Han, and he doesn't have a daughter named Luo Mingwei!"
Feng Lu attempted to reason with her, "Qianqian, your dad and I are married..."
Han Qian cut her off once more, her voice laced with defiance. "My dad never got a certificate with you! You're just a wicked woman living in my house, not my dad's wife!" With that outburst directed at Feng Lu, Han Qian then turned her angry stare back to Ming Wei. "I know your biological mom definitely told you that you and Luo Minghan were born from her and my dad, but so what? As long as I disagree, you can't take the surname Han, you can't be my dad's children. No matter how much Luo Minghan resembles my dad as a child, my dad won't recognize him, and he won't be good to you!"
Ming Wei's face remained impassive, a stark contrast to Han Qian's flushed anger. "If he doesn't recognize us, that's perfectly fine with me. Do you think I care?" she stated calmly. "I'm at my mom's house now. Whatever my mom says goes, and I listen to my mom."
"Is that so? Are you not concerned that I’ll expose you to your classmates as an illegitimate child? Are you worried I’ll reveal that your mother had an affair with my father while she was married, leading to your and Luo Minghan’s births?"
Witnessing the shift in Ming Wei’s expression at these words, Han Qian couldn’t help but smirk triumphantly. "Are you frightened now?"
Ming Wei, after a brief moment of surprise, responded, "Why should I be scared? Grown-up matters are beyond a child’s comprehension. Besides, if you speak that way, aren’t you afraid your classmates will call Uncle Han a scumbag?"
"My dad is your dad too!"
Han Qian shot her a glare.
Ming Wei simply shrugged. "You’re quite amusing. You seem to think everything you say is right, don’t you?" Han Qian’s face flushed. "Luo Mingwei, you..."
"My stepmother once told me that pointing fingers at others is impolite. If you don’t wish to be considered ill-mannered, refrain from waving your fingers around."
For Ming Wei, handling Han Qian was akin to using a mere four ounces to counteract a force of a thousand pounds.
Feng Lu felt a surge of delight. She observed Ming Wei with a warm smile, immensely pleased to have her daughter by her side. It seemed her good daughter, newly arrived, had already secured a victory for her against her stepdaughter, demonstrating such thoughtfulness!
While Feng Lu was reveling in her daughter’s performance, Kang Li and Min Rui arrived outside the gates of the modest villa.
"Madam, there is a Comrade Kang seeking an audience with you," a servant announced immediately upon entering the living room to speak with Feng Lu.
"Comrade Kang?"
Feng Lu, unfamiliar with Kang Li’s name, naturally failed to connect the mentioned Comrade Kang with her. Consequently, she instructed, "Please show them in."
Heeding the command, Auntie Li acknowledged the request, turned, and exited the living room.
Moments later, Kang Li and Min Rui followed Auntie Li from the exterior into the living room. A wave of displeasure washed over Feng Lu’s face upon recognizing the identities of the individuals Auntie Li had brought into her home.
"What business do you have here?"
She fixed Kang Li with a cold stare, her unfriendliness palpable.
Meanwhile, Ming Wei, upon hearing Auntie Li mention the name “Comrade Kang,” had initially assumed she was referring to her beloved mother. However, she now found herself unable to meet her gaze or even muster the courage to acknowledge her presence.
With her long lashes cast downward, Ming Wei stood beside Feng Lu, suppressing the strong urge to look at Kang Li and Min Rui.
"Hello, Aunt Kang!"
Han Qian glanced at Ming Wei, then let her gaze drift momentarily between Feng Lu and Kang Li. Subsequently, she rose to her feet, adopting an air of exaggerated politeness as she greeted Kang Li.
