Meng Xinian clenched his teeth, reaching out to pull her hand away from him.
"Hmm, your memory is quite sharp. You recalled it the moment I brought it up, didn't you?"
"He was merely a classmate."
"A classmate, you say? Are there any boys at your college right now who harbor good intentions toward you?"
"No," Chiang Xiao replied without hesitation.
Currently, her interactions at school were mostly limited to Jin Lei. Even her seatmate was a man of few words, and the rest of the male students seemed to have no interest in her whatsoever.
Chiang Xiao often suspected this was due to the reputation she earned during her first semester. After she had beaten up a male classmate, most of the boys likely viewed her as too fierce and didn't dare to approach her with a confession.
While there had been two or three who attempted to deliver love letters, she had simply rejected them with a polite smile, not even bothering to glance at the contents.
Cradling her face in his hands, Meng Xinian forced her to meet his gaze. "It is for the best that there are none. If anyone tries, just inform them that you are already engaged to be married. Furthermore, take a look at me—none of those boys could possibly hope to match my good looks."
"You are incredibly vain."
With a light laugh, Meng Xinian pressed a soft kiss to her lips. "Come on, let’s select a date."
He pulled Chiang Xiao close to his side and began flipping through the calendar with an air of seriousness.
"Do you even know how to interpret that?" Chiang Xiao asked skeptically.
"Why wouldn't I? We just need to find a day that is auspicious for everything. Isn't that sufficient?"
"I don't think it's quite that simple, is it?"
"It should be. Or perhaps we just find one specifically suited for marriage?" Meng Xinian suggested as he continued searching. "If anything, we can pick a few options and consult the Elders later. We can ask your father, or perhaps Old Man Yang; he should be knowledgeable about such things."
Meng Xinian felt that they needed to examine the dates whenever they had a spare moment; otherwise, there was no telling how much longer their plans would be delayed.
"You keep looking. I'm going to draw something on your quilt," Chiang Xiao said, unwilling to sit there and act foolish with him.
Did he really think choosing a date was that easy? He could flip through it as much as he liked.
However, Meng Xinian tugged her back, refusing to let her go.
"We pick the date together. Either that, or you bring your quilt over here to draw."
Regardless of what she did, she had to remain by his side.
Chiang Xiao shot him an exasperated look.
"Am I supposed to draw here with my pen? What if someone walks in?"
No sooner had the words left her mouth than a knock sounded on the door. It swung open, and a head poked inside.
It was Dai Gang.
The moment he saw Dai Gang, Meng Xinian’s expression soured.
"What is it?"
Dai Gang felt cursed to have been given this particular assignment, but he had no choice but to deliver the message.
"Great Officer, um... for the next few nights, you're supposed to sleep in my quarters. I'll be bunking with Wu Lingyun. The deputy said it’s getting late, and..."
Chiang Xiao let out a soft giggle.
This was quite amusing.
Was this all just a scheme to ensure she and Meng Xinian didn't spend the night together since they weren't yet wed?
Things were certainly strict these days.
Meng Xinian’s face grew dark with frustration.
"Understood!"
"Great Officer, we should head out now," Dai Gang added, steeling his resolve.
Meng Xinian ground his teeth in annoyance.
Setting aside the perpetual calendar, he snatched up his coat and threw it on. He سپس barked at Dai Gang, "About face!"
As soon as Dai Gang turned around, Meng Xinian leaned down to steal a kiss from Chiang Xiao’s lips. Releasing her, he leaned in and whispered, "Little one, don't go to sleep too early."
Before Chiang Xiao could find her voice, he had already walked out. He paused at the doorway just long enough to tell her, "Don't forget to lock the door."
"Sister-in-law, there's no need to worry. No villain would dare show their face here. You could sleep with the door wide open and be perfectly safe."
"And what if something happens?" Meng Xinian growled, delivering a swift smack to the back of Dai Gang’s head.
