A flicker of emotion crossed Long Xiaocai’s eyes, yet she remained silent.
"I’m leaving now. We should talk again when we have the chance."
Once she had departed, Sister-in-law Chen turned toward Chen Yujun. "Husband, do you suppose she’s on board? Since Wei Yixi’s background seems even better than Great Officer Meng’s, Little Cai ought to agree, shouldn't she?"
The moment the words left her mouth, Chen Yujun erupted in fury. "How dare you even bring that up? Do you realize the magnitude of the mess you’ve made? What was going through your head? Why can't you just stay out of things?"
"I... I only meant well..."
"Meant well, my foot! You’re going to be the ruin of me! Didn't you see what happened? Meng Xi kicked me out without showing an ounce of mercy!" Chen Yujun continued his tirade, "Is there any shred of my dignity left? If Long Xiaocai decides to vent her frustration on us and starts spreading rumors, do you honestly think my career can advance? Forget a promotion; they might demote me at any moment!"
"Surely not? In that case," Sister-in-law Chen said, gripped by a mixture of shock and terror as she grabbed his arm, "then husband, you must quickly arrange a meeting between Little Cai and Wei Yixi. If they hit it off, Little Cai won't hold a grudge against us."
Chen Yujun violently shoved her hand away. "I only said that to settle Long Xiaocai down! Do you actually think I have that kind of relationship with Wei Yixi? Do you think they’ll just meet because I say so? Wei Yixi isn't someone you can just toy with! And as for Director Wei—if this goes south, Old Wei alone could strip the skin right off my back!"
"Then, what are we supposed to do?" Sister-in-law Chen asked, on the verge of tears.
"What should we do? Who am I supposed to ask if you’re asking me?" Chen Yujun pointed a finger at her, scolding her harshly before adding, "I’m warning you now: stop meddling in my affairs, or I’ll divorce you!"
Hearing the word divorce, Sister-in-law Chen’s strength vanished, and she slumped to the floor.
Chen Yujun slammed the door shut and stormed off in a rage.
After spending about thirty minutes chatting with Old Yang and the others, Chiang Xiao began preparing tea for the group. Naturally, she brewed a healthy medicinal blend.
Not long after drinking the tea, Old Yang felt an overwhelming sense of drowsiness. The two elderly companions leaned on each other as they headed back. Before they left, Chiang Xiao invited them back for dinner the following day, an invitation they accepted with joy.
The second they were gone, Meng Xinian bolted the door and scooped Chiang Xiao up in his arms.
"Finally, they’ve all left!"
Truly, ever since Little arrived, they had barely found a moment of privacy.
Having so many people around was exhausting.
Held high like a small child, Chiang Xiao rested her hands on his shoulders and peered down at him. "Don't you think it's time for you to leave as well?"
She had previously insisted that they could not live together until they were wed, and a place had already been set aside for his stay.
Upon hearing this, Meng Xinian’s expression soured instantly.
This was exactly why, he mused, they should just get married immediately.
He really couldn't stand this any longer.
Setting Chiang Xiao back down, he told her, "It’s still early, there’s no rush. Why don't you go take a bath first and wait for me? I need to go borrow something from someone."
Chiang Xiao looked at him, puzzled. "Borrow what?"
"You’ll find out in a bit. Go on, it’s the perfect time for a bath."
He didn't want to waste the private time they would have later.
"Also, lock the door behind me. Don't let anyone else inside."
In the past, he hadn't bothered much with locking up since there was nothing of value to steal, and people looking for him would often just push the door open and walk right in.
